Tuesday was another google-filled work day. I had a boring macaroni salad for lunch with cut pineapple (the pineapple was a little on the over-ripe side so that was gross...I was surprised because usually Longos fruit is amazing and this is the first time I've encountered gross pineapple at Longos). Anyway, walked over to the Eaton's Centre after work and browsed through Smart Set, not finding anything worth while, then Shoppers. I looked at Bakeware at The Bay but didn't end up buying their spring-form pans because I was hoping for heat insulated ones...doesn't look like these exist...they had a 3-pack with different sizes at Canadian Tire which is the same price as a single pan at The Bay, but it doesn't seem as heavy, which is bad -- stuff will burn easily. I received two voicemail messages -- hurrah, finally people calling me back requesting interviews! One was for a tutoring company and the other was from a random recruiting company which saw my resume on Monster, the job he had would be in Woodbridge which is sort of out of the way for me. I decided to call back tomorrow after my adult literacy interview. I went into Pickle Barrel and waited for Marina, I guess it was lucky that I chose to sit in the lounge area because the dinner area downstairs was apparently packed. I think I now understand why it feels so embarrassing to go into a restuarant on your own before your "guests" arrive...I felt the inclination to say, "they'll arrive soon...I hope."...haha. Well, Marina finally arrived and we ordered after she figured out which salad was the one she had last time. I chose the chicken pesto fusili because they didn't have salmon linguine which is what I have almost every time I go to Pickle Barrel...blah, for some reason I was expecting a thinner sauce which was less creamy, still good though, but I'm not a huge fan of cream sauces in general. I was so full though which is rare because I almost always finish everything. Oh well. The two of us rushed over to Dundas Square and were quite surprised (and pleased) to discover that there were a bunch of chairs set up for the movie...woohoo! However, we sat there and nothing started until 9pm...boo...but I guess it was good that we got there really early because we had great seats second row centre and EB showed up as well :) Pity though that the movie was cut short for us due to the rain...but the good news is we got home at a decent hour, so I guess things worked out for the best. I was so tired when I got home...I went to sleep soon afterwards because of the interview the following day. I ended up sleeping in until 8am on Wednesday and left the house at 10am to get to Frontier College by 11am...I was running late and it was raining so I ended up walking into the wrong building! It was the apartment complex next door which looked rather posh as the man at the front desk was in a suit, I was supposed to go to the building next door...lol! Well, I met Angela and she was really nice and enthusiastic we talked for a bit and it wasn't much of an interview, she told me a whole bunch of stuff about the program and the college which I learned is actually quite established, but the adult literacy and life skills program is the only one that's available in Toronto. I really hope I can work them into my schedule...they're hoping that I have a free spot on Tuesdays from 10am to 12pm. So basically I have it, after they run a police check on me and I let them know my schedule. Fingers crossed that I can work them in... On my way to Summerhill station, I got stopped by a random guy on the street who wanted to sell his TTC tickets to me. He said, "I've asked half of Toronto and I'm hoping you can help me. Could I interest you in two TTC tickets? You'd get in for cheaper than paying cash and you'd be helping me get a meal." I didn't look amused, and he said, sort of flirtatiously, "well I also accept cash or Visa" and I laughed, which I shouldn't have and he said, "You like that, eh? Well if you think I'm trying to con you, you can just buy me some food." So I said, "Well, I'm not interested in the tickets, but how much are we talking here?" I ended up just giving him $2 so he'd go away and leave me alone. I hope I didn't just support his drug habit or something :-/ I travelled to Ryerson and bought myself a metropass for August then walked over to the library building. I called the tutoring place back and chatted with Jeff for half an hour and agreed to an interview on short notice because I wasn't free either Thursday or Friday. So I walked to Union at 1:30pm, met up with Teresa who said she'd wait for David and then I subwayed to Yonge and Eglinton to meet Jeff at the Starbucks on Holly Street. So we talked for another half hour and as far as I understand, the majority of the tutoring happens on college campus in the library, the only in-home stuff will be for high school students and their client base for that isn't as established. I told him that I rely heavily on public transportation and he said that's fine so he'll only refer stuff that's along the TTC line to me. Essentially if he hires me, I'll get to set my own hours and most of the time it seemed like he was selling his company to me as opposed to me selling my skills. At the end he said, "well, I'm going to hire you and start you at $22/hour because of your writing experience, but I'll need to do a reference check, see your transcripts and get a police check as well. The only reason we're so thorough is for our clients...so yeah, not sure if my references will pull through...Jeff's hoping for stuff that shows I've worked with children and writing so I'm trying to track down Allyson." I was done at 3pm and so I went to King to meet David and Teresa...they were at Winners earlier and David made Teresa try on ugly clothes...lol. I agreed to a "makeover" so we went back to Winners and David said, "Karen, you're never going to get hired for a job wearing what you're wearing. Here take this!" So we wandered around Winners and I walked around wearing an fugly scarf which looked like Grandma's curtains, a white hat with big red sequins along the brim, a plaid purse and pink shoes with huge pink tafetta bows. We later switched the shoes because they were uncomfortable and I wore the ugly leopard printed heels (aka prostitute shoes)...haha, David and I started laughing so hard...Teresa was getting embarrassed...oops. The whole outfit would cost just over $100, but all of us decided that we didn't have a Visa and thus could not afford it :P We wandered into Sears and David said, "Feel free to dress me up" and I said, "Uh, David, that sounds a little dirty and besides, nothing is embarrassing enough here." We walked outside, heading towards Burger King so David could get his whopper and we walked by Zanzibar (the strip club that everyone at Ryerson jokes about...the fact that it's there is hilarious and odd)...in a rather loud voice David said, "So Karen, are you telling me that you work at Zanzibar?" and I said, "Yeah, every Friday evening, except I don't think my boobs are big enough for the clients and I'm a shit pole dancer." Earlier when we walked by the Bell store at King, we got free pens so David spent the day drawing on our arms...by the end, Teresa and I were covered in black ink...luckily the pen isn't too hard to rub off, otherwise I would have put up more of a fight. I did arrive home with such messages as "I'm single call me." or "I'm hot! XXX" and other things...I must have looked like I fell asleep drunk somewhere and someone wrote all over me :P Teresa and I really wanted a crepe from Richtree and we discovered that the only one that sells crepes is the big one at Union so we walked there and whilst David drew on our arms he said, "Karen, am I a bitch?" and I said, "Well, you don't really exhibit the qualities of bitchdom. It's all in the walk." So he said, "Okay Karen, show me." and I said, "Hell no!" lol...and after a bit there was a lady in black who cut in front of Teresa as we were crossing the street so David found his target and started mimicking her...his inspired walk as he called it...haha. It was funny :) So we finally got to Richtree and it was nearly 6pm, Teresa and I had our crepes and David raided our wallets and took our money. We left and David still hadn't given me back my money yet, so when we got to the subway terminal, he took out his wallet and gave me back my $90, counting out the bills. He said, "Thanks Karen for your services" and started counting the money. I think we got some weird looks. Then when no one was around he said, "So, how does it feel to prostitute yourself?" and Teresa said, "She just got back her own money." and I said, "Well, I'm not wearing my prostitute shoes!" I had fun and I was really tired out when I got home...probably the most not-so-serious thing that I've done in a long time. I miss fun things like that...next time we need to bring a camera :)
