Emergency Contraception in N.C.
From the News & Observer, an NC Triangle news source: The N.C. Board of Pharmacy now allows pharmacists to refuse to fill prescriptions for "morning after" birth-control pills but requires them to find alternative arrangements for the client.

Note the following from deep in the article:

An Eckerd Drug representative said pharmacists may not refuse to fill a prescription on the basis of any religious, political or moral beliefs.

CVS, Kerr, and Wal-Mart, however, have more "liberal" policies. Letters, anyone? Reverse boycott?

I've always found the idea of the reverse boycott to be very effective. A business can shrug off the standard boycott by assuming that eventually the customer will return. With a reverse boycott, where not only do you not patronize the targeted business - you actively patronize competitors with better policies, that lets them know that they may lose your business permanently if the ydo not change before you get in the habit of shopping with the other merchant.

I am SO glad that the main pharmacy in my town is a Brooks, which is an Eckerd subsidiary...and I know the pharmacists there, and none of them would refuse to fill a birth control prescription.

As for CVS...I rarely go there anyway, and this is just another reason not to.

My husband uses a local CVS for late-night or last-minute OTC purchases. I'm going to ask him not to go there anymore, though.

Unfortunately, Eckerd doesn't service my area.

The scary thing is, CVS, Rite-Aid, and Kroger's are pretty much our three non-blatantly-dominionist-friendly druggists here (the others being Wal-Mart, whose owners contribute to dominionist causes and even have at times had store *policies* regarding emergency contraception, and a private druggist who distributes the "Christian Yellow Pages" (which is a dominionist-published list of explicitly dominionist-friendly businesses, and which requires listed businesses to sign a statement of faith as a part of being included)...)

What drug store do you patronize right now? Is mail-order an option for you? Perhaps you can find an online pharmacy with non-Dominionist policies.

"Christian Yellow Pages"

Is this a national or local publication?

Right now, unfortunately, CVS (though I may be changing to Rite-Aid soon, thanks to this--does anyone have info on Rite-Aid's or Kroger Pharmacy's policies on this, by the way?)

Mail order generally isn't an option for me, because generally I try to actively avoid having to take prescription meds unless I absolutely have to (and mail order, whilst convenient for things like regular meds...isn't so convenient for things like schedule III narcotics when one returns from the dentist). If all else fails, I may consider it, however.

As for the "Christian Yellow Pages"...the corporation that does it is nationwide (and has been in existence for a goodly fifteen years or more; I remember a book on anti-Semitism actually expressing concern that the "Christian Yellow Pages" could increase the risk of anti-Semitism back in the late 80's), the directories are local however. (Much like national or regional publishers actually are the ones printing the non-dominionist Yellow Pages, but the listings are local.)

In fact, at least one reference I've seen dates it back to at least the 70's and possibly earlier, and also explicitly links it to dominionism (http://www.religion-online.org/showarticle.asp?title=1172 which was actually in a notice from the Presbyterian Church)

One source notes these have been published since 1973 (www.sbaer.uca.edu/research/ssbia/1990/PDF/10.pdf (warning: PDF)) which should give an indication just how *long* dominionists have been planning the destruction of democracy.

That Religion On-Line database is marvelous - three of my old sociology of religion professors have articles up. And all the pieces by Tillich and Reinhold Niebuhr and the rest - what a treasure trove!

I wrote a letter to Walmart, and their response was... disappointing to say the least.

Rite-Aid

Anyone know Rite-Aid's stance on this whole mess?

That's where I usually get my prescriptions (but I'm all but locked into them thanks to my health insurance).
