Summary: Sometimes, on endless stretches of road, he measures the years in lives he’s saved and lives he hasn’t. Layla Rourke is a life he hasn’t saved.

It sinks to the pit of his stomach like a rock or a boulder, takes shape like a sculpture, carved into a likeness that scrapes at his inner walls, leaves him battered and bloody inside a shell of sun-warmed, unbroken skin.
