MBTA Route
Hi everyone,

I'm moving soon from the middle of Davis Square to nearby Ball Square, and I'm looking for some commuting advice - the MBTA trip planner has let me down on many an occasion so I think it's a better idea to ask the people who actually make the trip!

I'll be leaving from Ball Square (near Willow), and ending up between North Station and Haymarket. These are the options I'm aware of:

1. Walking to Davis and taking the Red Line to the Green Line
2. Taking the bus to Sullivan and taking the Orange Line
3. Taking the bus to Sullivan and then another bus downtown
4. Taking the bus to Lechmere to the Green Line

Any advice from experienced commuters is greatly appreciated - thanks!

MBTA Epic Fail
I poked around a bit on-line this morning and found no mention of this event (unsurprising considering it would be bad press and was a relatively small event) so I have only my story to contribute.
I live in Medford, on the other side of Tufts from Davis, just off Boston Ave, so this event is in reach of the general Davis Square community.
We ordered Redbones last night, and when the delivery driver came to the door, she had a peculiar question for us.
"Does the 94 bus normally come down this street?"
I live on Orchard, which is parallel to Boston Ave, but a one way residential with cars on both sides and barely enough room sometimes for a car to get between them.
The answer was, of course, no. Then she said, "Well, it did just now, and sideswiped some cars."
No kidding. We stepped out onto the porch and, lo and behold, we could see the bus. I am at nearly the end of the street and the bus had made it three quarters of the way down it. I think the only way they were going to get it out was to back it out since the end of the street is a sharp turn and the only side street off is also a 90 degree turn. We would have gone to take pictures but, well, our food had just gotten there and we were hungry. After eating, we were going to head up to take a look when our upstairs neighbor rang the bell and asked if we had heard. She took a few pics but has not posted them. The bus, and police, were there for hours, in the rain. We can not for the life of us figure out what the hell the driver was thinking and I hope the MBTA insurance covers those poor peoples repairs!

Davis Square T Accident?
Tonight at around 9:30pm, it seems that somebody was struck by the T in the Davis Square stop. I was in the station at the time it happened and heard the train's horn blaring, but I did not actually see the incident occur with my own eyes so I can't say for sure exactly what went on. A woman behind me on the escalator saw it and advised me "not too look and scare myself", but she indicated that somebody had been hit.

This is all I know about it so I don't want to go around spreading false assumptions about the incident. It has however, really been weighing on my mind so if anybody has any further facts about what happened I would appreciate being filled in. I'm sure there are other Davis residents who are also concerned.

Thanks.

EDIT: All is well in the world! The person is OK! Thanks for filling me in!

Red Line closed, Kendall-Park St, 6/14-15 and 21-22
The Red Line will not be running this Saturday and Sunday (June 14-15) or next Saturday and Sunday (June 21-22) between Kendall Square and Park Street Station. This is so the T can repair railroad ties on the Longfellow Bridge.

They're going to run shuttle buses, but I have no idea how the buses will get around or through tomorrow's huge Gay Pride parade in downtown Boston. Also, the Cambridge River Festival, tomorrow from noon to 6 pm, will close Memorial Drive.

Tomorrow would be an excellent day to use a bicycle instead of either a car or the T.

Channel 7 news at Davis T

I was walking to the Davis Square T with a friend and was stopped by a reporter from Channel 7. She wanted to show us a clip of a guy exiting the T (running through the exit and on his way) who dropped something which turned out to be a wad of cash. He didn't look down or anything. She asked us if we had ever dropped/lost anything and how did it make us feel? Then she showed us the clip in slo-mo twice and asked us more questions and our names. I would have kept on going but my friend was nice and stopped to talk to her. I guess we'll see if we're on the 11 o'clock news tonight. At least my hair was nice today!

Did anybody else talk to reporters in Davis Square tonight?

Davis Sq T-station artwork lj icons
Since the MBTA changed the photo last year I've always wanted to shoot a composite/panorama of the big artwork display in the Davis Square T station. Not that it ever happened :D

But at least I took some photos of the newly installed artwork yesterday and created lj icons. If anyone wants to grab any of these feel free to do so. Larger versions can be found here.

Guerilla Ad on Redline T subway car

What initially caught my eye on this 'ad' were the numerous typos but I think the concept was cool. The text of the poster encourages riders to initiate conversation with fellow passengers and attempt to connect with other humans rather than sit idly by and stare at ads for the duration of the ride. Personally it's hard for me to take lessons in morality from people who can't distinguish between your and you're but I give them an A for effort. Did anyone else see this, or know anything about the origin?

