They haven't had a lot of quiet time, what with Aquaman showing up, and the general chaos of life. So the quiet time for making out on the roof (http://community.livejournal.com/dc_nextgen/5123.html) is nice.

Beautiful night like tonight, what could possibly go wrong?

The Sword of Atlantis Mar. 28th, 2009 @ 10:46 pm
[info]deep_sea_sword

A violent storm sweeps over the Caribbean Sea. In its wake, a research facility is destroyed, throwing debris out into the ocean. Among the bits of wreckage is a stray body a young man with long blond hair and wearing only a pair of swim trunks. He is unconscious, but unharmed. His body is carried by the ocean currents out of the Caribbean and into the Atlantic. No predators touch him, as if they are warded off by some unseen force.

After several days of floating, he finally stirs. The gills at the back of his neck twitch, he opens his eyes, and he opens his eyes to the strange world before him. It’s quite a shock, and he looks all around, completely unaware of what has happened.

Going For Mongul: Mar. 14th, 2009 @ 07:59 am
[info]runs_deep
With the information their detectives pieced together, the assembled heroes set out for the location where Mongul likely was... or at least had been. Cerdian had cast a spell to allow all of the heroes to breathe underwater for the next 24 hours, complete with immunity to pressure, though Cerdian suspects they won't be heading too deep. The ocean in that area has a network of caves in shallow waters; such a location would make an excellent base for Mongul.

While the others watch, Cerdian moves to a sea turtle swimming lazily nearby, asking about any unusual activity nearby recently, then he turns back to his companions.

"I know where Mongul is. This way."

Five minutes later, they're in front of one of the many caves of the area... but this one has a massive vault-like door built into it.

All alone at last... Mar. 13th, 2009 @ 08:15 pm

He still can't believe it, he actually asked her out.
He also can't believe her dad hasn't shown up to get her. Which is good, because he has no idea what he'd do if he did.
So far, 'dating' has mostly meant getting used to calling her his girlfriend... at least in his own mind, since he really has no one to talk to, and playing chess. Not that its a bad thing at all - taking things nice and slow is pretty much exactly his speed.

Especially because he's worried, not without some reason, that when she tries to kiss him for real, he might get nervous enough to manifest someone who makes the world blow up or something. Or maybe that dumb gangster puppet again... surely even Cait would laugh at that one. Whose power is having a puppet with a tommy gun anyway?

But he did get the courage to ask her up for stargazing where they first met on the rooftop. It seemed a nice, calm, slow thing to do, while still being boyfriend-y... right?

Henry stands with his new Amazon friend in the middle of the field, near his father's crashed jet. The others should be arriving any moment.

Carolyn's debut had been great.  She's saved lives, had small local police forces ask for help, and had the larger forces ask for a file on her ablities and a contact line.

She'd been staying nights a the JSA brownstone, because She kept meeting nice people and talking to them.  She felt guilty about waking up Jay and Joan coming in late.  They'd know she was ok at the brownstone, ad they could get their sleep.  They were old, after all.

Carolyn was looking forward to a proper homecoming, though.  Joan had promised to clip articles, so Carolyn could scrapbook with Grandma Libby, and there would likely be pie. Carolyn could get behind saving the world and getting pie.
» Flight Without a Ring:
Henry zips up the flight suit excitedly. He loves this. This was worth the extra studying and getting the A on his geometry midterm. Taking a flight in a jet like this? That's something special.

He watches as his father slips the ring off his finger, and he takes a moment to gaze longingly at the cosmic artifact. But he's never asked why his dad doesn't fly with the ring. Over all these years, he's managed to figure it out.

"So I get to fly it this time, right?"
» Amazons Attacked!
Bia stared up at the statue of her mother, studying it carefully. From what she'd been told, this was an incredible likeness to the Amazon's first Champion of Grace and Wonder. She wondered if she'd ever have the chance to prove herself to the Amazons the way that her mother had. Her mother who, in death, had somehow still managed to have a child with a god.

Granted, a god who wasn't of Olympian heritage.

Though Bia was painfully aware of the circumstances of her birth, she was also aware of the fact that the Amazons - her sisters - had never let her feel any different from the rest of them. Indeed, if anything, they had accepted her and never let her feel like an outsider. Those were her own personal issues.

She sighed and made her way to the beach. To relax for awhile, to maybe see if any of the Nereids were about, swimming and singing off the shore of the ocean. Something to do before she trained with some of her sisters that afternoon.

As she made her way towards the beach, though, she could hear the sounds of battle. Not of training, not of her sisters playing games or having contests for fun. These were truly the sounds of war.

Bia froze.

War? On Themyscira?

That...was not good.
» Debutante
Carolyn had it all.  She had her shiny new uniform, designed with reference to the past Kid Flash ones, but not so much yellow.  She had proof of parental permission for vigilante activities from her legal guardian (aka mother), in written form.  Her pockets carried letters of introduction from more Flashes then most people could name, which she had been given in return for another 4.0 semester (even in history!  Thanks to Allanah) and her continued tutorage in hero's responsibilities from Jay.

