upcoming episode titles

Here's a few upcoming episode titles and also a description of episode 3.06 behind the cut:

3.06 - Ugly Berry (2008-10-30)

Competition between Betty and Kimmie (Lindsay Lohan) heats up; Ignacio gets ready to vote for the first time; Wilhelmina wants to hire a new financial officer whom Daniel detests.

3.07 - Crush'd (2008-11-06)

3.08 - Tornado Girl (2008-11-13)

Source: Here
*******************************************

Finally, the mysterious and much-awaited Connor will be making his appearance so that'll be definitely interesting. And allright, Betty and Kimmie are both working at Mode after the episode "Granny Pants" but any ideas who exactly Kimmie is working for? Daniel or Wilhelmina? I remember reading somewhere Vanessa Williams saying Kimmie starts out at Flushing Burger and ends up working for her, but this episode description makes it seem like initially Kimmie is working for Daniel. I think something about Kimmie was mentioned in the script reading for Connor's role, but I don't remember exactly what...something where Daniel was later apologizing to Betty about not believing what she had to say about Kimmie. I don't think there's any big argument between our duo, but any scene which has Daniel apologizing to Betty is a-okay with me especially if Eric continues with his soulful faces like at the end of "Filing for the Enemy". And, if I recall correctly, Daniel gives Betty some sort of gift during this scene so I think we have plenty to look forward to this episode. :)

"Crush'd" already has me intrigued. Perhaps Betty tries her charm on Jesse and is left crushed. And then Daniel, ever the man of action, crushes Jesse into a pulp for hurting his girl. ;) Wishful thinking, I know, but I can dream, can't I? This episode will hopefully be the end of Hilda's Coach saga if it hasn't ended earlier. They really seem to be dragging that storyline and I'm just not feeling it. It's pretty much the Henry mess all over again and it makes me wish the Suarez sisters would just listen to their Papi the first time around when he tells them it's not a good idea.

What do you guys think?

Post Episode Discussion "Crimes of Fashion"

An accident leaves the Modies stunned, and Betty tries to piece together what really happened when a police detective (guest star Mark Consuelos) comes looking for some answers. Meanwhile, Ignacio learns something shocking about Hilda and the coach.

First off, it is SO weird not watching this with the Bonnie to my Clyde, londongirl27. She's away tonight and I miss our during show chatter immensely. londongirl27, if you're reading this I miss you! ♥ The commercials were SO long without you!

Betty: First thought of the night: Betty called Christina her best friend? What is up with that? Everyone knows Daniel is her bestie. Even Marc and Amanda can see that.

Betty's mission to clear Daniel's name was made of awesome. The fact that Betty was so sure of Daniel's innocence is what akes me love them so much. It was interesting that Betty didn't want her view of Daniel changed and almost didn't view the tape that could have cleared him. It really shows how close they've become.

Daniel: Wow, Daniel's first thoughts after getting arrested are about Daniel Jr! I love that. How he's grown! And how can people not see that?!

Do you think Daniel was hurt that Betty ratted him out or that Betty actually considered he might hurt Christina? I think it was more of the latter and this is what makes me love the Daniel/Betty relationship dynamic more and more each episode. Betty's belief in Daniel's innocence and her disappointment in considering that he might have done it is just made of awesome.

And although Daniel explained away why he didn't want anyone to find out about his little tryst with Holly, I still have this nagging thought that he really didn't want her to find out because he doesn't want Betty to know he's having sex with other women when they're so close to each other. Honestly, Daniel tells Betty everything and she knows about his other sexcapades, surely he would have told her about that? My shippery mind is settling on Daniel not telling Betty because he's embarassed about her hearing about him and other women.

And the Daniel/Betty hug when Betty finds out that Daniel didn't attempt to murder Christina? SHIPPER HEAVEN. Daniel/Betty hugs=♥ It just does.

The Suarez Family: OMG, I loved seeing Ignacio, Betty, and Hilda arguing in Spanglish. I enjoy that the writers included that element of realism. Although I don't agree with Hilda's choice, I am glad she and Ignacio reconciled.

Marc and Amanda: I love Amanda's constant requests for Det. Averaimo to handcuff her. "Seriously, I'm easy." Haha. And then she and Marc's memories of the evening? Comic gold! I thought it was hilarious that Amanda calls her credit cards late at night when the Indian call center is working because they're nicer. And her logic that if she pays them then she can't pay her rent and if she loses her home, where will the credit card send her bills? ♥ I love her stunted teenage girl logic.

How amazing was it to see Marc smack around the Wilhelmina mannequin? Doesn't Wilhelmina's mannequin look real? Like a creepy version of Wilhelmina? Was that one of those real dolls? Was that Vanessa Williams playing the mannequin? *I am totally serious, I need to know*

Wilhelmina: I loved the homage to Terms of Endearment with Wili seeking some water for Christina. And in the end, I was happy to see Wilhelmina close the curtains and let go of the photo op.

Alexis: I want to like Alexis SO much and when they reveal her insecurities and crazy little behaviors, I kinda do. But then she let Daniel go to jail for her crime and I hate her for that. And then she told Claire that she's Daniel Junior's father and hasn't told him? She's going to make Claire tell him? *sigh* Writers, please make me like Alexis before Rebecca Romijn leaves.

But you know what? DJ looks more like Rebecca than Eric, right? That scene in the elevator as the police lead Alexis away and they focus on her face made me suddenly realize how much DJ looks like Alexis.

Claire: Claire wins for line of the night, right? "Do your own time and don't trust the po-po" totally made me crack up. But didn't she say what we already knew? Claire would never let her children take the blame for her. How could I ever doubt her? ♥ Claire.

Christina: Poor Christina! The thought that your own lover could do something so horrible to you must have been tearing her up. In the end, I'm glad Christina knows the truth about Stuart. I am kinda hoping the Meade heir ends up to be Christina/Stuart's child.

Have I forgotten something? Did we ever find out what was wrong with Stuart? 'Cause seriously, I don't remember.

Do we ever find out if Betty gets the $100,000? I know she didn't, but still . . .

Overall, this was an amazing episode and I loved it. This season just keeps getting better and better.

PREVIEWS: Gio is back! And he hates Betty! Ooooh, this is interesting! How did this happen? A simple breakup shouldn't make him that crazy. And when will Claire reveal all to Daniel?!

What were your thoughts?
Here's a heads-up to everyone that new spoiler pics for the 11/6/08 episode are up on ABC Medianet:

http://www.abcmedianet.com/web/showpage/showpage.aspx?type=asset&typecode=ph&global_id=ph18261&start_date=10/9/2008&end_date=

Looks like some kind of Halloween party, but the episode is in November ;P I really hope that they come out with HQ versions of these soon, because it looks like Daniel is with Betty at Jesse's performance or whatever. I have to know what's up and, more importantly, if Daniel and Jesse will finally meet.

Any thoughts?

Because I'm a) bored, and b) on a shippy high after last weeks ep, I thought I would ask all you guys:

1. What was the incident on the show that made you start to ship Daniel/Betty?

and

2. What has been your favourite shippy moment on the show so far?

My answers, for anyone interested, are:

1. I liked their relationship from the first few eps but the incident that made me ship them was in Feys Sleigh Ride when Betty wants to confess to Daniel and he replies that he doesnt want to hear it if that means he loses her.