Police on the T
I walk to work everyday, so I haven't commuted on the train in 3 years now.  But yesterday I had to get to the city so I hopped the train and there were two very buff, swat-team style cops with large guns -- I don't know my guns, but this sure wasn't a handgun, it extended about the length of his torso.  Is this a new thing?  Have there been military style police riding the rails for a while now?  I opted to take the next train but the other passengers seemed less surprised.

homeless man at davis stop

i'm curious if anyone has any idea what the story is with the homeless man who sits on the benches every morning down on the platform of davis.  I'm not looking for snide remarks, its obvious he is homeless, but to be honest, and potentially non-pc, the smell of urine is really potent down there.  I have noticed that he keeps to himself and really doesn't interact with anyone.

I'm not expecting someone, to offer him a place to shower, but how does this get addressed in terms of the MBTA? Is it allowed as long as he gets through the gates?  I don't know much about the social services in Somerville.

Of course, I feel bad for him, and am also curious about how the situation works with him being down there everyday.

This situation seems particularly intense, at least to me.

Sounds of a commute!
I did my usual routine today of traveling from Davis Square to Kendall via good ole red, when I saw something in this morning's Metro that may be of interest to my fellow Davis Square inhabitants. Apparently, a student from Tufts who has taken the train from Davis to Park Street was inspired and made a musical composition based on sounds of the commute (i.e. the noises that the train makes)  lasting 17 minutes - the exact length of the trip. The piece is called "Inbound" and it's part of program tonight called "Longitude" at Pickman Hall at Longy School of Music. It's at 8pm, and it's free! Maybe I'll see some there!

That "Spare Change" guy.....
......has been in rare form recently. Not the one who asks "Pardon me sir, can you spare any change?" in a weird monotone, but the one who "sells" the Spare Change newsletter. I saw him suckering a few college-age looking girls the Saturday before last. By the time I got down to the platform, they were angrily chatting with each other, one of them with a fresh Boston Now! in her hand. This morning, he was doing his usual rounds, with a lit cigarette. Classy. I think it sucks that this guy does his thing, ripping people off every day, and that he hasn't been banned from the Davis Square Red Line, or any of the others.

Help bring the Green Line all the way to West Medford!!
Hi. This concerns Davis Square community because it is very close to the Medford border and this train would run fairly close to Davis (Ball Sq.) and also cater to parts of Somerville way up north of Tufts that go all the way to the Mystic River near Boston Ave.!

Please Support The Green Line to Medford!
Medfordites or Friends of Medfordites! If you are a supporter of the wonderful Green Line trolleys being extended to West Medford (Rt. 16 by UHaul and Whole Foods, most likely), PLEASE speak up and help support public opinion in favor! If you are not in favor or don't know anything about it, please GET IN FAVOR of it! It'll be great and make Medford/West Medford an even better, more vibrant and convenient place to live, work and visit.

Look at the medfordgreenline.org website! Attend the upcoming meetings! Call or write to City Hall and let Mayor McGlynn know you favor it. Tell ALL of your Medford friends and neighbors to support it. There is a small group of vociferous opponents, who mostly oppose the Green Line trains for reasons which I honestly find to be suspect and foten questionable. People have talked about "crime" and "homeless people" coming into medford on the new line. They have talked about "environmental problems", from ELECTRIC trains! They have talked about massive "land takings" (eminent domain) when the actual needs of any land takings have not even been spelled out or delineated yet and everyone in the process (like Green Line propnent Ken Krause who is on the official Medford committee) is being careful to minimize any backyard land takings and make sure individuals are mitigated (recompensated financially or materially) if their land is taken or even if they are nearby abutters (with sound buffers, landscaping, etc.) There have even been oppponents who have spoken of this being part of a plan by Tufts to "take over" this part of Medford and talk of "real estate values going down" when in fact real estate values rise considerably when MBTA trains come in  (look at davis Sq.!) So please help support this valuable public transportation project!

Green Line extension community meetings
The Green Line Extension is currently planning the new route and T stop locations. Locations under consideration are in or around Brickbottom, Union Square, central Somerville (Ball Square, Magoun Square), Tufts, and Mystic Valley Parkway / west Medford. They're holding a series of community meetings starting this week to discuss the possible routes & station locations and find out what people want.

The web site has a flyer [PDF] listing the meetings and summarizing what they're about:

Do you want a T stop on the Tufts campus? It could happen, but it's not certain, so make it more likely by showing up at the meeting and saying so!

