SmarTrip card for sale
I moved away and just found a SmarTrip card with some unknown value on it. Anyone interested should visit the auction on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330210482802

Thanks, y'all!

x-posted to all the DC-area communities I could find, sorry for the duplication

You might be able to call and check the balance of it. According to the website:

If you have questions or problems with, your SmarTrip card, call 888/762-7874 or send us an e-mail using the SmarTrip User comment form.

I thought you could only do that if you registered the card in the first place, but I'll definitely look into that. I'd like to say what the balance is if possible. thanks!

The value of it is $5 plus however much is on the card, definitely *not* $20.

Yeah I noticed that too. Heck, I have two SmarTrip cards - one for loaning out to out-of-town friends or when/if I lose my normal one - and I almost bid on that one (what the hey) until I saw the $20 figure.

that's not what I meant, but a ? for you

I've edited the ad. Clearly I was mistaken about what I paid for it originally - I thought I'd paid $20. Also I didn't mean to give the impression I thought it was worth $20, let alone $20 plus the $? balance. I certainly don't want to scare anyone off, either.

But your comment that you almost bid until you saw $20 puzzles me a bit. No matter what I say in the description, $20 wasn't a bid the starting bid price or even a Buy Now price. It was a bad comment by the seller. I don't eBay much, but why would it matter what I want if the bids are only up to $2? Wouldn't you just bid what you want to pay?

Nah, just - honestly - a "oh, it's being listed as worth a $20 + something value" sets off my "uh..." sensors.

I knew it wasn't an eBay price, but to me, it felt like an over-appraisal on an everyday item. It even says on the WMATA site that SmarTrip costs $30 (online) the first time - $25 in riding value, $5 for the card:
http://www.wmata.com/riding/smartrip.cfm

Personally, I always do mine in increments of $20 - the two cards I had started off at $25 each.

Therefore, if you know what it costs - seeing it listed as a $20+value card (which I see you've changed) just gave me a bit of the intarw3b heebie-jeebies.

thanks for the clarification. I can understand that. Yeah, I did change the ad, because I never meant for people to think I thought I was going to get $20 or more for it. The ones I saw on there sell for around $2.50, unless they have $150+ worth of MetroChex loaded on there, and I can't think why mine would be any different.

They cost $30 now? Crazy. Mine was definitely not that much...

If you buy them online. At the Metro station they cost $5 + however much you want on them.

thanks, I'll fix that

I have to take that sentence out [if I can], because I never meant to say I think it's worth $20. I said that's what I paid for it, but I must be mistaken because someone kindly told me they're only $10. In the end, it's only really worth what someone will pay for it. The ones I've seen that don't have $200 in free gov't MetroChex loaded onto them sell for about $2.50, so it's hardly going to be a big money maker. I have no use for it, though, and maybe someone else does.

They cost $10 but come with $5 on them - so they are worth $5 plus the value left on the card.
