Barbells?
Does anyone know where in the general area I can buy a barbell? A location with parking is preferable. I tried both City Sports in Porter and Modell's in Medford, but neither of them carry barbells, just curl bars.

Health clubs in the area
I just moved to the Davis Square area not too long ago, and I've been looking to join a gym. I checked out Boston Sports Club but their rates are a whole lot more than I want to pay. Can anyone recommend me something in the area that is cheaper, even if it's not as nice? I don't have a car so walking accessibility is a must. Thanks!

BSC Open - unfortunate experience
BCS in Davis is now open. It's a pretty small space and I wonder what it will be like after the new year (resolutions and all) and during peak hours.

I went today at about noon. I worked out for about 10 mins and then needed to use the rest room, when walking past my locker I noticed the lock was missing. My credit card, debit card and diver's license were all gone. Oddly, my watch and the money (about $60) were still there. The staff was sympathetic but not much they can do.

Luckily the debit card was with Wainwright so I just walked on over and they did everything. And I had literally cancelled the credit card right before leaving the house because of another issue. Not looking forward to the trip to the registry.

The staff recommended a key lock as opposed to a combination lock like I had.

All in all, it could have been worse...

BSC Update?
So has anyone managed to actually find out the details of the charter membership rates or any other pertinent info at BSC? Anyone?

--

ETA: The charter membership rate is a one-year commitment at $55/month (with a $59 one-time processing fee). Their default is $70/month with the processing fee as well as a $149 joining fee. There is no set cap on how many charter 'ships they will sell, so it might go on for a while, or might end anytime.

If you join now, your first monthly payment is January 1, and until then, you can use any of their other clubs anytime. They expect the Davis location to be open mid-December.

And as long as I'm posting, I was at The Onion the other day and thought of y'all as I read World Series Flyover Turns Out To Be Full-Scale Airstrike.

(I love knowing that I can always count on [info]davis_square for my noise- and burrito-related news.)

BSC - any insider info on when it opens & $
Would anyone have any insider news @ when BSC is going to open? The site says soon but that can mean "soon..."

Also wondering @ costs - their site says nothing (I hate that - Bally's does the same thing). Tired of Bally's and looking to switch.

Indoor Basketball Courts?
Where do people go to shoot hoops when it's cold and dark?

I'm sure there are local gyms or athletic clubs that offer indoor basketball courts, I'm just having trouble finding them. I'm not really looking to join a pick-up game as much as practice my nascent jump shot...

Oh, and I have wheels, so distance isn't a great problem.

Squash courts in the area?
Hello - just moved back to Davis after a year away and loving it. I used to be an avid squash player and am looking to get back into it. Wondering if there are courts in the area that the public can use for a fee. Also looking for people who're interested in playing once a week or so. Thanks!

Stupid BSC question
I can't find this on their site at all, hence asking here(and yes, it probably IS a stupid question); does anybody know if the Boston Sports Club in Davis is going to have a pool?  I want to join a gym, but I'd love to find one with a pool.

Gym/Health Club: Not ridiculously expensive?
I checked the tags, and didn't see anything related, so here goes:

What's available for gyms and health clubs in the davis/porter area? A coworker is trying to join a gym, but everything seems to be over $40/month. It's been a couple years since I've had a gym membership, but that seems really high to me, and Healthworks is over $80/month (my coworker is female).

Any recommendations? Are our expectations really out of whack?

Gym
I'm thinking of joining Bally's Total Fitness until bike season/BSC opening, but I'd like to know how other people feel about the place. The walkthrough they provide really doesn't tell me much about the people who go there or the demands on the facilities. Tell me what you think, Davisites.

I guess I'm mostly interested in their Spinning/Reaction Cycling classes and weight training, so if you have special examples please bring them forward.

So, rumor has it the Bally's Gym in Porter Square has a POOL!?

Is anyone a member? Have you been swimming? Is the pool totally grody? How is the gym as a whole?

I would really join just to swim but I'd love some opinions.

Also, what's the membership rate?

Thanks,

I'm interested in starting to do some track running. I checked the website for Tufts and couldn't really tell if their outdoor track facility was open to the general public or not. Does anyone know off hand? Or have a suggestion of where to go? I live right in the middle of Ball Square, and obviously since I'm starting an exercise routine, I'm willing to go where ever I need to go.

Also, has anyone been using the public pool at Kennedy? My aunt had told me about it a few months ago, but I never had the opportunity to check it out myself.

Good gym?
My boyfriend are moving near the Tufts campus in Medford--not necessarily close to Davis, but much of what we do is centered in Davis--what's a good gym in the area?

I understand it's more difficult to find a gym that's good for women, and he's more interested in weights anyway and this is mostly for him, but we'd like to find a gym that would appeal to both of us (I'm not even going into what sexist stereotypes that invokes, but work with me).

Gym?
Hey peoples, does anyone know of a decent gym in the Davis Square area (maybe even within walking distance)? I haven't found anything yet in my search online.

Truth in Advertising
I am currently battling with the new gym in town, Work Out World. They are trying to deny that they sent out a card offering a great deal: $15/month. If you have by any chance saved this small blue postcard (sent to all residents, I believe), I would sincerely appreciate the opportunity to make a copy of it.

Thank you!

health club in the area?
Hi everyone,
I'm new to Davis Square and I'm looking for a gym. Any recommendations? I'm looking for someplace with a good variety of classes (including spinning, if I can find it). I know there's a Healthworks in Porter; anyone here a member? Or is there anything right in Davis?

Looking forward to getting to know the neighborhood -- this LJ community seems like a great resource.

Healthworks Fitness Center for Women
Hi neighbours,

Does anybody go to Healthworks Fitness Center for Women which is on Porter sq.?
I want to have workout program designed for me, and I'm thinking of a consultation or personal training... maybe to take few sessions with an instructior. Did you do it? Can you recommend me someone? Whom did you like or dislike and why?

Thanks!

ways to get exercise
hi all - i wanted to get some varied ideas of ways to get regular exercise around here.  i'm trying to avoid joining a gym- i prefer to do activities that are fun and challenging, and as an added benefit, happen to be good for your body.  e.g. climbing, sailing, swimming, hiking, but these are not the most convenient this tiime of year.  i think i need something that forces me to commit, and where i can see progress over time.  so i was thinking of signing up for a phys. ed. type class- maybe at a school, or if there are any continuing education type programs?  anything you know of in davis or nearby?

my other idea was joining a martial arts studio.  any you recommend?

also, suggestions for yoga/meditation studios are welcome too.  :)

Step aerobics classes?
Can anyone recommend a place that does step aerobics classes near Davis? I'd rather pay on a per-class basis than have to pay a regular monthly fee (like at Healthworks).

Gyms and Massage question
1. What gyms are available in the Davis and Porter areas? I am not interested in Healthworks (not a fan of their gender-specific facilities, reverse sexism is sooo fifteen years ago), but I'm otherwise open to any suggestions.

2. I also need somewhere to get a decently priced professional massage in the area. Suggestions?

Thank you!

Climbing Community
I noticed that when someone posted a comment in the Boston community about rock climbing a little while ago, a lot of people responded, so I thought I might post this link so ppl would know, that there's a community for Indoor Rock Climbers in New England. It's for finding climbing buddies, good gym and equipment reviews, and posting pics.
I hope you enjoy!