2. When I was thinking of this post I was trying to narrow it down to one moment and I really couldnt. Apart from last weeks shippy goodness, my fave moments are: In and Out - the bridge scene "When I cant sleep I'm coming right back to this spot" "Call me, I'll be here", I See Me, I.C.U. - tha hand-hold after Bradford dies *icon*, and Odor in the Court - the scene in Daniels office, where he initiates the hug.

(Some of my quotes are probably slightly off but you get the idea)

So, everyone feel free to share their fave moments. Embrace the shippiness! :O)

As mentioned previously in this post, "Ugly Betty" fans were given a chance to ask Silvio Horta questions about the show through Variety Magazine's Season Blog section. And now we have his answers! (Special thanks goes to brevity_is_wit for the heads-up! :D)

He didn't answer any juicy Season 3 spoiler-type questions, but he did answer general questions about the characters and the show - including one very specific, special question about Daniel and Betty that I'm sure you're going to enjoy. ♥

Click below to read the entire Q&A with Silvio Horta. (For purposes of our community, I bolded the D/B question/answer in blue.)

'Ugly Betty': 'We always want to surprise our audience'

Posted by Kathy Lyford

The "Ugly Betty" Q&A is ready! Silvio Horta has responded to your questions and the answers are below.

I sent him all the compliments that preceded the questions and they made him very happy. He received all of your questions and he chose the following ones to answer. (I requested that he answer at least one Gio question since so many of you seemed to be interested in that character.) In some cases, similar questions were combined.

You won't find a sweeter guy in Hollywood than Silvio Horta. He never has a bad word to say about anyone and he's very humble. His family and his culture are very important to him. He's very proud of his show and I'm sure he'd want to thank all of you for watching. (I love this picture of him from last year's Emmys with all his girls.)

And I would like to thank Silvio for his time because I know he has very little of it to spare. I'd also like to thank each of you for participating and waiting so patiently for the answers. And here we go…

**************************************
Q. How closely are the characters in Ugly Betty based on the other Betty show around the world?
— James

A. "Ugly Betty" is based on the Colombian television show, "Yo Soy Betty La Fea," which roughly translates to "I am Betty the ugly one." Of course Betty's character resembles her Colombian counterpart, but in personality she is vastly different. This comes from cultural differences, my writing choices, America Ferrera's acting choices, and so on. The shape and premise of the series is the same, but the characters, their stories, their voice, etc. are different.

Q. Do you still use the green screen process since you've moved to New York and do you find filming in the actual city takes more time than in the studio with the special effects? — Lynn

A. We may occasionally use green screen effects in episodes, but we don't use them to simulate New York anymore. Filming exterior scenes in New York, for instance, is much easier and rewarding now. The city is a pleasure to work in and with and our shots come out more beautifully than we could have ever faked in Los Angeles. Part of this is because when we had to use N.Y. in the background while filming in L.A., we still had to use actual background footage shot in N.Y., and filming the actors in front of a green screen instead of a real environment added a layer of artificialness that was difficult to overcome. Now that we can film the actors in the actual N.Y. environments in which the show is set, the payoff is exponentially satisfying.

Sal and MJ are both curious about the writing process. Their questions were combined here:
Q. Do you plan the entire season or does it evolve based on audience reaction and ratings? How does the writing team work together? How many rewrites are involved? When you see an episode of "Ugly Betty," is it what you envisioned when you were writing the script? Or are there changes made which deviate from the script that annoy you?

A. One of the rewarding aspects of my job is that it does not end with the script alone. I oversee the filming of the episodes, as well as how they're edited, the casting of episodes, and so on. Even with my supervision, though, there are changes from the written script to what finally ends up on screen. Sometimes these changes result from weather, or sometimes an actor's illness, or unforeseen location variables, budget, episode length, etc. One factor that does not affect the writing or filming of the show is audience ratings and reactions, however. In part, because we plan entire seasons before they are written, but more importantly, because that's not how good entertainment is made — audiences are always going to like some things and dislike others. If everyone was OK with everything in a show all the time, I imagine that would be a pretty dull show. I think the stories we tell are fun and original and maybe they don't rub everyone the right way.

Q. What did Daniel give Betty for her birthday in "24 Candles?" Kind of random, but we didn't get to see her open it and I'm curious. — Cali

A. I was disappointed we didn't get to show this scene because it turned out to be such a great moment. We had to cut it due to time — the show was too long. After an excruciating day at work, which happened to be her birthday, Betty unwinds with Ignacio, who remembers to give Betty a gift from Daniel—he dropped it off a couple of weeks ago because, "He just wanted to make sure he didn't forget." Betty opens the gift to find a Shakespeare anthology. Inside there's an inscription: "Looks like you share a birthday with another great writer… Happy Birthday, Betty. Love, Daniel." The gift worked on many levels because Betty was writing an article for Mode at the time and it showed how much Daniel really cares about her. But we simply didn't have the time in the episode to keep the scene.

Q. Did you expect Freddy Rodriguez to have such chemistry with America Ferrera, and did the relationship grow as a result? Or was their relationship always the plan? — Kay

A. I've always known Freddy Rodriguez to be an outstanding actor, but even so, I never expected the chemistry that he brought — it was simply incredible. Obviously, we saw this chemistry immediately and that did affect certain details of Betty and Gio's relationship. In other words, we utilized the chemistry America and Freddy brought to the show by writing scenes with that same chemistry in mind.

Q. So far, the show has had many special guest star appearances — everyone from Bow-Wow to Victoria Beckham. Is there any celebrity that hasn't appeared yet whom you dream of having on the show?
— MJ and Jo

A. I've always dreamed of having Meryl Streep play a villainous counterpart to Vanessa Williams' brilliant portrayal of Wilhelmina. I have a hunch that these two actors would work magnificently together in these roles.

Q. It's been said that Betty's wardrobe in Season 3 would be adapting to show that she's starting to pick up fashion ideas from having worked at Mode. Why go that way since she's always so worried about becoming a "Mode girl"? Or do you see her developing a fashion sense separate from her becoming a Mode girl? — Sarah

A. Betty's new wardrobe illustrates the changes Betty is making in her life — not the changes Mode is making in Betty's life. That is to say, Betty is evolving — she's growing up according to her own ideals, but she's changing nevertheless. Betty has strong morals and a strong character, thus her evolution is not a compromise. It represents her own personal growth as a person.

Q. When writing some of the great witty, sarcastic, (and sometimes mean) comments typical of Marc, Amanda, and Wilhelmina, how do you and the staff decide where to "draw the line" between humor, good taste, and political correctness. I personally love that Ugly Betty pushes the envelope! — Anne

A. Knowing the line between good humor and bad taste is part of being a responsible writer. Marc and Amanda are hysterical together — as actors, (Becki Newton and Michael Urie) have a wonderful energy and it's really fun writing for them. It's sometimes a challenge, though, because we always want to surprise our audience and make them laugh. Part of that formula requires that their stories and dialogue feel new and surprising every time we see them. Basically, we write what we think and hope their characters would say and try to push it a little more each time. And then we reread it and consider whether or not the material is pushing the envelope too far. It's a delicate balance.

