Hello Everyone,
I'm seeking a responsible housemate for a nice little house on Elliot Street. E-mail me at sscogin@marlboro.edu or drop me a line at 802-377-0604 if you're interested. Rent is somewhat negotiable.

6:19 pm - Anyone still have their Elements handouts?
|

Does anyone have a copy of Laura's handouts for the paragraph essay and the writing analysis assignments (tropes and schemes handout a plus) from Elements of Style? I have the essays I wrote for each, but I'd like to adapt the assignments for a writing class I'm teaching this summer and I can't find my copies of the handouts.
Thanks!
Heart, Stacy

From the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) Port Huron Statement (1962):
we seek the establishment of a democracy of individual participation governed by two central aims: that the individual share in those social decisions determining the quality and direction of his life; that society be organized to encourage independence in men and provide the media for their common participation..."
"Rules are accepted as 'inevitable', bureaucracy as 'just circumstances'..."
"But apathy is not simply an attitude; it is a product of social institutions, and of the structure and organization of higher education itself. The extracurricular life is ordered according to in loco parentis theory, which ratifies the Administration as the moral guardian of the young. The accompanying 'let's pretend' theory of student extracurricular affairs validates student government as a training center for those who want to spend their lives in political pretense, and discourages initiative from more articulate, honest, and sensitive students. The bounds and style of controversy are delimited before controversy begins. The university 'prepares' the student for 'citizenship' through perpetual rehearsals and, usually, through emasculation of what creative spirit there is in the individual.....There is, finally, the cumbersome academic bureaucracy extending throughout the academic as well as extracurricular structures, contributing to the sense of outer complexity and inner powerlessness that transforms so many students from honest searching to ratification of convention and, worse, to a numbness of present and future catastrophes."
"The goals we have set are not realizable next month, or even next election -- but that fact justifies neither giving up altogether nor a determination to work only on immediate, direct, tangible problems. Both responses are a sign of helplessness, fearfulness of visions, refusal to hope, and tend to bring on the very conditions to be avoided. Fearing vision, we justify rhetoric or myopia. Fearing hope, we reinforce despair."

of being able to sleep in this familiar bed, to experience its warmth and security, for the next three months. My plane leaves DFW at 8 PM tomorrow, and I've said my goodbyes. Tomorrow I'll say farewell to Julian, but neither of us will say what we should. We're too afraid. So I'll bid Dallas adieu anew, and hope that Marlboro is where I belong.
God, I'm nervous.

9:26 pm - art fag stuff
|

I'm transferring to Marlboro as a junior in the fall. I know a few people currently attending, but none of them are art students so I have a few questions they can't really answer. Hopefully someone can help. If not, I'll find out some other way.
1. Is the art seminar offered by John Willis and Tim Segar supposed to have finished pieces for Plan or can it include in-progress work and studies specifically related to Plan?
2. What are tutorials like for art students? Do you bring in work for critiques periodically? Do you discuss the work's development without necessarily viewing it? Are you supposed to read and research related art/artists? Or is it pretty much whatever you and the professor agree on?
If you can help, thanks. I appreciate it.
Also, I moved to Vermont from Tennessee (lived in MD, NJ, FL before that) last May, so just talking to some people from this general area would be nice.

I'm Ryan, an incoming freshman, and I will soon be on the hill in September--Schrader, exactly. I just discovered this Livejournal community and am glad to have done so.
I'm just posting to say hi--although if any of you Literature/writing students have any suggestions for courses, or comments about teachers, I would appreciate it greatly. (I do know, for starters, that I will try to take at least one course with John Sheehy--I sat in on one of his classes when I came to visit and was just blown away by his intensity. I look forward to having him as a teacher.)
So, thanks. And I'll see you (the current students, at least (it's so reassuring to see how active the alumni still is)) soon!

12:11 pm - Dean of Students

Oh Marlboro College, you are in for a treat. Your new Dean of Students is totally awesome. And his partner is also such an excellent fellow! I had the distinct pleasure of meeting them both last night and spending a good deal of time with them at a welcoming gathering arranged by the local LGBT organization. It was such a delightful time. I was so happy to find how passionate Ken is, how funny, smart and ready to get into the thick of things he is. His knowledge and experience with student populations, with issues that concern campuses and educators more broadly and his excellent people skills all add up to a great Dean in my opinion. And Pride folks, he has an EXTENSIVE queer film collection of stuff that even I haven't seen that came from the New York Film Festival. Plus, he and his partner share a ton in common with my wife and I, so that is an added bonus since that means we are going to be pals. That doesn't really mean much for Marlboro. That just means my wife and I have two fabulous new friends. But it certainly isn't a bad thing for Marlboro, either ;)

I thought everyone here might be interested in this. I've decided to start a semi-autobiographical webcomic about the crazy fun stuff that happens at our little institution on a hill. "Dead Tree Pride" (hah!) will update weekly. Link: http://www.webcomicsnation.com/dungeonmaestro/deadtreepride/series.php
I'm asking for your help! Until Fall '07 starts up, I need material to use for the summer. Please send me your stories, anecdotes, memorable quotations, etc. from your life at Marlboro, and I'll do my best to use them.
Thanks in advance, and hope you enjoy the comic!

Hey, I was just wondering if anyone had pictures (or descriptions, or whatever) of Half Way 13. It's my room for next semester, which I'm sharing with Damaris. We tried to see it at the end of the year, but when we knocked, no one was there. We're really curious about what it looks like...especially since we've heard that it's really small. How small is it really? We already plan on bunking the beds to make room.
I guess any info at all would be nice, but pictures would help a lot, if anyone has them.
Thanks!
Erica

I have been accepted to Marlboro as a transfer student. What are some general pluses and minuses of the school?
I am deciding between Hampshire and Marlboro.

Dear Marlboro folks,
The creator of that oft-used soap of Marlboro College, Dr. Bronner's, is the subject of a documentary that will be released in June, entitled Dr. Bronner's Magic Soapbox.
I'm hoping we get to see him spouting off some of the stuff that graces his soap bottles.
Amusedly yours, Stacy

10:57 pm - Hello

So, this is somewhat last minute, but I'm still struggling over the college decision...thing. Anyway, I visited the school a little while ago and I enjoyed it, but I'm not sure I can see myself living in the middle of VT with only a few hundred people around. I'm a city boy, Brooklyn born and raised, my high school's graduating class is around twice the size of the school... but I still like the atmosphere and the class I sat in on was really interesting. Have any of you felt the same way, how do you deal?

3:47 pm - Desperate Times Call for desperate Measures...
|

Hey folks,
I'm desperately seeknig a way to get to the State Archives in Montpelier this Friday. It's basically vital for plan, and necessary that I go this Friday. I had a ride with a professor, but that fell through this afternoon, so now I'm looknig. Without this trip, I won't be able to do one of my plan papers, which is also doubling as a final paper for one of my classes. Can anyone give me a lift?
Alternatively, can anyone lend me & my girlfriend (who drives) a car?
Thanks, Ethan
