But I'd like to ask it anyway...
Who is everyone's favorite deceased director?
I'm definitely a Kubrick fan. (I mean, just look at my journal's title.) He's like a part of my family, passed down as the favorite from generation to generation. I apparently carry the Kubrickian torch now. Haha, how exciting.

Hello! I was wondering if somebody has seen examples of film about sex in which only the lovers’ faces are shown. I have heard of such things and I would be interested in knowing your impressions. What effect is achieved? What sort of eroticism, to what extent? If it is not sexually arousing, then what kind of imagination does it activate, how? I would be very grateful for your impressions. The reason why I am asking, by the way, is that I am writing a conference paper on Russian erotic poetry, very minimalist, that leaves a lot to the imagination. I thought this could be a suitable way to describe the effects produced, but it turned out that those are hard to describe. Here's an example of what I mean (in the poetry):
7
She cuddled up [to me] And then instantly So it’s not true All that stuff they say That she just feels sorry
8
"Yes?" "No" "No?" "No!" "No?!" "Yes"
Thank you for the insights!

| Girl, Interrupted |
[05 Dec 2004|05:26pm] |
It's interesting to watch movies again after some time has passed. Last night, I watched Girl, Interrupted. I had rented it about five or four years ago. At that time, Angelina Jolie was being touted as the next big thing. Watching the movie now (after seeing most of her body of work), I see that she's rather limited as an actress, always playing the same type of character, possibly herself. She's fun to watch though, I have to give her that; I want to see Gia again now. But she is not a great actress.
Whoopi once again plays one of her wise woman roles. Clea DuVall seems interesting. I don't remember watching her before (even though I've seen 21 Grams and Girl).
As for Winona Ryder, her movies went downhill after around 1994. (Btw, how many movies has she done where she's a writer or writes in a journal/diary? I don't know, but probably most of them.) Supposedly this movie was suppose to be her "comeback" but she got overshadowed by Jolie. She still hasn't had a comeback unless you count media attention from her "shopping spree." She makes a nice somewhat detached narrator, a part that is usually given to male actors. Hopefully, she'll do something worthwhile again.

Cidade de Deus (2002), City of God, is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time.
I hadn't heard anything about it before seeing it in the new releases section of my local video store. It's rated #23 in the top 250 movies of all time at the Internet Movie Database, so it's not unheard of, and basically a lot of other people like the movie, too.
The movie is the story of youths living in the City of God in Brazil, told from the 1960s through the 1980s. They live in poverty and take different paths to try to escape the lives they've been given. But it's not just the story that's fascinating, but the film itself, from the first few minutes of a high-paced chicken race and throughout, the viewer is hooked.

is a lot like Mission Impossible in that little makes sense, but most will not care for the movie is easy to follow. This film is fast-paced and typical of the genre. While James Bond and other spy and espionage films have not been so good in recent years, this is worth seeing.
3 stars out of 4

| King Arthur (2004) |
[17 Jul 2004|06:36pm] |
|
More tolerable than Troy, a PC look at the King Arthur legend. A bad script, but people don't see movies like this one for the language. The actors fit their parts, the locations were nice, but more could have been done for the mood of the film. Worth a look, but if you are a fan of the original myth, stay away.
