First the pretty

I realized I hadn't tried to do an actual digital painting in a while,so I fuddled this up. I used a reference photo for some of the pose,doodled a skeleton on top, then set to work. I've been trying to push myself to actually paint off of random colors, so I started with a yellowy green base and worked from there, which I like the results of a lot better than picking a skin tone color, a dress color, etc. Gratuituous use of blenders seems to make all the mistakes look artsy! And all the pretend folds in the dress. Oh well, still is very, very pretty and a good step in where I want to go.

I learned: Always give people handy clothing to cover up feet when you try to draw like this.

I finally got my Monster Comics back up on the web and in celebration I drew a new monster! She's precious!

So today buttfacemakani linked to some animation she did and I tried out the engine and made two very strange little animations of my own. ("Come happy, leave mad" and "IN YOUR FACE") And then I was drawing and accidently made this:

Sam and Ed (from ETR) are just having a nice secret conversation when someone interrupts!

Trout was drawing a bunch of butts lately, so I did a few butt studies, ranging from the ridonkulous to the substandard.

Who is that mysterious green girl?

About 86% of my drawings of girls are a variation on this face.

Recently I drew a bunch of things for a couple of friends gettin' hitched to use as table identifiers, along with numbers. We were asked to draw famous couples. Or at least famous to those two who were getting married. I got Beauty and the Beast, Fry and Leela, then forced upon them a Pirates of the Caribbean pair!

Ah yes, Jack and the monkey Jack! I originally did some crazing crosshatching just for fun, but removed it all for when I colored it.

Ren and Stimpy! I knew this one wasn't going to be for real, but I had to draw it anyway.

I'm getting to be pretty predictable here. It's all sci-fi or fantasy. I guess it's because I get enough of my regular people drawing kicks out with my comic. I gotta let it loose sometimes.

This is actually for a comic, as well. I stoppped caring so much by the time I got to the hooves, which you can tell.

She got kicked out of the Jedi Academy for hitting on all the cute guys and now she gets her revenge by hitting people with a stick. But is revenge really worth it, she wonders as she drops yet another hot Jedi master before dragging him back to her hut.

I don't make these things up!

She's sad because I gave up before I colored her dress. Sit up straight! That posture is too modern, missy!

So I've been listening to Rossini's Barber of Seville pretty nonstop for a couple of weeks and probably driving the people upstairs batty. But not only is this one of my favorite operas, I've had this idea of doing a comic version for a while now. But I'd have to put my own twist on it to keep from being incredibly influenced by the character designs in Kaoru Mori's Emma, which featured a stage production of Barber very briefly.

So what's the equivalent of a topman/barber in a space station? A mechanic, porbably! And Figaro has to be a girl. Because I like drawing girls.

Figaro has her traveling guitar to help out with her "unofficial" business of helping people hook up. She's a dating service and repairgirl all in one!

Almaviva is our hero. He's in love with Rosina, but has to adopt several disguises in order to meet her, since her guardian tries to keep her locked up tight.

Rosina is eager to be free from her guardian and has fallen in love with Almaviva, but knows him as Lindoro, a poor student, not as a wealthy space count!

Her guardian is Doctor Bartolo, who I decided to make a mad scientist. In keeping with my future rules, he has to wear the traditional kilt of science.

So here's a couple of caricatures I did for my final training class. I wanted to scan three, but I didn't get around to the third one. You'll have to see the baby and the baby panda another time. For now, though:

I like the look between the two. The color looks a bit wonky between the top half and the bottom half because I had to stitch two scans together...for some reason, the process worked a little better for the other drawing...

Interesting fact: when doing caricatures for the Zoo, I cannot include a hoop like that. I can't imply the animals doing tricks. Basically, the person and the animal should just sort of chill with each other.

Both of those were done from stock photos. PunchStock is my SAVIOR whenever I need drawing references.

So, I hadn't felt like drawing lately, but just yesterday I started doodling people on the newspaper and suddenly an idea popped in my head. BOY FIGHT. I then proceeded to do character sketches and write a 15 minute script and who knows if it'll ever get farther than that, but STILL. BOY FIGHT.

It all started off looking like this:

Then it came to this:

A colony on a distant planet! Political tension causes a bloodbath and only 3 teenagers remain alive in the wake! What will they do??

First girl: Genevieve Action, space "royalty".

Second girl: Lexington Classic, coffee addict

The boy in question: Dr. Jon Jr. His original died in the conflict and is now a brain in a jar. A wireless jar!

Of course there's a robot. And Dr. Jon before his demise.

They fight! and fight! and fight and fight and fight!

All this plus a central computer who wants to learn to love, hot dogs on sticks, and raging hormones!

Of course, afterwards I'd have to do a sequel. BOY FIGHT! 2 girls, 1 boy.... ON THE HIGH SEAS!

Suddenly I have the feeling I should do this under a psuedonym.

I've been coming up with characters for this fantasy comic for forever. They're fun to draw, sometimes because it's just an excuse to draw pretty girls in funny clothes. Or half wild girls in squalor, like the kid above.

I've been itching to post something, but just hadn't gotten around to it...I need to get some more sketching in. For now, though, here's a drawing that I did a while back, that I ended up scanning and using on my resume (all faded out and in the background)...I actually finished up the boots digitally, as this had been one of those drawings in which I forget where the edge of the page is and end up running off of it...thank goodness for tablets, though, eh?

Um, I don't know why she's wearing what she is, really. It's an odd outfit...but it seems to suit her. ^_^;

I have no idea.

Sometimes when I draw people I think of what they're feeling or thinking after I'm done. It usually goes like this:

"Durrrr, I'm a doodle!"

I'm still doing character design on people for a comic I'll get around to in about 5 years.

Muirne: She's mean, matronly, and likes pudding.

He's entirely too well groomed for his own good. This is also one of the few times I've saved in the middle of what I do a lot: I sketch a blue sketchy and then ink on top of it on another layer. And I don't erase, I just keep doing it over and over again until I like it. Which is why I've got a finished version and redo going on at the same time of the same head. And the newer one looks radically different from the one I just did! So much for consistency!

And sometimes I'm just wrong, wrong, wrong. Which is why these remain blue doodles.

S'okay, bro, they're not laughing at you. They're just doing the potty dance.

The lesser known "I've BEEN to the potty and it was FANTASTIC!" dance.That's also the title of the children's book I'm writing.

Drawing from pictures

Sometimes I like to draw from things like catalogues just to study how clothes actually work on people. It's funny how something that's cute in a picture can turn weird and ugly once I've drawn it. I only wear drawable fashion, btw. ;D

If this were a police line up, it would be a bad one.

One of these things is not like the other!

Trying to mimic a vintage photo look, so I practiced with a picture!

More original stuff next time! I've been preoccupied with comics.

This is Mandy Parker-Fujimoto, the same girl who turns up on Bill Mallonee's Friendly Fire CD art. I think she's gained about ten pounds since I last drew her doing anything fun. At one point, she was going to get a comic to herself, but then she went off into nowhere and said, "You have to do something else first. I'm busy."

This is generally what she's busy doing, and almost always to "Always The Same Medicine" by saidsame artist under the banner of Vigilantes of Love.

There's only so much I can put up with in the course of a reading day.

Haven't been drawing for several weeks. Easiest thing to start on: familiar shape. This is something which should eventually end up on a bio page, once inked and coloured and More Detailed and stuff. (Also seeing if posting a scrapbook image from the webform actually does what it ought to.)
