From Katy Otto
A benefit show for an organization The District Alliance for Safe Housing http://www.dashdc.org - this groundbreaking organization is building a 36 unit apartment building as well as numerous housing resources for people fleeing domestic violence. I try to put something together for DVAM every October and I thought it would be great to have an event introducing this work to a lot of people I know. They are operating from a brave, empowering model.
St Stephens Church 7pm $6 all ages Positive Force presents Pygmylush Tideland Drugdealer The Guilt Helsinki Saturday Oct 4. Benefit for DASH corner of 16th and Newton in NW DC - walking distance from the Columbia Heights metro. On average it takes a person 6 times to leave an abusive partner. This isn't because people are not strong or smart. This is often because of a host of reasons - one of them being an inability to find housing away from an abuser. The more tools survivors have for charting their own lives and paths, the better their chances of escaping violence. This is all of our responsibility. This happens in our community. The backdrop of this is laid at parties where people lead a drunk girl down the hall without her consent. Or when someone blames a woman who stays with a partner who hits her. Every time we all sit silent, and don't examine our own role in holding up the structural underpinnings of a world that makes violence easier on some than others, we participate. Federal programming and funding, hotlines, ribbon campaigns - while important in their own right - will never shake the foundation of how violence against survivors is made possible. Projects with the bravery and guts of DASH do. And they deserve our support. If you can't come to the show Saturday, please consider making a donation to DASH in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. If you are free please join us at 7pm - pls forward widely and hope to see you there. let me know if you have questions - and feel free to forward to press/blog folks.

THE CAPITAL OF SOUTH OSSETIA IS WIPED OFF THE POLITICAL MAP
The day of August 8 has put a final and irreversible end to the claims of Georgia for this territory. This obvious fact just has to be recognized officially. Today, Moscow possesses an unquestionable moral right for declaring South Ossetia and Abkhazia as territories of Russia. The will of the peoples, expressed earlier at the public referendums, is to be satisfied, as well as their natural desire to be protected by a strong nation.
Saakashvili spent the whole term of his presidency provoking Russia for physical response – to his verbal humiliating statements, to the capture and interrogation of officers of the Russian peacekeeping contingent by his henchmen, to the selection of an alternative government of South Ossetia etc. Thus, when Georgian aircrafts and artillery were systematically bombing living quarters and hospitals of Tskhinval, the center of the breakaway South Ossetia, and killing injured peacekeepers, he was just doing his job. He was doing what he was instructed to do by his US employers. Tskhinvali, as the center of the unrecognized state of South Ossetia, does not exists any longer. What does exist is the Russian city of Tskhinval.

Hi, this video is directed to an American public and the rest of civilized Western world. I am a Russian citizen, I live in United States for a long time, for over 10 years. I happened to be in Russia now and I caught all this "action" that's taking place in South Ossetia, a region in Georgia. I never posted on youtube, but I couldn't hold myself from doing it now. I had to do this. My message to American public is meant as a wake up call. American and other Western media especially CNN is feeding you complete horse shit! Russia did not invade and did not attack Georgia. It was a response to a horrible war crime committed by Georgian president Mikhail Saakashvili, this irresponsible man who just can't stand Russia, hates us, and will kiss America's and Europe's ass just to get a chance to join NATO and European Union. America has always supported Georgian "democracy" and I suspect actually that it was America who instigated Georgia to commit this crime.... on the first day of Olympics! How ironic is that? But please don't take this allegation too close heartedly, my point is not about whether or not U.S. government had any role in this, my point is to give you truth about what really happened Thursday night
So again, Russia did not invade or attack Georgia, as your media outlets are saying.
A brief geography and history lesson. South Ossetia is a very small region about 40 miles by 40 miles in the northern Georgia. It's population is around 70000 people. It borders with Russia. Today, many of the residents of South Ossetia are Russian citizens holding Russian passports, it's our people. South Ossetia had claimed independence from Georgia in 1992. Obviously it was never recognized by any international organizations. In 2006, they held an election where 99% of the voters supported independence from Georgia, and the turn out rate was 95%, it was monitored by a team of 34 international observers from the West. It still was not recognized by the world. As an analogy I would like to bring Kosovo situation, Serbian region in the south that was illegally snatched from Serbia and made into an independent country. Please look it up on Wikipedia and see how similar this situation is. How ironic is that America never supported Southern Ossetia same way it supported Kosovo. Obviously, it was made to show Russia how unfriendly the rest of the world is towards us.
Thursday night, Georgian military started an attack against South Ossetia. It was yesterday. They shelled the main city of Tshinkvali. They killed over a 1000 people. The excuse was to "restore the constitutional order in the region". BULLSHIT! This attack was an attempt to commit "ethnic cleansing", it was an act of genocide. They shelled civilian houses, schools, hospitals, without any warning. They also captured several villages near Tshinkvali. Reports say that they attempt to kill anyone of the Ossetian nationality. It was a pure act of Genocide. Wake up!
Russia couldn't watch this atrocity happening to its own citizens. We had no choice but to bring in our military into the region and protect our people. Whatever happens next the world needs to know, that the cause of this conflict is Georgia and its president. Before you accept what your media tells you, before you get fired up by McCains irresponsible allegations and comments, try remember all the lies that American media had always fed you, try to read news from other media outlets, not russian, but other parts of the world, other than U.S. or U.K.'s media.
America needs to wake up and stop doing what it's doing. Stop seeing an enemy in Russia. Stop using countries like Georgia, Ukraine, Poland, Latvia, Estonia who are basically acting like prostitutes of U.S. government in their public acts of hatred towards Russia.
And finally need to say, Mr. SSHAshvili that's how we like to call him. S.SH.A stands for U.S.A in Russian. Mr. SSHAshvili will pay for what happened yesterday.

