Rest and Bread, a service of prayer and communion this evening
Hi All,

You're invited to our mid-week service in our cool basement chapel this evening at First Church Somerville. Rest and Bread begins at 6:15 and ends at 6:45. Music for meditation begins at 6:00.

If you want to, you can hang out afterward to help with the finishing touches to our Pride Hats, amazing constructions of summer hats and flowers. Then, of course you can march with us in the Pride Parade on Saturday.

You can find us at 89 College Ave., on your way home. Come for some peace and balm.

Laura Ruth
Minister of Outreach

Yard waste/hazardous collection schedule is up
I just noticed that Somerville's 2008 Environmental Services Guide - with the yard waste collection calendar, hazardous waste collection dates (for your CFLs!), and information on discounted composters and rain barrels - is now on line:

http://www.somervillema.gov/CoS_Content/documents/EnvironmentalGuide2008.pdf

I think they'll mail a copy, but I always lose that, so I depend on this electronic version through the year.

Somerville Solar Challenge
Do you want to contribute to renewable energy projects and help Somerville win free solar panels for a school?

Join Somerville Climate Action in the New England Wind Fund Solar Challenge at www.NewEnglandWind.Org/Somerville. The deadline is April 30th to be counted in the race to win solar panels!

Here's how it works:

Your Somerville household/business makes a donation ($5 per month or a $100 one-time contribution) to the New England Wind Fund.

1. The donation is fully tax-deductible.
2. The donation is matched twice by the state's Massachusetts Technology Collaborative:
- once back to Somerville to fund renewable energy projects, and
- once to fund clean energy projects that benefit the state's low-income residents (which Somerville may be able to draw upon).
3. AND....as an added incentive: the New England Wind Fund will provide and install at no cost to the city a 2kw solar system on one of our schools - BUT ONLY IF we get enough people to sign up by April 30th: We need 150 new donors to the New England Wind Fund.
4. It's a great educational opportunity for the school.
5. The city saves money on electricity costs, creates fewer greenhouse gases and other air pollutants, and helps New England move toward energy independence.

We can only win with your help! And only if you join SOON.
For more details and contact information, plus to learn which other towns won panels, and to join now!: www.NewEnglandWind.Org/Somerville

Ras na hEireann 5k Foot Race: March 16th in Davis Square
Ras na hEireann is an Irish 5k race and celebration of traditions dating back centuries - and simply a celebration of spring in Somerville. Everyone (not just those of Irish decent!) is invited, all runners and walkers, to celebrate life, the coming of spring, and to enjoy a memorable race and St. Patrick’s Day celebration on March 16th at 11am in Davis Square!

I'm not affiliated with the event (I'm not even Irish!), but I am running and helping spread the word because I think it will be a good time.

The official website with extensive information and registration (limited to 2500 runners and filling fast!) is here.

A FaceBook community that I put up to coordinate with other racers is here.

Middlesex Marquee (again)
I just sent the following to the Middlesex Bank. I also e-mailed Rebekah about it. Does anyone else ever notice this trend on the marquee but me? It's annoying and depressing.

Rabies Vaccination Clinic and Dog Licensing
The City Clerk's Office will be issuing dog licenses at Somerville's Sixth Annual Rabies Vaccination Clinic on Saturday morning, June 3, 2006, from 10:00 to 12:00, at the Animal Control Office in the Public Works complex on Franey Road, across from Trum Field.

The fee is $12.00 for a dog license, or $6.00 if the dog has been spayed or neutered. The cost for the vaccine service is $5.00. No prior record is needed, but vaccines will be for one year only unless a current rabies certificate is supplied. All dogs must be leashed and cats must be in carriers.

Bike riders, be careful out there
this afternoon at around 12:30 pm, I was riding my bike southbound across the temporary Lowell Street Bridge. I suddenly fell after taking the last little turn from the bridge onto the Lowell Street sidewalk, in front of the Visiting Nurses Association building. I guess I must have hit some ice but I'm really not sure.

I somehow managed to get myself up and ride home to Day Street, but I'm in a lot of pain right now, on my left side from my underarm around to my back. Probably bruised a bunch of ribs. [Edit: My doctor phoned me a couple days later to inform me that I didn't just bruise a couple of ribs, I cracked them.]

If you're riding your bike this week, be careful -- at least, more careful than I apparently was.
