You've forgotten haven't you?
That's okay, I'm sure Infinite Crisis erased it from continuity.

UGH.
And, after that, good night to me.

I haven't forgotten. Although, there are times when I go through my older comics and I see one of those with electric Supes and it makes me cringe and realize that yes, they really did that to him.

Was it good? No.
Was it as bad as anything Chuck Austen, Joe Casey or Steven T. Seagle? No.

Pfffft. You wish. Not even the strongest of Superboy punches could erase the crapstain of "Electric Boogaloo" Superman.

I kind of liked it.
The costume sucks ass - and the energy powers were kind of out of nowhere - but I liked the fact that they split Superman in two. I thought that was kooky and weird.
The reason why I like it - is because that sort of shit is what Superman is about. Back in the Golden Age when they only held the most fickle grasp of continuity they'd push him through the grinder on a regular basis - turning him into an ugly alien superman, or a gorilla superman or splitting him into two - and that fun, weird aspect of the book seems to have almost completely disappeared over the years.
This kind of thing could have been done well, if handled correctly. It just wasn't.
Fans get upset when anything different is done with Superman - but they never make it clear quite what they want from the character. That's why DC seem to be writing boring stories about him - or constantly trying to turn him into Spider-Man - weaker powers and bigger problems at home. That's what Superman Red and Blue was all about.
Grant Morrison has shown us in all-star Superman that you can embrace what Superman is - you can even make him stronger than he's ever been - and return all the weird campy crap that were once the comics trademarks - and handle it really well. If he wrote Red and Blue into All-Star, I'm sure he could find a way to make it work well.

It took All-Star Superman for me to really appreciate late golden age Superman. Though I don't want the main title to go back there, I don't think many writers could pull that off without just copying the older issues.

don't try to pretend you didn't all buy it and eat it right the fuck up when it happened, and that you couldn't wait to see what happened next. and now you fall into the ranks of the wannabe "comic book guy" to try to save face with your fellow nerds.
personally, i thought it was an interesting storyline. superman is one of the most static, unchanging superheroes there's ever been, and to make such a risky, drastic, dynamic change to such a well-established character is a bold move, in my opinion. we got to see superman being unsure and relearning a completely different set of powers, finding his limits, and adapting to situations in completely different ways than he'd ever had to before.
i know part of it was publicity to bring dc to the media forefront and present them as modern and exciting, and in that respect it worked on me. i was about 16 at the time, and i started reading comics again with this storyline. it was ultimately what started me actively collecting them.