The Gender Public Advocacy Coalition is pleased to announce the release of its 2008 GENIUS Survey in partnership with Ernst & Young. GenderPAC works to ensure that classrooms, communities and workplaces are safe for everyone to learn, grow and succeed. The Gender Equality National Index for Universities & Schools (GENIUS), GenderPAC’s most recent effort to end discrimination and promote awareness, encourages colleges and universities to recognize the benefits of a GenderSAFEtm campus - supportive equitable and protective for all students. Choosing to participate in GENUIS sends a strong public statement that bullying or discriminating based on the race, sex or gender of a student, faculty, or staff member is not tolerated at your institution Fill out the survey at: www.gpac.org/GENIUS2008survey, and make sure that we have data for as many schools as possible. Your voice will help us continue to work towards a safe and welcoming environment for every student. While we greatly appreciate the interest taken in GENIUS by students, staff and faculty at academic institutions outside of the United States, at this time GENIUS is only able to track schools based in the United States.

| Support meaningful health coverage for amputees! |
[02 May 2008|02:26pm] |
Right now, many amputees are being denied access to an artificial limb. They pay their premiums into private insurance companies, but then those same companies refuse to cover the cost of the prosthesis they need to be active and independent. This is just plain wrong!
The Amputee Coalition of America (ACA) is working to address this at the state and federal level. We launched an online petition in support of meaningful coverage for prosthetic care and less than one week later we already have almost 1,500 signatures. Our goal is to get to 5,000 signatures by the end of May. We need your help to get there!
Please, sign the online petition and send the link (www.amputee-coalition.org/advocacy/petition/) to your friends & family!
For more information, visit www.amputee-coalition.org/advocacy/index.html.

| Support Starbucks Union |
[14 Jan 2008|02:47pm] |
|
What: Local Starbucks Workers Union Pickets in Response to Starbucks’ Denial of Holiday Premium on MLK Day Where: 1700 Connecticut Ave NW When: Monday, January 21st, 5pm “By denying the Union’s reasonable request to treat Martin Luther King Day like other federal holidays, Starbucks has once again proven its commitment to diversity rings hollow. While Starbucks claims to 'embrace diversity’, the company will not pay a time and half holiday premium to baristas who work through Dr. King’s Day. A hero to many Starbucks baristas and many Americans, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., stood courageously both for racial equality and for the dignity of labor- a stand for which he paid with his life. The IWW Starbucks Workers Union reaffirms and will continue to work vigorously in support of our call for the world’s largest coffee chain to honor Dr. King’s birthday on January 21st by paying baristas the holiday premium. Join local union members and baristas this MLK Day, 5pm at 1700 Connecticut Ave NW, Dupont Cirle Starbucks while we call on this coffee giant to make good on it's PR facade. The Starbucks Workers Union is an organization of employees at the world's largest coffee chain united for a living wage, secure work hours, and respect and dignity on the job. We've been organizing at Starbucks Coffee Company for the past three years. Starbucks workers have proudly announced membership at over ten locations in four states. We are part of the Industrial Workers of the World, a union for all workers. Working together, we have won improvements in wages and working conditions and remedied individual grievances with management.”

| Non-profits from Woodbridge-Stafford :: Dumfries prefered |
[03 Dec 2007|04:04am] |
I'm failing miserably on Idealist.org but am looking to get back into the non-profit sectors (specifically in) the Prince William County VA through Stafford County VA areas. I'd much prefer dumfries but I'm willing to travel, just not INTO DC (sorry). Any websites or business that might be hiring would be fabulous. I've experience in Human Rights orgs but have no problem broadening my horizons. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

| anti capitalist bike bloc for no war no warming - october 22 |
[03 Oct 2007|02:53pm] |
ANTI-CAPITALIST BIKE BLOC to end war and warming!
WHO: You and your bike! (bring an affinity group if you can!)
WHEN: OCTOBER 22, TIME TBA (around morning rush)
WHERE: meet at DUPONT CIRCLE
WHAT: This ride will target and disrupt important aspects of business and politics as usual in Washington. Bring an affinity group if you can and be ready for a high-energy ride! It will be a few hours long with breaks throughout. Bring water and a helmet! For questions and more info, e-mail: BIKEBRIGADESOCT22@RISEUP.NET
WHY: War and Warming bow to the same master: the almighty dollar. War is good for the economy: military spending, fear based consumption, not to mention all the oil under Iraq. As long as it consolidates power into his hands, Bush has no interest in ending the war in Iraq. Likewise, climate crisis is not just a result of the clumsiness of a few large corporations- it is an oportunity for them.As a once healthy planet is replaced by pollution, we will need to look to the corporations who have colonized the earth we once depended on for our basic needs, further securing their positions of power over us. In the marketplace, bloodshed and environmental destruction are indeed desirable activities. This is insanity. To end war and warming, we must end capitalism.

| More on Burma |
[02 Oct 2007|01:38pm] |
How was the embassy protest?
I've been reading that October 6th is being called Global Day of Action for Burma with demonstrations scheduled in London and other worldwide cities. I haven't seen anything (here, indymedia dc, or anywhere else) scheduled in DC on that day. I realize this is the same day as the POSITIVE YOUTH FEST at the Warehouse, but perhaps it can be coordinated with the Youth Fest Planning. The Warehouse is nicely located between the Info Shop and China Town- we could plan a route that goes right past Voice of America as well. Or is there something already in the works? I realize this is short notice- but I'd really like to do something on that day. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Also- October 4th is Free Burma International Bloggers Day
