Photograph: Niklaus Stauss/AP/Keystone

Albert Hofmann, the Swiss chemist who discovered the hallucinogenic drug LSD, has died aged 102.

Hofmann, known as the father of LSD, died yesterday at his home in Burg im Leimental, Basle, Switzerland.

His death was confirmed by Doris Stuker, a municipal clerk in the village where Hofmann lived following his retirement in 1971.

The California-based Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (Maps), which republished Hofman's book on LSD, said on its website that he had died from a heart attack.

Dieter A Hagenbach, a friend of 40 years, last spoke to Hofmann on Saturday. "He was in good spirits and enjoying the springtime," said Hagenbach.

Born on January 11 1906, Hofmann discovered LSD - lysergic acid diethylamide, which later became the favoured drug of the 1960s counterculture - when a tiny quantity leaked on to his hand during a laboratory experiment in 1943.

He noted a "remarkable restlessness, combined with slight dizziness" that made him stop his work. "At home I lay down and sank into a not unpleasant intoxication-like condition, characterised by an extremely stimulated imagination," Hofmann wrote in his book LSD: My Problem Child.

"In a dreamlike state, with eyes closed (I found the daylight too unpleasantly glaring), I perceived an uninterrupted stream of fantastic pictures, extraordinary shapes with intense, kaleidoscopic play of colours. After some two hours this condition faded away."

A few days later, Hofmann intentionally took a dose of LSD and experienced the world's first "bad trip".

"On the way home, my condition began to assume threatening forms. Everything in my field of vision wavered and was distorted as if seen in a curved mirror," he said.

"My surroundings had now transformed themselves in more terrifying ways. A demon had invaded me, had taken possession of my body, mind, and soul. I jumped up and screamed, trying to free myself from him, but then sank down again and lay helpless on the sofa. The substance, with which I had wanted to experiment, had vanquished me."

The former Harvard lecturer Timothy Leary popularised LSD with his "turn on, tune in, drop out" advice in the 1960s. But Hofmann believed the substance was hijacked and abused by the hippy movement, while he maintained that he produced it as a medicine.

Hofmann and his scientific colleagues hoped LSD would make an important contribution to psychiatric research. The drug exaggerated inner problems and conflicts and it was hoped it might be used to treat mental illnesses such as schizophrenia.

For a time, the laboratory where he worked, Sandoz, sold LSD 25 under the name Delysid, encouraging doctors to try it themselves. It was one of the strongest drugs in medicine, with just one gram enough to drug an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 people for 12 hours.

The US government banned LSD in 1966, following stories of heavy users suffering permanent psychological damage, and other countries followed suit.

The president of Maps, Rick Doblin, said he had spoken to Hofmann on the phone recently "and he was happy and fulfilled. He'd seen the renewal of LSD psychotherapy research with his own eyes."

X posted to

thebus

And from that excerpt, we read:

IMM: What's your favorite Dead song?
RC: "New Minglewood Blues." I also love "Jack Straw." My wife and I had our first date at a Dead show in 1987 at the Capital Centre. During the intermission we went back and sat in a room with Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir and Mickey Hart and just shot the s*#%. It was a phenomenal first date, let's put it that way.

hey yall! its the first day of summer- longest day of the year!!
i came back from bonnaroo not too long ago, and it was excellent. phil and friends were truly heart warming, it almost made me cry- the only thing that stopped me was to dance. they opened with Uncle John's Band! with other favorites: fire on the mt., scarlet begonias (fuckin awesome), cumberland blues....uuuh a few others...all along the watchtower, and i think roll away the dew. maybe box of rain, but i forgot now. it was a great festival, worth every penny. but from now on i will come prepared for that scorching tennessee sun. i got a cool shirt, got ripped on off on some hits though. i bought 4 for 40$ so that was a rip off, but it turns out they didnt even work and some guy just sold steal your face blot paper that had nothng on it. and im sorry i have to complain, but thats messed up. Bonnaroo is about a real good time- not making money by ripping off fans of the music! and we got ripped on some hash- but we gotta smoke it during phil with some well-worth it purchased beasters. but all in all the artists put on one hell of a show and phil sure ended it with me in awe. i love you phil lesh!!!

"Reality is a condition caused by the absence of Bonnaroo"

have a great day,
Christina

I love how all of this is coming together. The picture of the maps is the AVERAGE of where we want to/would go. Minus: Anywhere in Cali, Ruby Mountains, anywhere past New Mexico, Salmon River, Mt. Rushmore (because really, who HONESTLY wants to go there for a vacation if you had the choice? Just buy a freaking post card. sheesh.), and all the rest are open for grabs. But basically we'll be going to: Denver (flying out to there from Savannah), Grand Canyon, Zion, Yosesi-somebody, Jackson Hole, and elsewhere. We'll be gone for the minimum of two weeks, max (and more likely) 3 weeks. Just me and Dad. He said next year I can bring somebody along. :D

Well, I just figured I'd post this before I went to bed while it was still fresh on my mind.

Love to everybody!!

We could be seeing The String Cheese Incident and Bob Weir & Ratdog, and have either Keller Williams or Taj Mahal open for them, but that's too late in our time (July 2/3, we'd be long gone from Colorado by then) for us. Either them OR Ween/the Flaming Lips (but they're allll the way on July 29th. :( Oh well.)!!
Okay, I swear I'm done.

Feed back, anyone? Also if you live out there and you wanna meet up, just let me know!! I'd love to meet some of you and what-not. Or, if you've done this sort of trip in the area before: any tips/places to go? We're really really open to lots of things at this point, so DON'T be shy!! :) Any festivals of anysort or anything!!

X-Posted to various communities and partially to MySpace. :) You love me anyway.

I posted a while ago about a song project I have to do; I finally decided on What's Become of the Baby from AOXOMOXOA (although you'd be harder pressed to prove that a song than a poem). I figured out a few of the cultural references, and have a basic idea on the theme of the song (surrealism/fantasy) but am kind of in a rut as to what it's actually about, and what the chorus is supposed to mean. Any help on this would be great. Also, if anyone has the live version of the song, my email is absurdum00@yahoo.com and if anyone could send that to me, that would also be great.