Now, it was time to introduce herself to the world.

She was off.

She stopped a mugging in Central City.  She got the mugger scared and down, then retrieved a police officer from a street corner and put him in charge of the arrest.  She gave him her card, in case he needed her as a witness, and then she moved on.

She evacuated an Apartment building on fire in Keystone City, including one cat, two fish, and a turtle.  The Fire Department was able to limit the damage to one unit burned, 3 with smoke damage.  Carolyn fetched blankets and teddy bears for the evacuees, got her picture taken, and headed off again.

In Opal City, Carolyn stopped to talk to a crying child on a street corner.  Carolyn retrieved a kitten from a tree, and took both the kitten and child back home from the park, and explained the situation to the mother.

In Ivy Town, Carolyn stopped for lunch, and was invited to help with an Intro to Physics lecture on velocity.  She won the tug of war game against the entire class, and then vectored it out on the chalkboard for them.  The college newspaper shot a roll of film of the tug-of-war on the quad lawn.

Carolyn stumbled on a bank robbery in process in Midway City.  She insured that the getaway car did not get away.  She declined an interview with the local TV news, calling her role tangential.

Carolyn then decided to hit Metropolis on the way to go pester Henry in Coast City.  She needed to learn the Metropolis streets if she was going to convincingly fight crime.

18 pieces of paper and a box of crayons: found lying about the house.

Yellow with red is traditional.  That's a lot of yellow, though, especially with my hair... and I've taken the name, which is traditional.  How much tradition does one have to do.  Yellow versions of the Flash...  look wrong.  Damn villians co-opting our symbols.  Red is done by everyone JLA, JSA, and their mother... and my mother.  How about blue...

Thanks, Grandma, but I really think I have enough to practice for a bit without learning pin-tucks, or box-pleats.  I'm sure they're really nessicary to a good petticoat, but I can't sew a straight seam yet.  Can I ask, instead, about princess seams?  I'm worried about fiting tops right...

I'll keep that part about how low to cut v-necks in mind.  Although, if I cut them that low, I suspect Henry will throw things rather then look.

» It's Not What You Think
Cait sat crossed legged on the floor in the middle of the living room. Her eyes were closed and twenty small spheres of water and ice orbited around her. Cait had been so busy with work and hanging out with Tyler she hadn’t had the chance to practice using her powers much.

This exercise wasn’t about finesse or fine control. It was about testing limits and pure power. Mother had started this exercise with her when her powers were first apparent. Back then it had been one sphere of water in an orbit around her head. Now she was up to about twenty when she wasn’t stretching herself. The most ever had been twenty five and each time she did this she tried to add one more.

Even with her eyes closed she could almost see the spheres. The water called to her. She felt every drop that floated in the spheres, in the air of the apartment, in the pipes that ran through the walls and even the water in the bathroom where Ty was currently taking a shower. She could even sense the water inside of Ty’s body. She was calm, focused and centered.

She concentrated and pulled water from the air and made a new sphere. It wobbled a bit, but she eventually got it orbiting in sync with the others. A miniature solar system of water moved around the apartment.

Teddy's got his skateboard on the way back from the movies. That's why he likes Dez so much, he never has to see any kissy-luv-luv movies like the girls at school make him go to. None of the Titans girls would force him to see a romantic comedy.

"Didja see when he dropped that guy off the roof?" He skates in a circle around his movie-companion. "I thought he was gonna break his neck and then SNAP! Caught him right out of mid-air. Of course that explosion at the end was totally unrealistic, my dad says cars don't actually blow up like that. I wouldn't know, except this one time, we saw a car on fire on the interstate, but dad handled it himself..."

He sees a lighted sign ahead and curbs it. "Hey, we should go get snacks and sodas!"
» Time Out
He tries to take a couple hours up here, every so often. Bruce called it centering himself, but he just liked to look at the stars honestly, and get a little quiet time for himself. It is his time to relax, and short of Hal coming up with an emergency, he wouldn't be disturbed. On the opposite side of the moon from the Earth, Clark Kent/Kal El/Superman let the layers melt away to just be Clark, without responsibilities for an hour. He wishes that hay held up in vacuum. If it did, he'd chew a piece while looking at all those stars. The only bad thing about being on the moon was that they didn't twinkle, like back on Earth. He misses his dad, and wishes he could go to him for advice on raising kids. Jon Kent knew how to do it well. He'd fumbled the first two times he'd needed to be one, and hopes he isn't fumbling this time too.
» Flashback: Des's 14 b-day present
Lian curled up on the couch, for once home alone. Which was good, because if her batty cousin was like her usual self, Lian figured she'd be by soon to confront Lian over her special gift. She'd sent Dez a normal gift through the normal means of course, a nice tessen to add to her collection of sharp pointy objects. Lian'd just found out about tessen's a year or so back and loved them. She could take them nearly anywhere and no one would think twice about Lian having a fan in her purse.

