I really don't like Natalie. She's completely changed Daniel. He used to really care about what was happening in Betty's life and could tell what she was thinking and feeling. So him not noticing how uncomfortable she is with Natalie, that doesn't bode well for their friendship. I did see a little flicker of recognition during lunch, but still.

And I don't know how Betty thinks she can ever be replaced in Daniel's life. That's impossible.

If I was Betty I would have slapped Daniel or told him off or something. I LOVE Detty, but this is too much. Betty has always been there for him and it's so wrong the way he is favoring Natalie. Needless to say, I can't stand Natalie. At least Molly was usually nice, but this chick is a snake.

And by the way, maybe I'm the only one, but I really miss seeing Betty as Daniel's assistant and basically the good ole days of the first couple seasons. Those seasons were special. It was tough as a fan to see Natalie erasing all of Betty's existence as the former assistant. :(

that Betty is needy and brings a lot of drama to Daniel's life that he just doesn't need.First he stood up for Betty and then we got this look from him contemplating that it might be true.also he then picked new best friend Natalie over Betty when they had an arugument.

Okay. Some thoughts.

I'll reiterate that Natalie honestly thinks she's being helpful. She's been brainwashed by this cult and now she's recruiting Daniel. One of the first things a cult does is to get its members to renounce their family and loved ones. This is to make sure that nobody can talk the new member out of whatever bull the cult is espousing. So here we have Natalie, who has clearly been immersed into this cult, and she's just doing her moral duty of "helping" Daniel find the "way."

Second, Betty loves Daniel. Whether it's platonic or romantic is not the point right now. Love is unconditional. You don't forgive a person because they deserve it. Otherwise, would your parents have ever forgiven you as a teen when you yelled "I hate you" to them for being protective? By taking the first step, Betty showed Daniel that she is still there for him, even as he's going through his crazy cult fetish. And Daniel obviously is not compeltely sold on this cult thing, or he wouldn't have been so relieved to make amends with Betty. (Not to mention that he also loves her, and you can't just shut off feelings).

I think the episode handled things realistically. It's painful, certainly, but non of the situations came off implausible, IMHO. I was also shocked at several of the twists throughout the eppy, including the Willi/Nico story and the Amanda/Matt arc. Good, if depressing, episode.

By taking the first step, Betty showed Daniel that she is still there for him, even as he's going through his crazy cult fetish.

What bothered me more about that scene is that he didn't give her a better apology. For instance, he should have at least said 'I'm sorry' to Betty for raising his voice at her. I know he kind of implied it, but saying the actual words just like she had done would have been a better gesture on his part. Think of "Filing for the Enemy" from last season, for example. Daniel's apology seemed more heartfelt in that episode, and he seemed more eager to make amends with Betty at that time. He even looked nervous and sheepish when locking eyes with Betty from across the room. What we saw in tonight's episode was a far cry from that. At the party, he looked guarded, cautious, and even a little suspicious as Betty approached him and Natalie. To me, that was enough to show that the cult was already gaining ground over Daniel's mind and heart.

Overall, I have to say that I didn't like Daniel in this episode because he appeared to be a bit more insensitive towards Betty's feelings, especially now that he had a new 'friend'/assistant at work. Cult or no cult, it's moments like this where I think Daniel is a selfish idiot in how he takes Betty's friendship for granted. Even before the blowout, he seemed to be content to have found a 'new Betty' in Natalie when he hired her, and that bugged the crap out of me.

After cassandra_elise's mature, well thought-out post, there's this:

What's the difference between Natalie and a walrus?

One has a mustache and smells like fish, the other is a walrus.

Sorry, just had to get that off my chest.

Anywho, I'm watching the full episode on abc.com tomorrow, but I'm primed and ready to give Daniel a much-deserved kick in the Meade family jewels.

I read the interview with Jamie-Lynn as well, and she must be confused because trying to poison someone against his best friend seems like pretty darn deliberate "ill will" to me. I know that she's been brain-washed by a cult like cassandra_elise said, but that still doesn't mean I can't hate her :P

And that final "apology" scene between Daniel and Betty gave me the chills. If EM is doing this deliberately, he should win and Emmy, because his eyes looked dead, like he wasn't completely focused on Betty. Like the cult's already taken him over.