Spare Change bait, Boston Now switch
Hi all-- This is less a gripe and more of a "social splinter" I was pricked with the other day. Maybe someone with quicker reflexes will be spared some awkwardness. In Davis Square train station, often there's a guy asking a dollar or more in exchange the Spare Change newspaper. I'm sorry I don't know his name, but he's somewhat tall, and always wears a kind of beret-like hat and big dark sunglasses. His voice has a practiced, smooth cadence to it, which is nothing if not engaging.

The other morning I was in a generous mood and handed over my dollar. What he approached me with was a Spare Change newspaper, but what he slipped me was a Boston Now. I didn't catch on at first. I'm slow enough that I had time to find it surprising that the Spare Change newspaper had gotten fancy headlines and color photography. It was a few seconds later that he was gone and I realized what had happened.

Since by that time I was paying attention, I noticed that he pulled the same bait-and-switch on another commuter, who, it didn't seem to me, had even noticed.

It just left me feeling weird. I don't regret giving him the dollar, but I also know that I'm likely to ignore him for quite a while.

Greenpeace panhandlers on Holland Ave.
Has anyone else been hassled by the panhandlers for Greenpeace on Holland Ave.?

By "hassled" I don't mean "been approached with the 'do you have fifteen minutes for the environment" spiel. I do mean "yelled at for refusing to acknowledge the person in question".

A few days ago, I got out of the Holland St. subway station and took a sharp right out of there. I had my eyes trained on the ground, didn't make eye contact with either Greenpeace rep, and one guy kept asking "do you have a minute, do you have a minute, do you have a minute". I ignored him. He was about 5'10", stocky, brown hair, wore glasses and had a large star tattoo on his neck.

On my way back, he was still there, and he apparently spotted me. I walked around the tree to avoid contact with him, and he said, "I can see you. That tree isn't blocking you. You can still see me. You can still hear me," as well as some other things I can't remember. Because I'm on a fixed income I didn't have any money for him, and I don't know that I would donate to Greenpeace anyway, but I also didn't have the time or the inclination to explain my ambivalence towards Greenpeace. So, instead, I asked who his supervisor is.

He responded (in a "duh" voice) that his supervisor was "uh, me". I informed him in no uncertain terms that because he was so rude to me, I wouldn't give his organization one cent, based on his behavior towards me. If you're representing an organization, you can't go around accosting people in the street like this, especially if no one is happy to see you there in the first place.

Bus stops blocked with snow.
I've just moved to the Davis Square neighborhood this year. I've seen a lot of discussion about the state of the sidewalks, but particularly upsetting to me is that when the city plows the streets, the snow is piled right in front of the bus stops. I'm blind and have balance issues, so climbing over massive snowpiles is difficult, and waiting in the street is plain unsafe (not that these things aren't difficult and unsafe for everyone!). From whenever there's a storm until the point when the snow melts, I'm essentially blocked from safely accessing the bus--which, I don't know, there must be an ADA violation in there somewhere.

I'm trying to figure out whom to talk to about this. I called the Somerville DPW a couple days ago, and they said they would call the MBTA to put in "an urgent request" to clear my stops on both sides of the street, and that I should give them "a couple of hours" to get it done. I kind of laughed at this, knowing that there was no way anything would happen within a couple hours--and indeed, nothing happened at all. Is this actually a city issue or an MBTA issue? The city is the one creating the barrier, but the MBTA, I would assume, is responsible for maintaining its stops and ensuring access to same.

Right now a lot the snow has melted, but I'd like to try to address this somehow before the next major storm. I've thought of calling the DPW again; my alderman; the MBTA general line; the MBTA disability access coordinator (or whatever their title is). I'd really rather not go around in circles, though, so I'm hoping someone here might have some more concrete ideas about where to direct my energy. (I'm also really hoping not to be told there's nothing that can be done; it doesn't seem possible that living here means that I just won't be able to safely use the bus all winter. Because seriously, I would have to move.)

Thanks so much in advance for your help, and happy holidays to those who celebrate.

How to request a bus shelter?
Does anyone know whether there is a process by which one can request a shelter to be erected at a particular bus stop? Is this something one would do through the city, or through the MBTA? I could not find any specific info on this topic at mbta.com.

Possibly this would be a futile exercise, but I'd like to give it a try anyway. In case anyone cares, the bus stop in question is at the corner of Highland Ave and Central Street, on what I guess you'd call the northwest corner, next to the Dunkin' Donuts parking lot. There's no shelter at that bus stop whatsoever, and it is not a fun place to stand when the weather is cold and/or wet. Like, uh, say, this morning when I waited almost half an hour for the 88.

