Oratory

  • Jun. 12th, 2008 at 12:36 PM
Dear Friends (or Deer Friends if you so choose)

After 3 years of searching, bartering, stealing, and PIRATING for bits, pieces, parts, scraps, leftovers, left unders, left handers, and shanghai'n the perfect cast and crew, The Hellblinki Sextet is proud to present (or aloud to resent) the latest installment in our non christmas related catalog of Musical Maladeys.

The end result is 23 tracks of a musical story weaving a tangled web of Love, Conflict, Vengeance, Conspiracy, Depravity, Revolution, Innocence ,Experience, and Orange Hamburgers. We have come to know and love this monster as "Oratory".

Now if my silver circumlocutious tongue has not convinced you this is a true masterpiece, then you should take a listen for yourselves. Redirect yourself to our myspace page, where you can hear 4 of the songs that are only a fraction of the total sound scape you can own by purchasing "Oratory" on CD baby or from us live at one of the many fine establishments throughout the good ole' U.S.ofA. that we will be visiting this summer!

Fits of Depression

  • May. 22nd, 2008 at 10:26 AM
Everyone come to the Pussycat Lounge in NYC on Saturday, May 31st!

Lucas Lanthier will be co-hosting (along with Retch Dempsey and Jeremy James Thompson) a Depression-era nightclub night called "Fits of Depression", and it will be thoroughly Crash of '29-ish.

SEE the soup kitchen!
HEAR the '30s jazz!
SMELL the smoke from the flash cameras!
TASTE the acrid flavor of radio waves!
TOUCH the dime in your pocket and be glad you have it... unlike some poor bastards.

Dress code is "Down On Your Luck". Actual New York bums will be on hand to give financial advice on how to live cheap.

P.S. Some additional sloganeering from Jeremy James Thompson:

-It's your favorite Rock-Bottom Dollar Dance Party!
-You can meet people, but you can't make ends meet!
-Where a penny for your thoughts is too much!
-A social club for dime-store dames and chintzy chaps!
-A penny-pinching easy-speaking gathering, for loafers, slackers, layabouts & tramps.
-Today: Pussy Cat Lounge Tomorrow: Alley Cat Lounge
-Come dance "The Dollar Drop" it's the latest thing.

We welcome the Suicidal Sons of Wall Street, the Formerly Middle Class Mother's Assoc., the Veterans of Past Depressions, and all you homeless of the future!

Saludos.
Dearest Fellow Dark Cabaret Lovers,

Please pardon this intrusion into your existence, but your assistance truly would make a difference. I humbly seek to enlist you in voting for my twisted comedy song Vampire Suprise, which is in the running for the Mad Music Demented Top 20 Songs of the Year 2007.

Vamp Surp has been a Sepiachord.com Song of The Day, as well as being voted The Best New Halloween Song of 2007 @ The Mad Music Archives.

Your weekly vote can keep the momentum going and would indeed make a difference in the outcome of this quest for Mad Music Infamy.

All pertinent info needed for your participation is found in my blog here:

http://veroniquec.livejournal.com/

Deepest gratitude for your kind consideration,

~Veronique~
MADstermind behind Vampire Suprise
(This ain't yer Grandpappy's Polka!)
Tom Waits, Frank Zappa, The Tiger Lillies, & Dresden Dolls are among my favorite artists. As far as who I sound like (as if a unique individual was a LEGO!), I have been described thus:

If Jim Morrison and Elvira had a love child with a French accent.

I the chanteuse/performance artiste Veronique CheVALier, AKA The "Weird VAL" of Dark Cabaret. I am a kick ass lyricist, and got some decent pipes on me too. Award-winning producer of a benefit recording and show benefiting Planned Parenthood, entitled Cabaret4Choice.

Produced and hosted a critically-acclaimed Vaudeville show in Hollywood, in 2005-06.

