Seen at the Davis Square farmers' market

The guy at the stand said, "People keep taking pictures of this tomato, but no one will buy it!"

Nooo... Think of all the people who got to enjoy looking at it after you took your photo! Then again, I guess you could always have bought it and then charged a fee for people to take photos with it... cha-ching!

Ah, true! I actually got there a few minutes before the farmer's market closed, so there probably weren't any phallic tomato admirers after me. The poor tomato had to go home and cry itself to sleep. :(

I would have bought it and bit off the naughty bit right then and there (while someone took a picture, of course).

When I was a kid in the wilds of upstate NH, my parents ran a tomato stand out of our garage every summer to help pay for school clothes, and it was my job to keep an eye out for customers. We used to get a LOT of those tomatoes, and they always went into what we called "canners"--the not so pretty ones that were bought in bulk for, well, canning. I didn't think this was fair, so I arranged a whole bunch of them on the stand one day w/a small sign saying "Buy me, please! I'm lonely!"

My mom didn't realize what I'd done until one of her customers couldn't stop laughing, and then she remembered that a couple of others had been chuckling away to themselves as well...ah, the innocence of childhood. (No, I didn't really get in trouble for it, although I don't remember exactly what my mom said about it...)

How I wish I'd had a digital camera some years ago the time I ran across my friend at the Somerville community gardens near Davis and she gave me a cucumber she had just picked that was ... shaped just right.

Don't you think this hilarious rap song would be perfectly appropriate to listen to while contemplating phallic produce?

You might also be interested to read about a somewhat-related phenomenon called ice spikes