Also, whose bright idea was it to make all the bus-stop benches out of metal, so that anyone dumb enough to sit on such a bench in cold weather will almost literally freeze their butt off? You don't have to answer this one; it's rhetorical. ;)

bus route question
When the 89 bus goes to Clarendon Hill, does it turn around and come back through Davis Sq.? in other words, if I'm in Winter Hill and I get on the 89 that says "Clarendon" rather than "Davis", will it eventually take me to Davis?

Of course on a normal day I could just get off at the rotary and walk down College Ave., but well, have you looked out the window lately?

btw, I did try to look it up on mbta.com but the map is unclear.

T-Radio! WTF
I was just on the MBTA website, and found a quick reference to a pilot program called T-Radio. It sounds for all the world like they're going to be pumping crap music and idiotic personalities into my daily commute. Plus, in the process probably drowning out the T musicians with "Boston-based celebrities and sports figures in 30 and 60-second segments designed for people on the go". I was pissed when I started seeing TV screens in the checkout lanes at Star Market, but now in one of the last audio-garbage free spaces in the city.

http://www.mbta.com/about_the_mbta/news_events/?id=13647

Now I haven't been commuting in the past couple of weeks, so I wasn't in any of the stations for the trial periods. Has anyone heard this yet. Is it really as horrible as I think its going to be. I'm really hoping that I'm reading the press release incorrectly, and this is actually a radio broadcast that I need to actually tune into on a portable radio, but it seems for all the world like its going to be pumped out of speakers.

If you see something, say something.
The T has a feedback form about the program on their website. Take 30 seconds and go express your opinion.

Super 88
This is more of the 'tricks of the T' sort of thing. I want to go to a Super 88, and don't really care which one. But I need to go by public transit. I'll be going from Davis or Porter Square (both easily walkable from my place).

Since none of them are here in Somerville, does anyone know which one is the *easiest* to get to by T? MBTA gives a bunch of solutions, but they all have at least don't really help a lot for actually grading the trip.

(they also want me to take a completely train-based trip to the one in Malden, going all the way Downtown and back out the Orange Line, that takes 82 minutes with 15 minutes of walking, when a well timed use of the 90 to Wellington and the 108 to a block from the Malden location would take about half that time. But I also know that timing would need to be right accurate. I'm not concerned about *when* I do the trip, I have my days to plan for myself.)

So who has really good, clever ways of getting to any Super 88?

So, my visitor parking pass card says on it, "Visitor District B". I assume that indicates some kind of boundary where the permit is allowed to be used -- does anyone know where I can find a map of what that means? I've tried http://www.somervillema.gov/section.cfm?org=traffic&page=138, but either I'm blind or there's no love.

(If there is no map, then does anybody know how far away a visitor is allowed to park? They scrawled my address on the permit, too.)

Question the second: Can anybody point me to an online map that actually shows all the MBTA bus routes? I'd expected to find something like that at mbta.com, but seemingly no love there, either.

Davis Square T Art Project
Hi all,

Just wanted to draw Davis Sq artists' attention to a special collaboration between the T, Tufts University, and the City.  We're promoting a project to bring new community art into the Davis Square T station.  The new art installments will be 4'x4', and will be reflective of the spirit and vibrancy of the City of Somerville, the Tufts community, and the linkages between them.

We're putting out a call to local artists to submit their work for consideration. There is a $100 honorarium for selected pieces.  The deadline for submission is September 14th.

Please click here to read more specifics about the proposal and to download the Call to Artists: http://www.somervillema.gov/spotlight.cfm?id=34 . Flyers and more information will also be available at ArtBeast this weekend.

Thanks!

Lost Immunology Binder on T, Sunday night
Last night I lost a translucent white flexible binder on the shuttle bus that was running between Park St and Kendall on the Red Line. I'm fairly certain it was left on the wheel/luggage hump at the front of the bus, sometime between 5:30-7pm, but neither the Red Line nor the four bus stations they subcontracted out to have the binder. This binder contains all of the information from my BUSM Medical Immunology class, for which the final exam is this Wednesday. In addition, there may be some coupons to REI and Hilton's Tent City floating about in it. Obviously, I care more about retrieving the former than the latter.

If you saw this binder, or have any ideas where I could continue searching for it, I would be extremely grateful. I am so unbelievably royally fucked without it. Thank you.

(P.S. Yes, I know I'm a complete idiot for leaving it on the T, but I was returning from backpacking and could barely see straight. Good thing I didn't bring the endocrinology notes to study on the mountain too, huh?)

She says it happened on February 28, presumably during morning rush hour. She doesn't say it happened in Davis, but she mentions Davis a couple of times, so it seems likely.

(Disclaimer: I don't know her, don't know anything about her, and am assuming that the story is fact rather than imaginative fiction. I found it during a routine Google blog search for "Charlie Card")
