Dark Side of the Net Closed Until 2010, but I have a new blog..

Hello my dark and lovely friends,

This week I took down the Dark Side of the Net database of links, for the first time in sixteen years.

It breaks my heart to have to do this, but it doesn't make sense to keep offering my thousands of hours of work since 1993, for free for people to come steal it and claim it as their own, run ads against my content I worked so hard to develop, and come back to leech more of my hard work every time I add something.

For now, you can visit the new Dark Side of the Net blog. And I will still be updating Dark Side of the News, right here on the left side of the page (scroll down).

In 2010, Dark Side of the Net will come back with a redesign, a new search engine, and thousands of new links. Hopefully the new system will make it a little harder for lazy, unscrupulous people to come steal everything - but you'd be amazed how much time thieves spend to circumvent things in order to steal data to pretend their website has the largest goth, Halloween or horror links database in the world when it doesn't. Sigh.

It has been a pleasure sharing my finds with you all these years.

I can't seem to wean myself off of Blogger's lovely feature where I can write posts ahead of time and backdate them so they arrive every day on time. I keep running out of time to log into Livejournal every day to update - thus delaying Goth Almanac on Twitter too.

Update on the future of Darklinks.com

Thanks everyone for your input over the past few days. I very nearly deleted Darklinks and shut it down for good.

More details later, but for now:

An awesome famous webmaster from the horror scene is helping me convert Darklinks into a less-easily-stealable format AND add a blog feed to the front page, so we'll have the best of both worlds: Updated Blog, ...and extensive link database. We'll probably also have a search engine.

We'll still have my uglyass page design though!

The Future of Darklinks.com - Input needed

Would you enjoy Dark Side of the Net as much, or more, or less if it was a blog (rather than a database with some rather dead links but also thousands of working ones, the way it currently is?)

I'm depressed today after finding out how much money it will take to file a lawsuit against someone who has copied over 95% of Dark Side of the Net's links, pretending they did all the work, and selling advertisements along next to them.

I have a compilation copyright, but it's expensive to pursue when some lazy loser purloins your 15 years of work choosing, selecting, annotating, editing and maintaining links. That's money I'd rather spend on my kids or on a much needed new patio, new car or vet bills for my asthmatic kitty Jack.

It occurs to me that a blog, by virtue of including more writing and less databasey link troves, is an easier and less expensive copyright to defend. A plagiarist would probably not copy over entire chunks of blog posts - and they'd be easier to find and litigate against if they did, than someone scraping my links database and pretending they'd magically found all those links themselves.

I'm crying, frustrated and I feel like shutting Dark Side of the Net down completely tonight. It's been fifteen years of various assholes copying my hard work, stripping my copyright notice and my name and linkbacks from my work, and pretending it's their own. Running ads on it and profiting from it. Ugh. I don't know if I have the energy for this much longer.

I'm sitting on around 5,000 sorted, carefully chosen, annotated Halloween links that haven't been added to Darklinks yet, fearful after all that work to just add them to the website where anyone can come copy them and make money off my content. I can just see someone copying over everything exactly, then proudly proclaiming on their website "The largest directory of Halloween links!" You can't really claim that when all you did was copy the *actual* largest directory..

I wonder if you guys would find a blog useful, or if you'd miss the database of backlinks that I would be removing and keeping only for my personal reference use as I looked for new links to add or old links to revisit and talk about. Is it a blog you'd check a few times a day? (Updates would still be mentioned on Twitter and Facebook, etc).

If Darklinks was a blog:

- The domain name wouldn't change, and we'd finally get rid of my outdated 1998 text only ugly red and black template.

- More visual, with graphics of some of the websites I was reviewing.

- I'd tend to update it the way I update Facebook. I'd disappear for a couple days, then have a huge flurry of activity with 7 or 8 posts that day. Each post would probably have four or five links, or maybe more if I was covering a whole subject such as worthwhile steampunk resources, etc. If you didn't happen to be interested in steampunk, you'd have to skip over that post and wait for me to post something else you might be more interested in.

- You'd no longer be able to access my music links to see all the worthwhile Siouxsie or The Cure links I know about. Instead, you'd have to search the blog to see if I'd mentioned any new Siouxsie sites or written a blog post recently about some goth music sites and happened to mention a few of hers.

- There'd be no more link list of hundreds of links to Halloween recipes. Instead, I'd throw out a few witch-hat cupcake recipe type links mixed in with a post about a haunted house in Georgia, mixed in with a couple other random Halloween links. You'd have to google Halloween Recipes for yourself.