My only consolation is that we'd better get a helluva good Detty make-up/friendship reaffirmation scene (or several) after this is all over. But honestly, can't the writers have Daniel just be happy for five minutes a season?!

Oh, and is Natalie's "big secret" that she's involved in a cult, or is there something else?

I can't wait to meet Claire and Cal's son...wonder if he'll become friends with Betty in some way. After this episode, I want to see Daniel jealous for a change.
betty1fan: pic#88492217[info]betty1fan on November 7th, 2009 02:47 pm (UTC)
I think Natalies big secret is Bennett is her father... When she got that phone all at the end and excused herself I thought I heard her say dad it was just one meeting! But that could of been a misunderstanding... If Natalie thinks Betty is needy than she really doesn't know Daniel as much as Daniel thinks she does....

I wanted to cry when Daniel was telling Betty to butt out and that she was being rude...He doesn't need drama in his life... Excuse me, the man is a walking stick of Drama...

My heart really went out to Betty this episode because I felt she was being rejected left and right... First Matt than Daniel... But of course Betty made the right decision to go to the party and apologize to Daniel and Natalie... Even though I would have rather seen her tell Natalie off again but I'm sure in the Level 7 episode will get to see something like that...

Cal Hartley is an ass... I was so mad at him on how he talked to Claire... I was proud of Claire at the end to find her son...

Amanda, poor, Amanda... I had a feeling Matt wasn't exclusively inviting as his date especially since he said he would see her at the party... But a part of me didn't feel too sorry for her because I feel she deserved that since she already felt guilty about hurting Betty...
Also the whole setting Betty up on a date thing bothered me because Amanda should know by now the type of men Betty likes... I mean hello... Henry, Gio, Matt.... They were all good looking guys...
I feel that was a way to make that scene comical but to me it wasn't that funny...

The Matt and Betty thing kind of bothered me in a sense because I think Betty shouldn't of assumed that just because they were being civil to one another didn't mean they were ready to reconnect...
Matt did crack me up though when he looked at her dress and made a tiger noise at her... Than said he didn't know why he did that... I was happy that Betty did say she was glad they were still friends because in the long run I want her to have Matt in life some how just not as a boyfriend... And friends I can deal with maybe be another Christina to her...

WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT??

I understand Daniel to want to replace Betty as an assistant, but to want to replace her as a friend too??WHY?

And generally his manner towards Betty was AWFUL!!He was a complete JERK to her!"I finally replaced you!", I don't want this drama right now!"Where did that came from?Is he brainwashed by stupid Natalie or something? That easily?

Just when I think that Daniel has grown up, he destroys everything! I thought I was watching Season 1 all over again!

AND WHY DID BETTY HAD TO APOLOGIZE??
I got so angry her Betty for doing it!He was the rude one!He should have done it instead! And what sucks the most is that he didn't even realise it!
I hate the writers for presenting Daniel like that!

I just wonder HOW ON EARTH CAN THIS DANIEL EVER REALIZE THAT HE HAS FEELINGS FOR BETTY?

He still seems to be an immature boy, who trust the wrong people and mistreats in the blink of an eye the only one, who truly cares for him!!!

IT'S ONE STEP FORWARD AND TEN STEPS BACK ALL THE TIME!
It's so frustrating!

Kick Natalie out
I hate her.
I hope Daniel will realize that this Community is the drama. But I think he can only turn to the nice Daniel ( we all love in zero worship and when he punshed matt for betty), when he think that he loose something really important to him again, because of the community. If Betty quitts and said to him and Natalie the truth. Maybe he undersdand and they will meet and night at the bridge ( I want to see the bridge) and go on with there friendship. Natalie and the community loose and we have a detty moment.
I will more detty. I also disliked Matt. Hilda is absollutely right about him. He is not good enough for Amanda either. I will also see something good for Mark. He deserved it.

I can't get with the Daniel hate/dislike/pissiness
He's still in mourning. When you lose people close to you - logical or not - you really are capable of all kinds of stupidity.

And as for two steps forward and ten back nature of Daniel, um, Betty does the same thing. Neither of them is the most mature but the reason they compliment each other is because typically they have different strengths. All the better for them to dig each other out of trouble. And they've both had trouble.