Q. I'm not sure why Jesse's character is being thrown in to the mix when you released statements saying that it was time for Betty to focus on her career and not her love life… Just a little confused.— Junamrsgrl

A. Just like real life, an individual's decisions don't necessarily affect the way other forces or people may come in and out of his or her life. Betty is focusing on her career more than ever. But that isn't to say there won't be obstacles, diversions or romantic entanglements along the way.

Q. Do you like the character Gio? Do you think he had a positive or negative influence on Betty?— Sal

A. I love the character of Gio. Freddy Rodriguez brought more to the table than we could have ever expected. His chemistry with America was remarkable and palpable — Gio's personality, his energy and character, had Betty questioning many of her ideals, and that was important to us in writing the show.

Meghan, Bonnie and Marissa's Daniel/Daniel Jr. questions have been combined here:
Q. Can you give us any hints about what will happen with the Daniel/Daniel Jr. storyline? How does the Daniel Jr. story affect Daniel? Will this help him to grow up in different areas of his life? And if so, will this help him to grow more in his career as well?

A. Daniel Jr. definitely signifies a big change in Daniel's life: a child is clearly a lot of responsibility and Daniel understands that. The process whereby Daniel realizes just how much responsibility raising a child is, however, reveals that Daniel Jr. not only affects Daniel's personal life, it affects his career, as well as the type of person he is, and the type of person he wants to become.

And the winners of the DVD sets are … drum roll … Sarah with her question about Betty's wardrobe and Cali with her nifty question about Betty's birthday gift that we never got to see. Congrats girls! I will contact you via email to get your addresses.

Source: Here
**************************************

Interesting stuff, yes? That was so sweet and thoughtful of Daniel to give that to Betty. (And with such a lovely note, too...*sigh*) I agree with Silvio - it's a pity that we didn't get to see her open the gift. :( Still, if anything, I'm glad that he acknowledged once again just how much Daniel cares about her. Yay! ♥

Any thoughts? :)

E! Online: Kristin's Latest Spoiler Info for "Ugly Betty" (October 6, 2008)

Kristin from E! Online just released her latest spoiler info for "Ugly Betty".

Click below to read more:

*****************************************************
Shellie in Atlanta: I can't believe Cristina got pushed down the stairs on Ugly Betty! Is the baby OK?

Yes, the baby will be fine, other than the fact that its mom is Wilhelmina. Christina won't be the only person who goes down those stairs though. It looks like Wilhelmina, Betty, Marc and Amanda will take a spill as well. People should really be more careful!

Joanne in Maine: More Mode—err, Ugly Betty please!

A fall down the stairs isn't the only bad thing heading Cristina's way. We've seen how her husband is digging into drugs again, but he actually has good reason.

Source: Here

*****************************************************
Oh, so the baby is okay? That's amazing, considering Christina really fell hard! O_O However, I guess we should expect that the writers won't let the baby go that easily, especially since it's a major plot point for Wili.

LOL at the fact that Betty, Marc, and Amanda will fall down the stairs, as well. I can totally see that being more hilarious than scary. XD

So, Stuart is definitely hiding a secret, but it's not sinister? Well, that really does take him down a couple of notches on the suspect list. But oh my - if it's bad for Christina, then that might mean one thing: Perhaps he needs the drugs because he really is dying. :(

Any thoughts?

Fanfic: "Champagne Wishes and Betty Dreams" (Chapter 2)

Title: Champagne Wishes and Betty Dreams

Pairing: Daniel/Betty

Rating: PG

Summary: After the incident with Renee, Daniel closes himself off to everyone - including Betty.

Timeline: AU; Takes place sometime after the Season 2 episode "Burning Questions", but before "Betty's Baby Bump".

Disclaimer: I'm sorry to say that I neither own the show nor any of its characters. (But in this fic, the doctor is my creation.)

Author's Note: First off, thank you very much to those who read and reviewed my last chapter! Your words have been very inspirational, and I'm very grateful for the kind feedback. ♥

So, here's the second chapter. I hope you all enjoy it! Again, thanks so much for your support. :)

Previous Chapter Links:

Chapter 1: Doctor's Orders

Chapter 2: One Step Forward, One Push Back

It’s 6:30. 6:30! God…

“Come on, Daniel.” Betty tapped her pen impatiently. “Where are you? Pick up!”

For the fifth time within the past hour, she was ringing Daniel’s cellphone, only to find that it was still turned off.

And that worried her. In fact, everything about Daniel’s recent behavior worried her.

Over the past week, he had shut down and fallen back into some old bad habits. Granted, he still managed to show up at work, but mentally, his mind was elsewhere – and it showed in everything, from his unkempt clothes to the puffy circles under his tired eyes.

And it most certainly didn’t relieve Betty’s mind that he randomly disappeared from time to time either.

She definitely wanted to do more to reach out, but with their current busy schedule, it was becoming increasingly difficult to catch Daniel on the move. Of course, it definitely didn’t help matters that Daniel was being distant with everyone – especially with her. Ever since his breakup with Renee, Betty couldn’t help but notice that he was behaving strangely – perhaps even a little more formal than usual.

After reaching his voicemail for the sixth time, Betty hung up the phone and stared thoughtfully at Daniel’s desk through the glass wall. As confused as she was by the entire situation, she felt absolutely sure about one thing: She wanted things to go back to the way they were – with Daniel acting happy and normal again.

Just as her mind began to zone out, the phone rang, startling Betty from her thoughts.

“Daniel Meade’s office, Betty Suarez speaking…Oh, hi Christina.”

With the receiver in one ear, Betty picked up her purse and began shuffling inside for her cellphone.

“I thought you might be Daniel. He hasn’t been back in the office for over an hour and a half, and I’ve called his cellphone about fifty times already…Yeah, okay – maybe not fifty. But it felt like fifty…No, no he isn’t picking up. Each time, it’s gone straight to voicemail…Wait, can you hold on for a second? I can’t find my stupid cellphone!”

Pausing, Betty flipped her bag upside down and sighed with relief as her cellphone dropped onto her desk with a soft thud.

“Okay, I found it. I’m thinking that maybe he called or left a text, so I’m checking right now…Nope, nothing.” Betty twitched her lips in disappointment. “I have no idea where he is, and he has a business dinner at 7:30…Well, he said he was going to take a walk to clear his head, but for this long – and with his phone turned off? I’m really worried. I mean, this is really unusual behavior for him…What?…Christina?! Don’t say that! Of course, Daniel wouldn’t do something that crazy…No…No, because I know him...Yes, I’m sure…Uh, what about Renee?…I know they were living together, but I don’t get…What?!…Eww, no! And I can’t believe you said that.” Hearing her friend’s suggestion, Betty shook her head against the phone and grimaced. “Christina, mental instability isn’t a sexually transmitted disease, so I seriously doubt that Daniel has it!”

Pausing, Betty noticed a few pairs of eyes had shot curiously in her direction, causing her to blush deeply.

“Okay, you know what? Let’s just change the subject,” she replied more quietly as she swiveled her chair in the opposite direction, away from the prying eyes of office gossipers. “I think I’m going to stay around here for a while since I have some work to finish up. Maybe I can get a lot more done, and well…” Nodding into the phone, Betty picked up the items that she had dumped onto her desk and replaced them into her purse. “Hmm…yeah, that’s what I’m hoping for, too. I mean, he can’t act this way forever - I think. At least, I hope not.”