- The vast numbers of hundreds of dead links on Dark Side of the Net would disappear, so info would be fresh, up to date, with no dead links unless you crawled backwards into the archive. I'd likely delete archived posts eventually just to prevent scrapers from stealing all the old links.

- Those of you submitting your sites to be added, would likely have a much faster turnaround time, as I'd add them in a blog post faster than I would if I had to categorize them and fit them into my existing links.

A Night of Horror - An international horror film festival, March 25-April 3, 2010 in Sydney, Australia. This sounds cool, I need to win the lottery!
Asylum - A goth/industrial club in Sacramento, on Sundays.
Black Cat Campaign - A Romanian effort to fight intolerance and discrimination against individuals who look or dress differently. They were inspired by the Sophie Lancaster Foundation.
Crypticon Minneapolis - A horror convention November 6-8 2009 in Bloomington.
Curious Expeditions - A very well done steampunk blog with posts on art, clockpunk, bibliophilia, museums, travel, and food. Amazingly fun to explore here!
Dark Imaginings - A shop selling haunted changing portraits and spooky special effects. They also sell "haunted mirrors."
Deadpit Radio - A horror radio show. You can listen to past shows in the online archive.

New Happenings at Darklinks.com

I have very little Internet access at the moment (due to living in a remote lake house with family in a very very small town), so don't expect too many updates to Dark Side of the Net until early September when I move back home again. (Yay! I can't wait!)

Meanwhile, I've started two new Groups at the Darklinks network:

Being Human, for fans of the British show involving a ghost, werewolf and vampire who are roommates.

Sherlock Holmes - An off-topic group for the upcoming Robert Downey Jr. film with a dark feel and a bit of steampunkish look (though I hear it wasn't intentional) to it.

In the Dark Side Book Club, we're currently reading Guillermo del Toro's "The Strain."

In our Re-Watching group, we're watching "The Hunger" in August, all at our separate homes as we have time, then coming together on the group to discuss what it was like to revisit this movie. (Some of our group members are young enough they never saw it in the theater or on DVD to begin with!)

We'll be Re-Watching "Interview with the Vampire" in September 2009.

I'm working with several people to develop a few courses for Dark Side University for fall 2009. We're working on "History of Halloween," "Internet Research 101," "Promoting Your Goth Business," and "History of Horror Television." Dark Side University is of course a made-up college with no accreditation, and our courses are free to members of the Darklinks network.

In other news, I currently have a couple thousand new Halloween links ready and waiting to be added to the page in time for Halloween. What am I waiting on? More Internet access of course, but I'm also consulting an attorney about several current instances of Darklinks.com being copied in entirety. I don't have much incentive to put hundreds of hours of research work into my Halloween links (which I don't make any money for doing) when so many people are just stealing the whole website, copying it, removing my name from it and taking credit for themselves. I want to keep Darklinks free for everyone to use without having to subscribe or pay anything, but this is difficult when I'm spending so much money on attorneys because of issues like this. Let's see what happens over the next couple weeks!

Butcher Brand - An artist's blog and website. He draws zombies, monsters, mummies, and other creepy things.
Dark Bikes - A new Facebook group for bike enthusiasts who also lean towards goth, punk, or industrial persuasions.
DeadThyme - A goth, industrial and metal radio show based in Houston. You can listen online while the show is live, Sunday nights.
Derailed - A virtual goth/industrial/electro club, set on an island in Second Life. What an extremely cool idea. The head DJ is DaemonChadeau.
Dr. Morose & Miss Macabre's House of Oddities - Two extremely talented artists present their artworks, voodoo ragdolls, Etsy shop, shadow boxes, creepy masks, and other intriguing creations. Worth a look and then a second look!
Eternal Nightmare Studio - The horror and comic art of Kevin Hurtack.
Everyday Decay - A twice-weekly webcomic about zombies. It's really well done! Recommended.
Horror Biz - A Livejournal community for professionals and shopowners working in the Halloween, horror and haunt industries.
Horror Tattoos - A Livejournal community where people are posting pics of their amazingly cool horror-themed tattoos.
Jane Doe Horror - "Horror flicks reviewed by chicks." Very nicely done, but could use a bit more frequent updating. They also offer a forum.
KillerCon - A brand new horror writer/editor/fan convention, September 17-20 in Las Vegas. Actress Heather Graham is the guest of honor, and Joe R. Lansdale will also make an appearance.
Harpers Island - CBS network's attempt at spooky television. 13 episodes will air, each featuring a murder.
Monstropedia - An encyclopedia of monsters in myth, magic and legend. Mostly stuff copied over from Wikipedia, but this provides a nice easy way to browse the topic.
Racks and Razors - A horror webzine, featuring interviews, a radio show, and horror TV and movie reviews.

