Paid studies at Tufts University
Hopefully this is an appropriate post for the community. In case folks don't know about this, there is usually a steady trickle of experiments at Tufts that pay around $10/hr. They are usually posted at TuftsLife on the front page. As you might have gathered, I too have an experiment (Psychology Dept at Tufts, language type stuff) and I'm looking for participants

This is an ERP study. These experiments measure your brainwave activity while you perform a task (or tasks). During the first part of the experiment, we place something like a shower cap on your head. We then squirt small quantities of gel into holes into the cap which allows a connection between your scalp and sensors in the cap. This procedure takes between 20-45 minutes. Afterwards, you will be asked to read a number of sentences and make decisions as to whether the sentence make sense or not. This part takes between 45 and 75 minutes. The whole thing takes no more than two hours.

The gel washes out easily with water. Most people are able to get the gel out in the bathrooms available, but some people decide to go home and wash their hair more completely after the experiment. You should probably bring a brush/comb with you.

In order to participate, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be between 18-25 years old

  • English first and only language learned before age 5

  • Right handed

  • No history of head trauma

  • Not currently taking psychoactive medications

If you qualify and are interested in participating or have questions, please email me directly ( mpaczy02 you-know-the-symbol tufts period edu ). For privacy reasons please do not express interest by leaving a comment.

The experiment pays $20.

Thanks for the suggestion. Harvard and MIT also have psych studies frequently, as well. I think they are a lot of fun!

It's too bad that so many of them limit participation to younger adults, though. We middle aged folks apparently aren't interesting enough to study... :-)

It is an unfortunate limit, primarily driven by the need to keep the sample population in a limited age range and undergraduates being the most available population around. However, our lab does in fact need middle aged participants on a fairly regular basis. I'll be sure to post about these as they come around.

Here's Harvard's Dept. of Psychology sign-up link:

https://husp.sona-systems.com/

MIT's AgeLab also does paid studies:

http://web.mit.edu/agelab/ (I drove a simulator car around for an hour in the worst kind of Boston traffic while they measured my vitals. All the images were projected on a screen in front of me.)

And always check out Craigslist Volunteer Opportunities for paid studies as well.

The driving simulator sounds like fun. How old do you have to be, and can I do it evenings or weekends?

The ages vary. A couple of days ago they had a Craigslist post up looking for 20-29 and 35-40. They do all kinds of research on all ages and then do comparisons. I did my study during the day, but I think they have some flexibility depending upon the age group. Best thing to do is to sign up and see.

The driving I did reminded me of being in bumper to bumper traffic at rush hour in some city I'm not familiar with. I was exhausted and jittery after doing the experiment.

I did lots of stuff like this when I was unemployed. I'm keeping my list so I have a source of entertainment and income when I retire.

Oh, to be 25 again!
And the pleasure of having you squirt gel on my head...(er, heh)

To add another option for those who might like to participate in a study, I work in a lab at MIT, and we're looking for 4-10 year olds for studies about language and reading. Information about the studies is at http://web.mit.edu/gabrieli-lab/kid.htm.
We offer gift certificates to Barnes & Noble as a thank you!
