| About: | LiveJournal has exploded in controversy over the recent banning of a number of fandom journals. Free speech is important, and so are creative outlets like fandom. But those of us who are upset about the situation on LiveJournal have computers. Those of us who are upset about the situation on LiveJournal have clothing, and food, and homes. Those of us who are upset about the situation on LiveJournal know we have a right to free speech and can speak out when it is threatened. There are people who have none of those things. And so, there is this community. This community will be modeled on ETA: A couple of people have reported that when they have attempted to donate $10 to Relief, International, they have received an email confirmation stating that they donated $25 instead. No one has yet indicated that their credit card has shown a charge of $25, so it's unclear whether this an issue with a messed-up autoresponse email or whether they are actually charging more than is selected. No issues have been reported for donations of any other denomination. ETA: At least one person was charged the full $25 after attempting to donate a smaller amount. If you want to donate less than $25, it is probably best to be on the safe side and to donate to one of the other charities that are listed below. There was also one report of a browser popping up an error message saying Relief, International's site is not encrypted. I didn't see that message when I donated, but I do want to put all the information out there. We selected Relief, International to be the primary donation link because research seemed to show that they were working most directly and effectively with the refugees in Darfur, and they have a top rating from Charity Navigator. However, if you're uncomfortable with the above-outlined issues, here are some other charities working in Darfur currently, so you can select your own. LINKS An Amnesty International fact sheet, where you can get a broad overview of the situation in Darfur. This contains links to more specific information about various aspects of the conflict and the relief efforts as well. A document (PDF) that details the work that Relief, International is doing, so that you will know what your money is going for. Relief, International's work is detailed on pages 81-82. They work in the refugee camps to provide food, health care, essential relief commodities (blankets, cooking utensils, etc.), and employment and income generation opportunities to refugees. They are also working to protect women's safety and decrease their vulnerability to sexual assault, which is an ongoing issue of particular severity in this conflict. Charity Navigator's ranking of Relief, International (four stars). A listing of other organizations that are working in Sudan right now. Save Darfur, where you can learn about local activism in your area and some of the ways in which you can speak out and act out regarding this issue. | |