Just as she had spoken those words, Daniel appeared at the end of the corridor.

“Oh! Christina, can I call you later?” Betty replied hurriedly as the tired-looking editor-in-chief slowly made his way towards his office door. “Yes, he just showed up. Alright…bye!”

Standing up swiftly, Betty rounded her desk and followed Daniel into his office without saying a word. Patiently, she waited and watched as he sifted through some items on his desk, hoping all along that he would eventually look up and give some kind of explanation of his whereabouts for the past hour or so. However, after several seconds passed without any communication from his side, Betty’s impatience started to eat at her nerves. Somebody had to start saying something – soon.

“Daniel?”

“Hmm?” Pausing momentarily, Daniel looked up as if he was seeing her for the first time. “Hey, Betty. Were there, um…any messages while I was out?”

“Yeah, there were several, actually. I put them together in that folder, just as you asked.” Betty approached and pointed towards the left side of his desk.

“Great.”

As Daniel’s attention drifted towards the folder, Betty crossed her arms against her chest. Is that all he has to say?

“Um…you do remember that you have a dinner meeting with Alexis and Douglas Hannant at 7:30, right?”

Closing the folder, Daniel looked up at his petite assistant once again. “Yes, of course. And…everything I need is here, right?” He asked, pointing to another orange folder towards the right of his desk.

“Uh-huh,” nodded Betty, biting her lip.

“Great. Then…we’re all set,” Daniel replied with a tight-lipped smile as he picked up his briefcase.

“No! We’re not!” The high-pitched sound in Betty’s voice caused Daniel to stare up in surprise. “I don’t know if you realize this, but you just disappeared for the past hour or so. What happened, Daniel?”

Putting down his case, Daniel shifted his eyes downward before allowing himself to meet Betty’s anxious gaze once again. “I said I was going for a walk, remember?”

“Yeah, you mentioned that, but…for almost two hours?”

Shrugging calmly, Daniel tried his best not to falter under Betty’s incredulous stare. “I just lost track of time.”

“So, you’ve just been walking around?”

“Yes.”

“This entire time?”

“Yeah…of course.”

Raising her eyebrows, Betty studied his face. As much as she wanted to believe Daniel, her gut instinct was telling her that something was definitely amiss with his statement – especially when she saw that peculiar, inexplicable look in his eyes.

“Uh, o-kay,” Betty continued, feeling bewildered as Daniel looked away. “Well, you should have at least left your phone on. I left you, like…I don’t know, thirty messages on your voicemail?”

Diving into his pocket, Daniel retrieved his phone and fiddled with the buttons momentarily. “Oh – you’re right. Sorry about that. I guess I turned it off.” He frowned mildly as he studied his message list. “Betty, I only see five calls from you, not thirty.”

Rolling her eyes halfway, Betty sighed in slight exasperation. “Okay, so I exaggerated. But the point is that I called you – ”

“Oh, hey! It looks like Becks left me a message, too,” Daniel interrupted, chuckling nonchalantly as his eyes remained fixated on the tiny screen of his phone. “Gosh, it’s been a while since he’s been in town. I bet he wants to meet up later to tell me about that model from – ”

“Daniel?!” Stepping forward, Betty stared anxiously at her friend. “Is that all that you’re going to say?”

Despite his attempts to remain cool, Daniel felt knots beginning to form in his stomach as Betty’s brown eyes bore into his. “What were you expecting me to say?”

“Daniel…you’ve just gone missing for over an hour and a half – with no means of communication! And this isn’t the first time that you’ve ‘disappeared’ this week, either – and without much explanation. Do you know what that does to a person like me?” She paused as Daniel’s eyes clouded over with a hint of guilt. “Is there something that…maybe you’d like to tell me?”

“What? No…no, there’s…I’m fine,” replied Daniel, shifting his weight uncomfortably. “Betty, I’m sorry, but I just wanted to get outside for some air. I turned off my cell before the staff meeting earlier, and I guess I forgot to turn it back on – that’s all. Is it really a big deal?”

“Well…just to be safe, I wish you would at least give me an idea of where you’re planning to go before you disappear,” Betty replied more calmly, noting the slight edge in her friend’s voice. “I mean, who knows what could’ve happened – ”

“Look, Betty, we’ve talked about this before. You don’t have to be my watchdog,” Daniel interjected defensively. “I mean…it was just a walk – plain and simple! And as you can see, everything’s fine, so does it really matter where I went? I’m here now, safe and sound, so please – let’s just leave things at that, okay?!”

The sharp rebuff left Betty speechless and stunned, as her mind reeled over several thoughts at once. What had she done wrong? And why was Daniel so intent on pushing her away? With each passing second, Betty felt more confused and hurt. For the past week, she had one simple objective in mind: She wanted to help Daniel out, as much as she could. But despite her best efforts, he had unexpectedly turned against her. And now, he was finally making it clear that he had no intention of opening up – not even to her. Somehow, that thought left her feeling small and unsure in his presence.

Suddenly, she felt the urgent need to bolt from the room.

“Okay, then. I guess we’re done.” Mustering her courage, Betty looked up briefly to find Daniel’s blue eyes staring intently at her. Quietly, she nodded and dropped her gaze again towards her wristwatch. “And, um – look, it’s almost 7:00, so you should get going. Oh – and, um…Alexis wanted me to remind you that she’ll be meeting you at the restaurant, so…yeah, there you go.” With both hands clutched behind her back, Betty tried not to return Daniel’s gaze as she slowly backed away towards the door. “Have a good meeting.”

As soon as Betty had turned and exited the office, Daniel felt his heart drop heavily in his chest.

“Betty – Betty, wait!” With the orange folder and his briefcase in hand, he ran out the door and followed Betty to her desk. “I’m really sorry. I honestly didn’t mean to bark at you like that.”

With her back turned to Daniel, Betty pretended to arrange a stack of folders in the corner as she swallowed slowly and tried to compose her nerves.

“It was really stupid of me to act that way,” he continued remorsefully. “I guess…I don’t know, I guess I haven’t been feeling myself lately – but that’s not an excuse for what I just did back there. I – I’m not sure why I behaved that way.”

Slowly, Betty turned to face him with a sad, questioning look in her eyes. “Well, I don’t know what’s going on either, Daniel – and that’s what concerns me. You’ve just been so – I don’t know – off lately.”

“I know.” Daniel nodded slightly, stepping closer to her. “I guess I’ve had a lot of things on my mind…and you know, I’m just trying to work around it somehow…in my own way.”

Betty’s heart filled with sympathy as she took in the lost look on Daniel’s face.

“Look, I know that things have been rough lately since you broke up with Renee, but you don’t have to deal with it alone.” A small, hesitant smile graced her lips. “There are plenty of people who want to help you, Daniel – like your sweet, trusty assistant, for instance?”

For a second, the corners of Daniel’s eyes crinkled in mild amusement at Betty’s pointed remark. In times of need, Betty always insisted on being there for him, even when he didn’t require it of her. But for the first time, Daniel felt unsure about letting her in – especially after recent events. How could he allow her to see how vulnerable and confused he really was? And would anything he said make sense? It barely made any sense to him in his head, so how would it ever make sense to her?

