Tonight - June 22 - The Armand Hammer Museum in Westwood Village near UCLA presents The American Magic-Lantern Theater at 7:00 p.m.

"Inspired by the Hammer exhibition The Darker Side of Light, the American Magic-Lantern Theater performs a Victorian era Magic-Lantern show, replete with flying ghosts, macabre goblins, and a petrifying rendition of Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven. Using original glass slides and a spectacular antique Magic-Lantern, the AMLT re-creates this popular 1890’s combination of projected color images, dramatic storytelling, live music, hilarious comedy, and frightening special effects."

All Hammer public programs are free!

The Victorians and Edwardians at Work

As ever, this books and other Victoriana are available here : http://crimsonbooksinc.storesecured.com/items/Victorian/list.htm

The Victorians and Edwardians at Work – John Hannavy

“Taking photographs of people at work is an application of the medium that is almost as old as photography itself.”

Based on John Hannavy’s personal collection of period photographs and picture postcards, The Victorians and Edwardians at Work contains many never before published images of life as it was actually lived in these eras. Many of these photos are hand-colored, doing much to alleviate the notion that the world was sepia-toned prior to World War I.

The British Library has put two million digitised pages from 19th century newspapers online, taking research out of its dusty reading rooms into people's homes.

The pay-as-you-go service brings a century of history alive from Jack the Ripper to WG Grace.

Today's news, tomorrow's fish wrapper (or website statistic on the number of clicks) - news has always been ephemeral. Read it, delete it and move on.

It is as true today as it was in the 19th century when newspaper writers churned out political speeches - often verbatim, war reports and local parish news.

Sadly, as LJ refuses to allow lj-cuts to work with anything simply cut and pasted from news sources, it was impossible to provide you with the many pictures and links in this article - get thee to the url!

Corsets for a cause!

  • Jun. 3rd, 2009 at 11:48 AM
In light of some really horrible things that have been happening in the lives of my chosen family and friends as of late, I've been feeling really ineffectual. In most of the cases, there's not squat that I can do to change circumstances for them. That said, I'm trying to do my best to assist where and when I can.

Which leads me to the following...

Back in February, I met a terrifically talented grrl ([info]itsroach) and her daughter at a con. She's been making a go of it as a costumer and crafter, but with the economy the way it is, finances have been tight for them. Right now, she's in rather dire straits and is mounting a campaign to raise funds to make sure that she and her family are secure.

Currently (through June 10th) she's offering her custom Victorian corsets that usually sell for $300 for only $150. While I don't know her terribly well, I can wholeheartedly vouch for the quality of her work. They're very well made and sturdily steel boned to provide a lovely display of cleavage...oh...and they're absolutely beautiful!

Take a peek at her work for yourself and read more about her offer...

Even if a new corset is a bit out of your budget, please feel free to cross-post or link to this post. You'll be supporting an independent artisan and getting a great piece of handmade wearable art in the process for a great price!

New website and new art!

  • Jun. 1st, 2009 at 7:02 PM

Hello,

Let me know what you guys think of the new site and the new work. Some of it is still in sketch form. I've started to collect insects, especially moths and 19th century green glass. These things are definately starting to show up in my work.

my tribute to Miss Havisham

  • May. 20th, 2009 at 5:00 PM
Recently, I sequestered myself away for a while and created a gown inspired by Miss Havisham, my favourite character from Charles Dickens' novel "Great Expectations", written in 1861.

Many of the lace motifs I've used date back to the same era. The best part of making this is getting to feel like I can honour the artistry and work of my female ancestors ~ all of whom created the various works of needle lace, embroidery, and crochet I am incorporating into this. Even the pearls that I'm using for the sleeves (and possibly collar) came from one of my great-grandmother's broken necklaces.

Here are a few preview peeks for now:

two more await... )

The Victorian Cemetery

  • May. 18th, 2009 at 2:51 PM

A newly released title that I thought would interest you.  As ever, this and other titles may be found and purchased here :

http://crimsonbooksinc.storesecured.com/items/Victorian/list.htm

The Victorian Cemetery – Sarah Rutherford

“A cemetery is a place for burials, other than a churchyard attached to a regular place of worship. Cemeteries are usually multi-denominational but may belong to a single denomination…This definition conveys no idea of the richness and variety of cemeteries, their place at the heart of a long-lost cult of death and mourning, nor their importance as a 19th century phenomenon.”

A new type of burial place was needed for a new age, an idealized garden (many were laid out in the style of a Pleasure Gardens), where those of every background mingled, if not too closely.