Lian stuck her feet further under the footwarmer, and contemplated taking a nap. She'd been out a bit later than was strictly allowed last night. Mom and Dad weren't happy...but they figured her not being allowed to sleep during math was punishment enough.
» Christmas means Christmas break
And Christmas break means no school.

Carolyn, thanks to the thoughtful prodding of the Garricks, was done with all her homework, and had played with all her new toys.  She'd even finished reading three of her new books.  She is quick like that.

And now,  she wanted to hang out with people her own age, not that Jay and Joan weren't great people.  She called the other 2/3rds of the trio.

"Hey, Henry, apparently you're busy.  It's Carolyn, calling to pester you. Call me when you have time, and I'll beat you on your new video games or something.  Hope you're holidays and break are good.   Umm...  Bye."

"Hey, Allanah.  It's Carolyn.  It's break, and by now we're both likely done with our homework.  Want to hang?  Call me."
» New Years,New York
Times Square is quite the spectacle, even without being in the midst of the crowd. Tyler clouds the minds of the people below so no one notices the pair floating above the packed neon circus. They have yellow lounge chairs, complete with drink holders and a yellow cooler. No alcohol, unless she provides, but he's otherwise got them fairly well provisioned.

"Hope this is ok? I thought you might appreciate the view without being half crushed by people."
» The Holiday
Christmas as a celebration has been through many changes throughout history. It has absorbed aspects of other winter celebrations over the years, and many accuse it of now being nothing more than crass commercialism.

There is certainly something to be said for the crassness of the season. But beneath it all?

There remains a spirit of generosity. Of giving.

The holiday remains, at its core, a festival of love for one's fellow people. For friends, family, and even strangers.

The gifts merely represent that deeper meaning.
» Season of Peace and Joy
Cait stuffed her hands in the pocket of her winter jacket as she walked down the street. The winter jacket was unnecessary, but Cait wore it to fit in. She could deal with the cold air of winter having been born in the depths of the ocean, but Dad and Grandfather had taught her the value of blending in with surface dwellers.

She always liked the bright lights on display at this time of the year, but this year they did not bring her the same joy and fascination. She missed Grandfather so much. On Christmas Eve the two of them would walk the streets arm in arm of the small town and look at the lights. Then they would return home and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate. Christmas Day her parents would visit and the four of them would spend the day together. Mom would be all smiles and Dad; well Dad would do what he did best, sit somewhere and brood.

Christmas was a surface thing and had been special. Now without Grandfather it wasn’t the same. She didn’t think she’d even see her parents this year.

Tears formed in her eyes and she quickly wiped them away.
» High above Metropolis

He's always thought that if he could trade his powers in for a normal life with school, his few friends, and his mother, he would in a second. Most of them, he hates. As much as people dream of having the power to move mountains, to read minds, telekinesis - any of the countless things he can do, he hates them. They made him a freak. They've ruined any chance of normalcy he really had, any chance of just fitting in. And now they're making him leave the only home he's ever known. No question he'd get rid of them if he could.

Except maybe flying. On nights like tonight, where he can soar into the lower atmosphere and find peace and quiet, and still see the city below, he isn't so sure he'd trade that in. If he focuses, he can see down to tiny details, watch cars crawl along the darkened streets. He can always find the apartment where he's lived since he could remember. He can see the rich-people's houses, high tech marvels only to be found in the City of Tomorrow - where he's always dreamed of buying a place for his mother when his work with STAR made him wealthy enough. He always used to think that was just a matter of time.

And now - he's not going to finish his PhDs, at least not yet. He submitted the letter earlier today to the school. Unforseen circumstances, family business - when it was really just that he couldn't control his powers well enough to not threaten to destroy everything.

And now he has nowhere to go. He has no idea how one goes about becoming a super hero. He can't exactly tell the JLA or JSA where he comes from. They'd never trust him, and he's not sure they wouldn't just arrest his mother. He can't just start saving the day - that's sure to cause one of his power meltdowns. He has no contacts, no insider information, and he won't use his powers on the level necessary to force his way into anything. Right now, any kind of solution eludes him, and even thinking about it has twice stressed him out enough to cause new manifestations.
Thankfully, one time he just summoned a dummy in mobster's clothing... whose power that was he had no idea, but he felt very sorry for them. The other was worse - he began firing an eye beam out of one eye uncontrollably. Thankfully, he was out of the city, no one saw, and nothing was destroyed - though there's now a hillside with a clean hole in it, and he found that he could just close his eye and it stopped shooting, though he still hasn't been able to stop squinting yet since the manifestation went away.

Right now, though, flying is soothing enough to make it stop, to make all the issues a little further away. It always does, somehow.
