It's my new notecard!
Waiting for the supplies to come from Papersource and the Gocco supply shop, but this is my new notecard:

The brown is going to be the only plate; the logo's going to be put on via a sticker. I might also decide to do it brown on white instead - haven't decided yet. Which do you guys prefer? It goes in a lime green envelope, too - so to be all brand-appropriate n'stuff.

I can't wait to play around with screens and ink!

the bedroom is going to need to be painted.
there's just too much grime on the walls. The person who was in there previous to Tyler treated it like crap (as I know tyler did not put glow in the dark stickers on the walls), and so I need to paint it. I was trying to wash it, but all that happened was the grime got watery and covers more (where the paint didn't just come off).

I Guess I DO Have A Heresy Button After All
Not really a vidding post, but I found myself mildly outraged during one of the vids I saw this weekend.

No, not one of the political ones or the incest one, or anything like that. It surprised me because it was a button that I didn't know I had. I'm as prepared as anyone I know to accept perfectly nice songs being used for humorous intent in vids, but then this one came around in the last round of the Auction Vids, and it was a funny one set to "I Ain't Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You" by Aretha Franklin -- yes, the original.

I mean... I mean, it's a SERIOUS song. Not only that, it's a classic, it's one of the finest performances of the Soul era, it's one of the premiere female compositions in popular music history. Had I not been in a darkened room full of rapt fans, I would have sputtered.

I very suddenly found myself being viscerally outraged -- really just a flash, but in that moment I fully understood how a veteran must feel when the flag is trampled, a capital-C Christian feels when there's blasphemy, et cetera.

So I do have an unwritten rule I was previously unaware of and it's this: You Don't Make Fun of the First Lady of Soul.

There's not many vids that hit me this way, for sure. I wouldn't be surprised if I was the only one in the audience who felt that way, from the laughter and general attitude on display, either. Maybe this is just another example of my descent into old-fogey-tude?

something
Yep. Something.

Several somethings. None really worth writing about, other than to say that the director of the shelter here is a really miserable woman, who seems to hate her job. She's usually up in her office during the day, so we don't ever see her, but she was down in the kitchen when we came in tonight, and was causing trouble for people, including me.

But... my annoyance was short lived, because all the other staff were nice to me, and also because I got a movie at the silly little Davis Square library that I'm looking forward to watching tonight. It's Chocolat, which is a romantic gypsy movie, with Johnny Depp. Perfect for me today, as I'm feeling very gypsy-ish, and obviously seeking romance in any way I can get it, vicariously or otherwise, and I'm ok with Johnny Depp as the romantic lead... :-)

Oh, and ketchup potato chips. I found them at a little Hispanic market on Columbia Ave (I think) between Central Square and Cambridge Ave. They were really good. Though clearly really unhealthy!

And... I got a cure surprise the other day when I listened to an NLP training audio by the adorable Canadian British guy Jamie Smart and discovered that he answered one of my questions I'd submitted to him on the recording. He even got the pronunciation of my name right, which was unexpected. I wasn't terribly impressed with his answer, but I ended up answering it myself during his training, and was really happy with what my mind came up with. So it all worked out well, and made me feel all tingly inside to hear my name mentioned in the training, too.

Finally, I came up with an inspiring way to do my book/s today, which I think might really work well, and get me some money soon. So go me!

Should I spend $400 on another semester of pottery?

I'm taking a pottery class.  I missed the class on putting handles on mugs, and  haven't been able to glaze  any pottery yet, so the upshot is that I really don't know how to make anything useful.  I've enjoyed the class but now know that I'm not going to keep pottery as a long term hobby.  The question -- do I spend over $400 to finish learning to make stuff this fall (this would leave me feeling like I'd learned something; give me a sense of completion) or save the money to spend on a Wii Fit or something?  I'd like to "finish" this project, but is it worth that much to me?  (For reference, my finances are very good right now.  I can afford it.)

Vegetable booty! (farm share, weeks 10 and 11)
last week's haul )

This week, I got:
  • three pounds of tomatoes (regular red and some heirloom)
  • five ears of corn
  • a pound of carrots (large ones)
  • a pound of beets (no greens)
  • a pound and a quarter of cucumbers (I chose little-ish pickling ones)
  • a head of garlic
  • a pound of peppers (I got mostly the purple-over-light-green ones, also one oddball that was yellow-orange streaked with purple)
  • two small Walla Walla onions (note to self: buy onions!)
  • a head of celery (huge; I'm not a huge fan, and I'm not sure what to do with it all. Help?)
  • a head of fennel (really, I'd like to call it a fan of fennel; it looks like it would be a nice stand in for a palm frond if necessary)

Still left from previous weeks: half a small head of red cabbage, some smallish carrots in three colors, and some rather elderly Hakurei turnips.

First thoughts: Israeli salad with feta and/or olives; some form of corn-tomato salad; roasted carrots, beets, and fennel; sauteed red cabbage and carrots with polenta cubes; perhaps some garlicky sauteed pepper dish?

P.S. This Saturday is the farm's annual tomato festival, which includes a tomato tasting of the 60-odd varieties they grow. I can't go (it's Shabbat!), but my share gives me the right to get two people in free. Let me know if you'd like to take my place. (Note: the farm is in Granby, MA; it's a noticeable schlep from Boston.)

And wholly tangential: well after yesterday's rain, there were two blackouts in my neighborhood last night. Neither was very long, but both were after dark, and I noticed that bicyclists without lights really were pretty invisible as they zoomed by.

A tale of two Marthas...
So, the new postdoc in the lab is British AND named Martha.  Which makes for some real tangential thought processes when I'm having a conversation with her (or about her, even).

Martha: blah blah blah something about science and our various projects in her lovely British accent blah blah blah
Me (in my mind): Martha... tee hee hee... Doctor Who... tee hee hee... David Tennant... tee hee hee... so sexy... *drooooool*
Me (out loud): Uhhhhhhh...

Yeah.

At least I can be glad her last name isn't Jones...