It probably never would – or so, he thought.

Of course, Dr. Avery meant well in advising him to express himself, but he only knew half the story – or much less than that. Daniel was sure that if the doctor knew more, he probably wouldn’t have allowed him to make a buffoon of himself twice in two weeks. For the young editor-in-chief, sticking his foot in his mouth had reached epidemic proportions of late. And he certainly didn’t want to place himself in another potentially embarrassing situation – especially with the one friend who was standing in front of him.

Who knows – maybe if I just wait a while, all of this emotional garbage will die out.

But, then again…what if it doesn’t?

“Daniel?”

“Hmm?” Realizing that he had zoned out, Daniel looked down and found Betty’s brown eyes studying him curiously. “Oh – sorry…I was, um, thinking about that meeting tonight, actually. I probably should get going.”

“Oh. You’re right,” Betty quietly sighed as she glanced at her watch. If only she could stop time long enough for them to talk a little more. “Well, um – I’m going to stick around here a little longer and finish putting these information packets together for next week.”

“Right now?” Daniel asked, seeing the large stack of orange binders on her desk. He glanced up briefly as a few homebound employees passed them by, briefcases and bags in hand. “But Betty, it’s Friday night. This can definitely wait until Monday.”

“I know, but I want to get it out of the way. It’s not a big deal,” she replied dismissively, stifling a yawn in the process. “I’m almost done anyway. I just have to lay them out and do one more check and that’ll be it.”

The yawn didn’t escape Daniel’s notice, and he skeptically eyed his assistant. “Are you sure?”

“Absolutely. Besides, I don’t have any plans tonight, so I thought – why not just finish what I started?”

For a brief moment, Daniel opened his mouth to protest, until he considered the possible opportunity that the situation afforded.

“Yeah, well…” He looked around the almost empty office and surveyed the few employees who were still milling about. “Aren’t you going to do something with your family – or with Henry?”

“No, not tonight, unfortunately. Henry is taking Charlie to her lamas class, and my family already knows to expect me a little later than usual for dinner,” replied Betty, shaking her head slowly. Perceiving that there might be more to the question, her eyes shot up at Daniel. “Why? Did you need for me to stick around? Um…I know that we still have those editorial notes to go over. I mean, if you want, I can wait.”

“Oh – no no, that’s not what I meant. I was, um, actually planning on going home after the dinner meeting,” he answered quickly, his nerves buckling once again. Rubbing softly at the back of his neck, Daniel wanted to kick himself, but he fought the urge and softly sighed instead. “Look, Betty, maybe you should just go home and take it easy, too.”

“Daniel, this is not a problem for me – really,” replied Betty with the utmost sincerity. “And I’ll go home – as soon as I’m done here. I really want to finish this tonight…if that’s okay.”

Although Daniel glanced away, Betty could see the look of hesitation and doubt in his blue eyes – a look that seemed to reappear every so often within the past week. Strangely enough, Betty couldn’t help but notice that it seemed to crop up more noticeably when he was conversing with her than with anyone else. If only she could figure out what it all meant – if it, indeed, meant anything at all…

“Alright, Betty.”

Her train of thought broke as she looked up and found Daniel eyeing the stack of binders on her desk.

“It’s not a problem. You can continue working on these, if you want.” Looking over his shoulder, he gestured with his head towards his office. “And if you need more room, you can get comfortable and lay everything out in my office – or, um, the conference room…or whichever works for you.”

Betty beamed brightly at her boss’ thoughtful suggestion. “Really? So, you won’t mind if I kick off my shoes and sit on your couch while I do this?”

“No, of course not,” he replied with a lop-sided grin.

Happily clasping her hands together, Betty drew forward and gave her friend a brief hug. “Thanks, Daniel! This really makes it so much easier to concentrate.” Putting one hand down on her desk, she proceeded to slip off her shoes as Daniel’s hand hovered protectively near her arm, in an attempt to keep her on balance. As Betty bent down for her shoe, she suddenly caught sight of the time on her computer monitor. “Oh, hey – the meeting! Um…I guess you should get going, or else you’ll be late.”

“What time is it?” Straightening up, Daniel pulled back his coat sleeve and glanced at his watch, which now read 7:10 p.m.. “Yeah, I’m cutting it close.” He paused tentatively. “So…you’re sure you’ll be alright here?”

“I’ll be fine,” she emphasized, raising her eyebrows at him. “I’ll finish up and be out of here in no time – no worries. In the meantime, I have that couch to keep me company,” Betty added cheerfully, as she grabbed a stack of orange binders from her desk and started towards his office door.

“Okay,” Daniel nodded thoughtfully at his diminutive assistant as she paused midway to his office door and stood in front of him. “ Well…have a good weekend then, Betty.”

“You, too.”

With that, he turned and made his way down the corridor, away from where Betty still stood, watching.

“Daniel?”

“Yeah?” He called back, turning once more.

“Good luck with that meeting…and take care of yourself,” she nodded, pausing carefully as she considered her next words. “And…I just want you to know – if you ever want to talk, I’m here.”

“Thanks, Betty,” replied Daniel softly, noting the concern in her voice.

With those parting words, Betty smiled gently at him and disappeared from sight, leaving Daniel to painfully wonder why he was alienating the only friend who truly cared.

FF.net link: "Champagne Wishes and Betty Dreams"

ABC just released the latest spoiler clips for Episode 3.03, "Crimes of Fashion", which airs in the US next Thursday, October 9, 2008.

The first clip involves Hilda, Coach Diaz, and Ignacio, and the second (surprising) clip shows Daniel, Betty, and special guest star Mark Consuelos as Detective Averaimo.

Click below to see both:

Spoiler Clip #1: Hilda, Coach Diaz, and Ignacio

<lj-embed id="291" />

Direct Link: Episode 3.03 - Spoiler Clip #1 (Hilda, Coach Diaz, and Ignacio)

Spoiler Clip #2: Daniel, Betty, and Detective Averaimo

<lj-embed id="292" />
Direct Link: Episode 3.03 - Spoiler Clip #2 (Daniel, Betty, and Detective Averaimo)

*******************************************************************

OMG - so Daniel does get arrested? O_O Oh, I know he couldn't have done this. I seriously think Alexis is behind this - especially considering the shoe evidence. (Unless Stuart wore his shoes, but yeah - I'm not buying that right now. Alexis still has large "man" feet, so you know...)

But wow - Daniel asked Betty to lie? o_O I wonder where he really was - and why didn't he tell Betty? But oh, Betty - why would you be so honest and tell the cops everything? *smacks head* She really is more naive this season, isn't she?

In any case, I'm pretty sure Betty will be pumped up to prove that Daniel didn't do it. This should be good!

Thoughts?

"Filing for the Enemy"-Post Episode Discussion

"Filing for the Enemy" (Episode 3.02) - Wilhelmina, prepping her first issue of the magazine as editor, tries to lure Betty over to the dark side by offering her a job at Mode as her assistant. Meanwhile, Daniel discovers he faces a custody battle if he wants to keep Daniel Jr. (guest star Julian de la Celle) in the U.S., Hilda's illicit romance with Coach Diaz (guest star Eddie Cibrian) heats up, and Christina grows suspicious of Stuart's (guest star Derek Riddell) true motives.