Tonight I registered www.gothalmanac.com. It points to the Livejournal community I've been posting to for a while now.

I'm working on adding more gothcentric news and trivia to the almanac - currently it's mostly just anniversaries of horror movie release dates. Yawn!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

In case you noticed Dark Side of the Net being down for three days, I apologize for the inconvenience. A bit too much traveling lately has made it difficult to keep on top of things. We're back up and running and in good shape now.

I finally broke down and got on Facebook, though I'm not sure what sorts of things I'll be sharing and posting on there.

Darklinks.com also has a Facebook Page.

Right now I'm watching last night's Colbert Report, which featured Neil Gaiman talking about the Graveyard Book.

Ax Wound Zine - A feminist horror webzine. "I want both the zine and the website to provide a safe, stimulating environment for feminists who struggle with their enjoyment of these films, and a place to explore what these films are about, and why we love them so much." The zine offers reviews of movies they've seen, books they've read, and conventions they've attended. The articles include "The Women of 'Dracula:' A Study of Victorian Gender Identity and Nationalism;" "Menstrual Monsters in the Horror Film," and "Girls, Women, and Enjoyment of the Horror Genre." This is interesting, I hope they keep producing this zine!

Being Human - The BBC's official site for its new vampire horror drama TV series. Three housemates struggle to live normal lives, despite the fact one of them is a vampire, one is a werewolf, and one is a ghost. It airs on BBC Three.

Coilhouse - Everywhere I look, people are raving about this magazine/blog. The buzz surrounding it is incredible. It covers alternative culture of the past, and imagines it for the future, ignoring the present with its prepackaged, highly marketed, commercial faux-alternative culture. There's a blog and a print magazine that is sold on store shelves. They cover art, fashion, technology, music, and film. Just to give you an idea, recent blog posts have involved the death of The Cramps' Lux Interior, Cthulhu meditation, the Edwardian Ball, and Kathy Acker. Stop what you're doing right now and go visit this blog!

Coraline.com - The stunningly beautiful official site for the upcoming Henry Selick movie. The website offers a trailer, an interactive map of Coraline's world, and info on the film and its producers. What I'm not seeing here is screencaps, wallpapers, making-of videos and other goodies. I hope they add them soon. Make yourself button eyes using this link.

Coraline at Borders Backlot - Behind the scenes look at the making of "Coraline." An interview with Neil Gaiman, the theatrical trailer, and videos on the making of the characters and movie. The site is very video intensive. You can also read an excerpt from the book.

Corrosion - New Orleans' goth club. It takes place Sunday nights at the Dragon's Den.

Dawn to Dusk Gifts - A webstore selling wholesale and retail handcrafted goth home decor items. There are some gorgeous skulls here, soaps, necklaces, kids' clothes, and purses. They also sell some items they didn't craft themselves, such as Emily the Strange, Nightmare Before Christmas, and Living Dead Dolls. This shop is fun to browse.

Demons - The official site at ITV for their six-part supernatural series. It premiered on January 3, 2009.

Flames Rising - A horror webzine for fans of horror and dark fantasy entertainment. Interviews, reviews, articles, blog entries and fiction. There is a lot of high quality stuff here.

Fragile Beauty - A shop selling gorgeous gothic stained glass. Besides window panels, they sell a coffin tray, coffin box, incense burners, candle screens, cardholders, and sconces. Beautiful things here!

Ghost Hunters - A social network for ghost hunters and people interested in the paranormal. There are videos, forums, and photos.

Graveyard Records & Collectibles - A horror shop selling toys, action figures, busts, DVDs and more stuff for horror aficionados.

The Haunting in Connecticut - The official page for the upcoming horror film, based on a supposedly true ghost story.

Haute Macabre - A blog about goth fashion and accessories. It's written by a couple Suicide Girls and Gala Darling from one of my favorite non-goth blogs, Icing. There's even a section for domestigoths. This is a "ooh look what cool things I found" site without cramming affiliate links down your throat. Nicely done.

Klockwerks - A shop selling amazing handcrafted steampunk-style timepieces.

Loving True Blood - An LJ community based on the "Loving True Blood in Dallas" blog about the TV show.