Google me. It is fun and easy to do:

Oh and please listen to my song Vampire Surprise, which just won The Best New Halloween Song of 2007 @ The Mad Music Archive, and was The Number One Most Requested Song this weekend past on The Mad Music Show (I have a full-length recording in the can which I will be releasing early in 2008, from which Vampire Surprise is taken):

We can negotiate the terms. I can also provide you with impeccable professional references, and I'll ask you to do the same.

But besides all that, let's have fun, and make some fan-fucking-tastique musique together! We can't escape Fate. One of you out there reading this is destined to work with me, so we might as well start sooner, rather than later in this partnership. Cast your artistic lot with mine. We'll both be enriched.

Dances of Vice!

  • Aug. 12th, 2007 at 5:30 PM
Cinema Strange frontman, Lucas Lanthier, hereby denies all responsibility for the extinction of the dodo bird.

However, he WAS ship physician on board the vessel that captured the last living dodo bird, and later treated the captain for indigestion when the beast in question was served, undercooked, for dinner that night.

Join Lucas Lanthier this Saturday, August 18th at Dances of Vice in New York City, where he will discourse on the occurrence of stomach disorders in naval authority, and also play a few songs.

It's the debut night of Dances of Vice; an old time cabaret with an eclectic streak a full fathom deep.

A Woman's Weapon

  • Jul. 9th, 2007 at 10:37 PM
I was searching for a community with like-minded music enthusiasts... and here it is. The Jacksonville music scene isn't one to be proud of... and they don't really embrace the strange, experimental, or the straight forward and unusual. My little duo is trying to get a more, shall I say, enthusiastic start. We've been around since 2003, just playing out here and there without ever really making that big of an effort. With a strange increase in interest lately (3 shows in two months, we're students, work, and are lazy - this is a big thing), I've decided to try a tad bit harder...

http://www.myspace.com/awomansweapon

We are A Woman's Weapon! A small electric chord organ is the main instrument, there's mild xylophone usage... and on a few recorded tracks (just for shits and giggles) the organ player also used a bass drum and hi-hat. We have a seven song demo recorded that's for sale at our myspace page, as well as my own Etsy account - taxidermy.etsy.com. We're working on getting a video uploaded and once I have a little extra time (graphic design is a time consuming major) I'll get a website up.

One of our main musical premise involves a mother who sold her legless son to the traveling freak show. Tragic, yet amusing.

Thank you for your interest :) That is... if you're interested.

Dark cabaret nightclub in NYC

  • Jun. 22nd, 2007 at 7:17 PM
This is an invitation to all modern day flappers, dandies, time-travelers, crazies and ne'er-do-wells to join us in dancing to the hottest tunes of the Roaring Twenties and Dirty Thirties at Dances of Vice (after Weimar Berlin's Anita Berber), a new monthly dance/cabaret night held in the spirit of the early century days of forgotten elegance, decadence, creativity, and vice. Although the event will have more of a 1920s and 30s flair to it, enthusiasts of the darker side of the Victorian Era are also welcome.

Requested attire for the evening is vintage, decadent, formal, or avant-garde/theatrical. Come and showcase all your lovely vintage fashions! The debut night is to take place at The Pussycat Lounge in New York City on AUGUST 18th, with many surprises in the works, so please check back on the Dances of Vice Myspace page for program details.

If you're a musician, dancer or performer interested in performing at Dances of Vice, please introduce yourself! Artists and other creative individuals interested in being involved with the project, please read the Dances of Vice blog. We are planning a theatrical vintage fashions feature for one of our nights and may be looking for models, so please also keep a-watch for future model calls.

I hope to see some of you at the debut night on August 18th! Otherwise, Dances of Vice is to take place every third Saturday of the month thereafter.

Frank London

Frank-London-_cover

I'm not sure if others would qualify this as Dark Cabaret music, but it certainly rings true for me. I found this artist's Myspace site (for the Frank London musical "A Night In The Old Marketplace") as a fan of They Might Be Giants, who contributed one of the 21 tracks to this endeavour. I sampled all four songs and am very impressed, and though they all give off a dark cabaret vibe, I'd say Meet Me in the Old Marketplace is most representative of this style.