People, I just came home from the denist. My mouth hurts. So be forewarned that I may be grumpy tonight.

Betty: "Look at me when I'm yelling at you. Don't look at me!" ♥ Betty was on her game tonight. I honestly think tonight's episode was better than the season premiere. My favorite part of tonight's episode was Betty's nightmare about becoming Wilhelmina. Daniel coming to Betty-mina and begging her for something? That's the stuff dreams are made of, my dears. I found it interesting the speech Betty gave Daniel once she found all the letters Wilhelmina had hidden from Daniel and Alexis. You know the part, "Anything you want is worth fighting for." Can this come back in another season when Daniel wants Betty? I want that line to be played in some awesome Daniel/Betty love montage along with the "You're better than any model" line. And I love that Betty is an independent entity from Daniel and was willing to work at Mode without him if it meant futhering her career. I think this is important because now we know Betty isn't happy just being Daniel's assistant and will eventually cut cord and move up. And tonight also showed us Daniel loves Betty selflessly enough to let her go. I love that aspect of their relationship. I also love that they are never afraid to approach the other and say, "I messed up. I'm sorry. Can you forgive me?" and they always do.

Daniel: I was amazed by Daniel this episode for reasons that were stated above. I was also happy to see ambitious Daniel (as was londongirl27 ) working on the Mode book and ignoring the hot girl fashion shoot. I believe londongirl27's exact words were, "I love ambitious Daniel." I have to agree. What I liked best about Daniel in tonight's episode was that he wanted what was best for the people in his life that he loves. He was willing to let go of Betty to make her happy and he was going to do the same for Daniel Junior. Try to tell me Daniel having a child isn't bringing Daniel and Betty closer as friends or that it isn't maturing him.

Hilda: Wow. I am hoping next week's episode brings Hilda a new phone number and that she never speaks of Coach Diaz again. I hate that Hilda is getting hurt, but as londongirl27 said, she went into this with both eyes open. So has no one to blame but herself. I hope that this doesn't make it hard for her to find love in the future.

Claire Once again, Claire is just made of awesome. I love the Claire/Betty exchange at the party tonight. Could it be any more obvious that Claire is meant to be Betty's mother-in-law? She loves Betty like she's her own and I like that best about her. Now all we need is for her and Ignacio to fall madly in love and all my UB wishes can come true.

Wilhelmina: It was interesting to see Wilhelmina's reaction to having Betty as her assistant. Seeing the incredible luck you have when Betty is on your side, must have impressed her. And I have got to hand it to her, she is an evil genius. Keeping Betty busy as her assistant and cause a rift between she and Daniel was incredibly smart. But londongirl27 and I were wondering: if she was Ugly Wanda, how did she seduce the tiara out of the museum's hands? And do you think she's evil enough to push Christina down the stairs just to get back at the Meades by implicating one of them in the crime?

Marc/Amanda: Does Wilhelmina deserve him as her assistant or what? Hands up who can't wait to call someone a "Sorceress"? I know I can't. And I don't care if it's a man or woman. Although Amanda's schtick can get old sometimes, I did enjoy seeing her steal Coach Diaz's phone. She's so crafty!

Christina/Stuart: londongirl27 and I knew it! We always suspected there was something fishy about his story. Do you think he was angry enough at Christina to have pushed her down the stairs? Poor Christina. She decided to have this child to help Stuart and now it turns out it was all a lie. This would have really hurt her anyway, but the miscarriage is going to be brutal. I know Ashley Jensen will knock it out of the park.

PREVIEW: I loved that 70s sort of editing and look to the preview. It kinda goes with the Life on Mars promotion they've been doing. So the real question is this: who did it? Stuart? Alexis? Maybe Claire. She already killed Fey. I couldn't see Daniel doing it. Wilhelmina? Hmmm.

And off topic, but on topic: Was anyone else reminded of a Robert Palmer video when you saw Penelope Del Rios and those identically dressed scantily clad women?

Those are my thoughts. What were yours?

Now at this very moment he gazed into Her big brown eyes and wrapped His arms around her body,he smirked a little as he said "Do you think Your Dad and Sister will care if I steal you away for a little while?"

Betty shrugged as she Kissed him back,His skin smelling of the combination of cologne and aftershave not to mention the Products in his hair, the smell Being simply Daniel that made her weak in the Knees "I dont care if they do or not I want to be with you" she Found a note pad on the lawn chair and scrawled a note telling them she would be leaving and held Daniel's hand as he lead her into the town car.

It was a few hours later When Hilda found the note,She should have seen it After all she knew Years ago they'd fall in love but for Betty to so selfishly Ditch her family For him was unforgiveable in her mind and she was going to discuss the matter with thier Father, she took a breath and ran inside all the while screaming "Papi!!!"

"Now her Daddies in the Kitchen staring out the Window Scratching and wracking his brains how could 18 years just up and walk away,My Little Pony Tailed girl Growed up to be A Woman now she's gone in the blink of an eye She Left the Suds in the Bucket and the clothes hanging out on the line"

Hilda didnt really have to look Far After all Ignacio Suarez stood in the Kitchen watching the scene unfold,He smiled as he watched the two of them together,He always Liked Daniel and felt as though he were Family From day one,However it hurt him that Betty would just leave without saying goodbye first,he sighed realizing that Daniel wasnt really to blame in actuality it was Betty's new found indepence But the thought still hurt him,he had felt as if he was losing his baby girl and there was No going back now.

"now dont you wonder what the preachers gonna preach about sunday Morn, nothing quite like this has happened here before, Well he must have been a looker a smooth talking Son of A gun for such a grounded girl to Just up and Run,course you cant fence time and you cant stop love"

Hilda had frowned when she was drug into the church by her Father, they had gone to Church every Sunday but this day was different, this day had been without Betty

she had frowned when an Old friend came and asked her father where exactly Betty had gone,What could you really say ,she sighed after all the Truth was out of the question "oh she'd rather spend time with her New boyfriend You know Womanizer Daniel Meade" she scoffed at the thought ,then sighed Perhaps Betty had been right Perhaps Daniel did change ,perhaps she herself was Just being overprotective of her little Sister,of course she knew she had every right to be Since thier mother had died she felt as though she had somehow become Betty's Mother and now she was losing her.

