Contested primary in Medford: Donato, McCabe, Caralis
We've got another nearby contested Democratic primary nearby that Ron didn't mention in his post reminding us that Wednesday, August 27th, is the voter registration deadline for the primary. This race is in the rest of Medford, the parts that aren't in Carl Sciortino's Medford/Somerville district.
All three of them answered the Progressive Democrats of Somerville questionnaire, although PDS ended up choosing not to endorse (I wasn't at the meeting but I remember some people saying PDS should focus on the important race in Somerville and not put its resources into a Medford-only race this time) : Paul Donato, Patrick McCabe, Jim Caralis
... my opinion:
Summary: Donato is too conservative, and voted to ban gay marriage. Patrick McCabe is the best progressive challenger, and the most likely to win. I support McCabe. ()
Paul Donato is, IMO, out of step with today's Medford (and Somerville), and I disagree with him on a number of issues. He was one of the last few state reps to vote to ban gay marriage at the very end. I'd like to see a progressive challenger beat him.
Patrick McCabe is that candidate. He's been running since last June, and I announced his candidacy on Blue Mass Group after talking to him for a while about why he was running and what he wanted to do. Here's his post introducing himself.
Jim Caralis entered the race earlier this year, and left many of us wondering why. His positions and the values he espouses are very similar to McCabe's, but because we don't have instant runoff or preference voting, that simply makes it easier for Donato to win even if he gets less than 50%. McCabe has been running for a longer time, and his ties to unions, his background as a veteran, and his experience as a union organizer make him a much stronger candidate. We've had discussions on Blue Mass Group with Caralis asking why he's running and haven't gotten a more convincing answer than "I've always wanted to be a state rep" and that he has a right to run. Well, of course he has a right to run, but he's not entitled to your vote, so I suggest that if you want to see a progressive Democrat win this race, vote for Patrick McCabe.
