I'm seeing David Sedaris at a small bookstore tomorrow, and I'd be really grateful if anyone could tell me how early I should arrive/things of a similar nature. Thanks!

I'm rather partial to chick lit and romances myself. I'm currently working on a 180,000 word romance/family-saga written in the style of David Sedaris. Basically, it documents my domestic life, romances, and international exploits, and I think it would appeal to hip young adults like myself. My goal is really to try to make the genre (romances/family-sagas) hip and cool for people my age (17 to 26 y/o), and in particular for people who often discard romance as "trashy". I'd like to change their opinions about it. So you may consider me an innovator, a true artist, ready to explore unexplored territories and push the boundaries. It's all rather experimental.

My question is: do you think there'd be a market for this kind of thing? You see, I would like to leave a mark like Shakespeare (if I may say so myself ), i.e. to be a rich and famous author, however, I'd also like to be considered someone who is innovative and original in scope and subject matter. Is it worth it to be experimental and "cutting-edge" avante garde, if your more imperative goal is to be rich and famous, as I say? I'm hoping that my Sedaris-like humor will suffice in attracting hip, liberal and well-traveled persons like myself, and they therefore will be open to reading a family-saga/romance.

    a good anthology
"Children Playing Before a Statue of Hercules" is a very good anthology. I've started on the first story and have just been reading straight through. Thus far, everything's very readable and enjoyable. Left off on Katherine Mansfield's "Garden Party." Until now, I've never read anything by her. She's a great writer. David Sedaris is quite good as an editor. You can really see how these authors might have influenced him.

Kristen Bell was interviewed by InStyle for their latest issue. They had her create a packing list for a beach vacation, and she mentioned reading David's books on vacation.

    David!!!!
Hi! I just joined this community! I am a big David Sedaris Fan. I started reading his short stories in the New Yorker and have been hooked ever since. I have read Me Talk Pretty One Day (lol Jesus Shaves) and Naked (my favorite) and am now reading Barrel Fever. I have also heard his Santaland diaries on NPR and just love it. The next book I want to get is Dress Your Family In Cordorouy (can't spell) and Denim. So glad to see that there are people out there who are just as crazy about David as I am!

“My hands tend to be full enough dealing with people who hate me for who I am. Concentrate too hard on the millions of people who hate you for what you are and you're likely to turn into one of those unkempt, sloppy dressers who sag beneath the weight of the two hundred political buttons they wear pinned to their coats and knapsacks.”- David Sedaris

so me and my friend were in barnes and noble a few years ago, and we saw a guy that she thought was...cute? and so we picked up the nearest book, wrote a letter inside to him and walked by and handed it to him. later on we went back to where he was, but he was gone. he left the book and i picked it up, it was "me talk pretty one day"...so i read it, ended up buying it. and i loved it so much. then i moved onto naked and dress my family. he's so funny, i love his family.

    David Sedaris rocks!
I remember the first time I was introduced to the works of David Sedaris. I was in Undergrad in Owensboro, KY and my friend (president of the English club or something like that) invited him to speak at our tiny school.

He did some readings from Barrel Fever I believe. It was 1998 so I don't remember. I do have an autographed copy. My best friend and I were in the front row in the chapel laughing hysterically at his words.

Later, at the autograph session he said we laughed at some of the most inappropriate times. (Things that normal people would not laugh at.) I remember what he wrote down in my friends book. She was a vegetarian and he wrote, "Kate, Eat more meat!!"

    Funny Funny.

This place seems somewhat empty as of late
Um, my name's Devon, and I think I'm a fan. It's true. I've known about it for a couple months now, but have never realy admitted it...

I think I am platonically in love with a gay man named David.