"Now all the Biddies in the beauty shop gossiping going nonstop sipping on Pink Lemonade how could 18 years just up and walk away, Our little pony tailed girl growed up to be a woman now she's gone in the blink of an eye She left the suds in the Bucket and the clothes hanging out on the line"

As Hilda was Doing her Hair Gina flipped through her latest issue of Mode an eyebrow raised "So I heard an interesting bit of information..." she didnt wait for Hilda to react instead she continued with her words "...Your Sister is dating Daniel Meade and Rumor has it he's whisking her away so they can get Married"

Hilda bit her lip as she Said "Not true" she bit her lip and shrugged "well PART of its true they are dating but he's smart enough to know Not to elope with her"

Gina scoffed as she shrugged and smirked pointing to the page she was looking for "Oh no" she adds "thats not what this says"

Hilda frowned and said "amanda's not very reliable How they let her write an article is Beyond me and I think I'd Know if my Sister was running off to get married, she'd tell me first"

Gina smirked and added "sure believe what you want to believe"
Hilda slapped her and said "Watch it Gina or I'll Cut ALL of your Hair off"
"she's got her pretty little barefeet Hanging out the window and their Heading off to Vegas tonight, How could 18 years just up and Walk away Our Little Pony Tailed girl growed up to be a woman now she's gone in the blink of an eye She left the Suds in the Bucket and the Clothes hanging out on the line,She left the Suds in the Bucket and the clothes hanging out on the line"

Betty Grinned when she realized where Daniel was taking her,She stepped out of the town car and stared through the new York skyline across to Manhattan, she smiled as she stared at him happily "You remembered?" she said with a contented sigh

He grinned back at her taking her hand and massaging it with his own "of course I remembered How could I forget, thats the Night I fell in love with you" He admitted

Betty Looked at him in shock it was a confession she didnt think she'd get "But I..." she began only to have Daniels finger put in front of her lips

He gazed into her eyes and suddenly got down on one knee "Sssh , Please let me do this before I lose my nerve" he's visibly nervous but continues to speak as he takes her hand "I love you,I've probably always Loved you ,there isnt a moment of any day when I dont want to be with you, you've changed my life on so many levels,You've made it better So Betty would you do me the honor of becoming My Wife" Tears welled from her eyes as He pulled out the princess Cut ring from His pocket, she nodded her head and wiped a tear as she said emphatically "Yes,Yes,yes I'll Marry you" He lifts her up and kisses her with Passion,it was the Perfect Night in his eyes and he knew it would only get better from there.
"She was in the Backyard say it was a little Past Nine when her Prince pulled up a white pick up truck ,Plenty old enough and you cant stop Love and you cant fence time and You cant stop Love"

Many Years Later

Young Alexis Meade grinned as she saw her boyfriend drive up to her Front door, her Light Brown Hair swaying in the Wind as she ran to him,Her bright blue eyes twinkling

there was nothing or no one that would stop her from being With him.

Betty and Daniel sighed happily as they watched thier Daughter, soon she'd be old enough to leave home but somehow that didnt matter, it was just another obstacle they'd both have to Cross together,Betty smiled as she Kissed Daniel her heart still rushing after all these years as he kissed her back.

Spoilers: Ask Ausiello

Ausiello answered another few questions about the show this week. Nothing major, but several interesting bits- and stuff we'll probably be happy to see!

Question: Ugly Betty question for you: Will Daniel ever be editor in chief of Mode again? -- Jason
Ausiello: I think there's a really good chance he'll officially reclaim his perch atop Mode's masthead by episode 3.

Question: What happened to Marc and Cliff on Ugly Betty? Did they break up and no one told me? -- Todd
Ausiello: Nope, they're still together. They have one of those special TV relationships that take place primarily off screen (see also: Chase and Cameron on House). But as David Blue (Cliff) told me at Ugly Betty's New York premiere a few weeks back, the MIA couple will get some long overdue face time very soon.

Question: Ugly Betty spoilers! -- Eddie
Ausiello: I'm getting word that Mode is hosting a company-wide, off-site retreat in November that has "Emmy bait" written all over it.

By episode 3, huh? So what happens this Thursday? Maybe that bit from the promo between Daniel and Betty is a set-up, because otherwise things are going to have to turn around really quickly. Of course, getting to see more of Marc and Cliff together is always good, though we don't know if all the scenes will be happy... As for this retreat, I'm intrigued. Emmy bait? I want to know what he means by that.

ABC just released a new spoiler clip for Episode 3.02, "Filing for the Enemy", which airs in the US on Thursday, October 2, 2008.

Click below to see the clip, which features both Wilhelmina and Betty:

<lj-embed id="283" />

Direct Link: Episode 3.02, "Filing for the Enemy" (Spoiler Clip) - Airing October 2, 2008

**************************************************
Oh, boy. Since this looks like a private meeting between the both of them, I'm sure Daniel will be pissed off when he's the last to find out. Maybe that's why he and Betty fight... :\

Thoughts?

Fan Fiction: The One That's Made You - Repost

So I am trying this again. It appears that last time, livejournal ate it. I want to give a bit of a shout out and incredibly grateful to my two little reviewers who saw it before it disappeared. no2benry and goeungurl I can't thank you enough for the kind words.

Title: The One That's Made You

Pairing: Daniel/Betty

Rating: PG (Possibly less, I don't think much more than)

Summary: Sometimes it takes the realization that you are losing something to make you realize it's what you've always wanted.

Timeline: This is a future fic, in a bit of a universe of my own creation. It doesn't really spoil for much of anything outside of the basic character traits you learn in Season 1.

Disclaimer: None of this is mine. If it were...Daniel and Betty would have a lot more screen time together.

Author's Note: This is a first for me. For one, I haven't written fanfiction in a really long time. For two, I've been longing to write for this fandom but I've been insanely nervous about finding their voices. Therefore this story is slightly told in parts, trying to give me a chance to both learn voices, and to show the story from multiple sides. Please give me feedback either way.

He can hear her long before he sees her. Hurried footsteps followed by a loud crash which is then accompanied by a harried apology, all end with Betty Suarez standing before him. Time hasn’t changed her much. The braces are gone now, her hair is a little less crazy, and working so close to the fashion world has taught her to wear things to flatter her shape a bit more. The colors are still insane, a mismatch that on a lesser woman would just resemble a clown ensemble. She’s grown up, she moves with a confidence to match her wit. But she’s still a klutz, and when she’s excited she’ll run through anything in her path, talking a mile a minute. And even though she hasn’t worked for him in years, his office is still the first place she ends up. He wouldn’t have it any other way. Though he might mind more if he realized just exactly what it was she was about to tell him.

“Daniel,” she chokes out still trying to catch her breath. He says nothing, just smiles and motions for her to take a seat. “Thanks,” she gets out now with a smile to match his, breathing finally under control.

“Not a problem, Betty.” His amusement is still evident in his tone but he tries to push it back for her sake, though he knows she’s already more than aware. “So, what’s up?” He leans back in his chair, hands coming up to support the back of his head as he watches her.

Her face, if possible, breaks into an even wider grin. “I know you think my relationship with Kyle is moving too quickly. And I know the two of you don’t really get along. But I also know that you’re my friend and want only the best of things for me, and I really need to talk to someone and as my best friend this becomes your job.” She barely takes a breath before continuing on. “So promise me you’ll try to just be happy for me and give me comforting advice, because he asked me to marry him, and I’ve said yes.”

It takes him a moment to realize she’s waiting for him to react; but it’s short enough that when he finally speaks she doesn’t seem to notice. “That’s wonderful, Betty. I’m happy for you.” She’s up almost before Daniel makes it out of his chair, her arms tight around his waist, her head still not quite reaching his shoulder. And just like that he’s engulfed in a flood of Betty, fluorescent fabric, and the realization that he’s actually not happy about this at all and isn’t entirely sure why.

“Well, of course, you’re not happy about it.” Alexis says with a frustrated sigh as she rifles through the filing cabinet beside her desk.