Merlottes - "Sookie's Literary Corner." An LJ community for fans of the HBO "True Blood" series.

Monster Kookies - An Etsy shop selling creepy, silly, or gory pendants, rings, ornaments, and steampunk anatomical heart trinkets.

Orchestra Diabolica - A musician who creates "dark orchestral.. eerie.. unsettling" music.

Plasticland - A shop selling retro-inspired brand new clothes, handbags, and shoes. Most stuff here isn't goth, but I'm including the link because they have cool pieces you can pick up and make work with your existing goth wardrobe. They also have some cool retro shoes with a goth feel, and striped stockings. There's also a few Lolitaesque pieces here and there. The Home Decor section is mostly cute vintage-styled stuff, but there's also skeleton-hand servers, Lucite skull votive holders, and the "Creepy Cute Crochet" book.

New Moon Movie - Soundtrack, release date, videos, wallpapers, and news on the Twilight sequel.

"9" - The trailer for the next animated Tim Burton movie.

Purevile - An Etsy shop selling "post-Apocalyptic Victorian" clothing and accessories. All handmade, created from antiques, keys, lace, and heirlooms.

Ragwater Revue - A goth/blues/garage band from San Francisco. I can't help but compare the lead singer's vocals to Siouxsie.

Requiem - A goth club, first Monday of every month, in St. Louis, MO. They play goth, industrial, EBM, darkwave and synthpop.

Retroscope Fashions - A shop selling Gothic Lolita, Victorian, and punk men's and women's clothing, plus mini hats, accessories, and parasols.

Seattle Steamrats - A Northwest steampunk community. There's a gallery, events list, and "parlour" at Google Groups. Lovely site design, too.

Sepiachord - A website chronicling "sepiachord" music - influenced by steampunk, Neo-Victorians, etc. "Sepiachord hosts a lifestyle for a past that never was, and for a future that never will be." They also have a Livejournal.

The Sookie Club - A Livejournal community for fans of the Charlaine Harris Sookie Stackhouse novels. The "True Blood" TV show is based on them.

Spellbound - A goth club in Washington, DC. They have a MySpace and a Livejournal as well.

Spookypop - The art of Doktor A. Here you can see a steampunk Pacman game, naturally called "Pac Gentleman." He's also designed lots of really freaky toys, some for Medicom. He also shares some of his paintings. This is a really cool site to explore.

Tonner Twilight Dolls - The Tonner doll company's page for their Edward Cullen and Bella Swan dolls. You can pre-order them here. They also have an info page.

True Blood Fic - A Livejournal community with "True Blood" based fan fiction.

True-Blood.Net - All about the HBO "True Blood" TV series. A radio show, cast bios, spoilers, links, features, interviews, and news. A great source of info for fans of the show.

True Blood TV - The largest LJ community for "True Blood" show fans.

Twilight Fangs - A website for Twilight fans, with articles on celebrities who are fans of Twilight; Twilight Valentine's Day cards; info on Twilight dolls and Necco candies.

Vampgeist - A site seeking to explore the vampire archetype, and provide support to the real vampire community. They're building a chatroom, discussion area, society, and a community. The writing here is clear and obviously has been written by someone with writing talent, who has put a lot of time and effort into building the site. But I'd like to understand what the blocky logo means, and why the webdesign looks like a 1993-era Geocities page. Their Ning community is off to a good start.

Vamp Pop - A new LJ blog with news on vampires in pop culture.

The Vampire Project - "An online vampire research portal, with resources and information, terminology, folklore and historical writings." It's refreshing to see a site like this so very well fleshed out well before the link is sent to me. There's already a ton of interesting articles to read here, plus news on upcoming vampire events, and links to related news articles. This definitely will be a handy resource for people interested in vampires.

White Light Investigations - A paranormal investigation team based in the southeast of England.

The White Peacock - A California-based store selling Gothic Lolita items online, as well as in their Lomita, CA storefront. They sell aprons, dresses, skirts, accessories, and a few men's items.

Wicked Faire - An adults-only event held February 20-22 in Whippany, New Jersey. It starts as a Renaissance Faire, but actually features a wide variety of entertainment, including Voltaire, Ego Likeness, an erotic hypnotist, and several steampunk events.

Wildilocks - A store based in Perth, Australia. They specialize in hair accessories, but also sell steampunk, corsets, clothing, and accessories. Browse the gallery for some really cool pics.

The Xploding Boys - A Cure tribute band from Portland. They also have a Livejournal and a Myspace.