So no Daniel isn't looking like the hero in this ep but it's part of the drama and I think the fact that Betty is still trying is a testament to their friendship. In friendships or relationships the trick to withstanding hard times is both of you cannot fall out of love with the other or become distracted at the same time. One of you always needs to be present to pull the other in. And that person? Is going to rotate. Nature of it all.

I know I'm in the minority but I don't find the Detty friendship one-sided at all. Yes, Betty has to get Daniel out of scrapes but he's had to do the same for her. Saving her career, in fact. He's also one of her biggest champions, constantly boosting her self-esteem and defending her to others - hmm, and herself now that I think about it.

Also, I think when all is said and done this will be the opening for Daniel to get a truly fresh look at Betty. HOpefully, leading to Claire finally smacking him on the head and saying, "Do you realize who your perfect woman is yet? DOH! Betty, Daniel, it's BETTY!"

Finally got around to watching the full episode. Dark, but it was fresh and snappy and almost Season 1-worthy.

And I hate Natalie.

But I've gotta admit, I was actually expecting a little bit worse from the Detty argument scene. I still stand by what I posted before regarding Daniel being easily led--ridiculously so, at this stage of the game--but I was honestly expecting some kind of "Petra-Gate"/"Nice Day for a Posh Wedding"-level blow-out, when really, all he did was raise his voice a little to tell her he wasn't ready to deal with his mom's drama.

And although I still hate Natalie with the blazing passion of a thousand fiery suns and think her bad-mouthing Betty was a bitchy move on a number of levels, even without the cult drama, she did have a reasonable point about backing off for a little while and letting Daniel process his shock in his own way. Betty's "butt-out" remark, while admittedly satisfying to watch, wasn't really deserved in that particular scene, and it made Betty come off as a bit of a beyotch herself--sort of like the clingy drama-queen that Natalie accused her of being. We the audience know that Natalie's got a hidden agenda and has been bad-mouthing Betty behind her back, but Betty doesn't know any of that, so snapping at Natalie's pretty reasonable suggestion just ended up making Betty look, well,...petty, and demostrated to Daniel that what Natalie said was valid.

*shrugs* Just my take on it, but nobody really came out of this episode smelling like roses :P

I agree. Betty's timing wasn't the best. She was already in a very sensitive place on this issue, so we all knew she might explode unexpectedly given the wrong 'rub'. I wish she would have waited until she had some privacy with Daniel before voicing her thoughts on Natalie. If she had, then maybe they could have had a more constructive discussion about the whole situation.

But yeah - I still take Betty's side on all of this, of course. Her angry impulses may have gotten the better of her, but at the same time, she spoke frankly to Daniel about her concerns like any good friend would. Bad timing on her part, but now he can't say she never warned him.

P.S. Why is it that Daniel quickly noticed Natalie's 'makeover', but has yet to comment on Betty's new look? That actually annoys me. Honestly, there's still a lot about Daniel's behavior in this episode that bothers me. I know people are saying that Daniel is in a vulnerable, mournful state, but I'm sorry...does that really excuse some of the things Daniel said nonchalantly to Betty or about Betty? Argh! I'm going to wait and hope that Daniel apologizes profusely to Betty in 4.07, because I still think she deserved much more than she got from him in this episode.

Natalie needs to go
yea, that sums it up. Honestly, I could not stand looking at her AT ALL in this episode. Usually I don't hate characters in this show. People like Matt, Nico, Hartley...they just annoyed me (except Matt's ok now). They would range from different levels of irritation but not hate. This character, I loathed. I could see why Daniel was angry for Betty's comment, but Natalie trying to pull him away from Betty's good advice was awful. Her eagerness to delete any trace of Betty from his life and the way she reacted to Betty's apology at the end. Like she took it with a "I could care less" attitude. I thought Meegan was bitchy, but this woman was unbelievable. When that cult episode comes around we'll hopefully see detty again.
p.s. poor mandy :( It was great seeing her excited for someone, but it was too bad she was just one of the invited staff. I don't really blame Matt, since it was nice of him to do it. At the end with Betty and Matt....can't they just stay like that? Like good friends? Because I don't mind it. I just don't want them back together because they should move on.