“But I don’t know why I’m not happy about it,” Daniel whines, oblivious to his sister’s annoyance. “I should be happy for her. I’ve never seen her so excited. She was almost twitching with joy. And I want this for her. I want her to get her fairy tale ending. And for once the guy doesn’t have a pregnant ex, control issues, or really horrible taste in music.”

Alexis slams a pile of folders down on her desk, her full attention now on her little brother. “This also means she won’t be at your beck and call. She won’t come out in the middle of the night when you need a chaperone. You won’t be the first one she calls with every mundane little detail of her everyday life. And you will no longer be the center of her little world. You’re jealous. Suck it up, Danny.”

Daniel gives out a choked laugh. “Jealous? That’s ridiculous. I’m not attracted to Betty.”

Alexis rolls her eyes. “I'm not saying you're attracted to Betty. I'm saying you're jealous of someone else hijacking her time. So you doubt your role in her life. Now Daniel, I know these things cannot be that complicated for you to sort out and I’m in the middle of something important so could we powwow about your former secretary later?”

"I just was saying that I wasn't attracted. It doesn't mean I missed the point." Daniel mutters under his breath as he heads for the door.

She has a moment where she wants to stop him, because it’s rare he tries to talk to her anymore, and clearly he’s upset, but she has deadlines to meet, investors to suck up to, and a company that just never seems to be able to run itself.

Betty stands on a little pedestal of sorts, observing her image in a triad of mirrors, still not quite believing what she is doing. Trying on wedding dresses, ordering flowers, finding caterers, it still seems surreal, maybe even wrong somehow. She’s been ignoring the gnawing feeling in her gut for weeks. At first she convinced herself it was because her parents wouldn’t be there, and every dream she’d ever had about this day ended with her father leading her down the aisle. Then it was all about the awkwardness of doing it alone. Hilda just couldn’t get away from her salon, but with no small amount of pleading she had managed to get Daniel to be there every step of the way. In fact she was fairly certain he was currently curled up in a chair dozing while she tried on dress after dress. Now, she might just have to face facts. Maybe it was all just too soon. She promised herself she wouldn’t rush into love anymore, but when it’s there and reaching out to you and saying all the right things, it’s just really hard to ignore.

“I’ll just tell him that we’ll have to push back the date.” She says to her mirror image, with a curt nod. “It’s no big deal. It’s just jitters. Everyone gets them. It’s natural. He’ll understand.” She glances away from herself and down at the diamond on her finger, a bit concerned that she is speaking aloud to reaffirm things she really isn’t all that sure about anymore.

A few moments later she finds herself gently shaking Daniel’s shoulder. He blinks awake, eyesight clearly still blurry as he speaks. “Looks beautiful, Betty.” There is still a slight slur to his voice, and Betty can’t help but laugh.

“Daniel, this is what I wore here.” She shakes her head slightly offering her hand to assist as he gets up.

Ever the charmer she takes in his now slightly teasing smile. “Still beautiful.”

“And it is clearly time to get you some food. You’ve lost all sense of reason. And I don’t think even I can find it for you this time.” She ushers him out the door, and doesn’t notice that somehow in the rush, they don’t stop holding hands.

“Daniel, I love you, but if you don’t cut to the chase soon, I’m going to begin to think that you are the one who doesn’t have a life.” Claire cuts a pointed look over at her son who is currently flopped back on the couch, rambling on and on about the magazine, his new assistant, his sister’s obsession with her job, and even about her lack of a social life but still managing to say absolutely nothing about what is actually bothering him.

“Mom, it’s just not that simple.” It’s the first statement resembling a bit of truth that he’s muttered all night.

“If it were simple, life would be boring. And alcohol can only do so much to liven up the outside world on its own. Now, are we talking about it?” Claire’s tone is nothing if not matter-of-fact. She loves her son, more than anything else in the world, but sometimes he is nothing but an imbecile and she rarely has as much time as she would like to snap him out of it.

With a heavy sigh, Daniel sits up and looks right at her, as if he is about to reveal the weightiest of secrets. “I think I’m attracted to Betty.”

“No, son,” Claire says with a sigh of her own. “You’re in love with Betty.” As he starts to sputter in a mix of shock, and what she assumes will be an outright denial, she merely holds up her hand to quiet him. “She is one of the best things that ever happened to you. She managed to accomplish in months, what I couldn’t do in years of raising you. She helped you become a man, Daniel. I’d resent her for that if I could.”

For a moment, he says nothing, just stares down at his hands. When he finally glances back up at her, she’s almost surprised at how calm he looks. “I never realized…”

She cuts him off. “You and your sister both have a hard time realizing the things that are good for you before it’s far too late. That’s definitely something you got from your father.”

He cracks the smallest of smiles for her. “I need to go.”

Claire just nods, a small smile gracing her own lips as she watches him go. If she were one for giving sage advice, she would have needed to remind him that Betty was happy. But she was a mother, and that mess of a girl had always been the one for him.

He knows that he’s looked everywhere, but still he continues to make his driver go in circles. She’s going to be married in days; she’s nowhere to be found. She isn’t answering her phone. Everything is going straight to voicemail. As he repeats these facts to himself, suddenly he realizes that she’s hiding. And in this giant city where it’s so easy to blend into the crowd, there is only one place Betty has ever gone to hide. He gives his driver new orders, and sits back trying to figure out what to say when he gets there.

He pauses, mere feet away from her, because she’s talking and he doesn’t want to interrupt, not here. This is her time, not his. He’s starting to second guess his coming here. He almost moves back to the car, but then he actually hears her and he knows he can’t.

“I’m just so scared. It’s all so rushed, and when I mentioned postponing he just looked so sad, and I couldn’t do it. But Dad, I don’t think this is what I want. Hilda’s so far away. You’re with Mom. I just wish you could tell me if you thought I was doing the right thing.”

“I think he’d tell you that you have to do what you feel it right for you, no matter what that is.” Daniel doesn’t remember moving, but suddenly he’s only a foot or two away from her, and when she turns to look at him, he doesn’t detect surprise.

Instead she smiles sadly, and glances back at the headstone briefly, tracing her fingers over her father’s name, before finally standing, her full attention again on Daniel. “You’re right. He would.”

They fall into a comfortable silence, and begin to move toward his car. “You called me eight times.”

“Nine.” He manages to get out, trying not to sound as pathetic as she is currently painting him. She merely shakes her head.

“I’m glad you’re here.” She pauses midstride and glances over at him. “I knew the right answer; I think I just needed someone to remind me to believe in myself.”

“Well, it’s time I returned the favor.”

“Still, I want to thank you, Daniel.” She moves forward and wraps him in another hug. “Thank you for everything,” she mutters into his shoulder.

As she pulls away, he lets his hands fall lightly to her sides, keeping her slightly in place. “Betty, I need to tell you something.”

Her eyes are wide, curious, as she meets his. “What is it?”

At that moment her phone rings, and he realizes they are in a cemetery. They are in a cemetery, she’s just decided to leave her fiancé, and she is not in a place to hear how he feels yet. He shakes his head. “It looks like it’s going to rain. I’ll give you a ride home.”

                She nods. “I’d like that.”

A quick click of her phone silences it, and they both head toward the car. “Do you have any idea the best way to get nonrefundable services to give you a refund?” She begin
