New Fiction Available At The Edge Of Propinquity

Volume 33: September, 2008
Hello everyone!

Volume 33 of The Edge of Propinquity has been published! September begins the time of harvest and readying oneself for the coming winter. This often means the spilling of blood in sacrifice. Blood is spilt this month in the form of a rescued man, an ambushed innocent, a self-sacrifice, loyal servants doing their master's bidding and a demon's demise.

Kendrick - Candle's Flame by Jennifer Brozek AKA gaaneden
While the Bacchanalia Coven join with the Makah Tribe for protection, Mason, Aaron and David fight to free Doctor Mercer from his spirit enslaver. There are casualties on both sides, some of whom end up on John and Karen's doorstep. Meanwhile, Vicki has had enough.

Luminations - Escalation by Rick Silva AKA shaharazad
Katy McCormick has been waiting for the new school year, and a reunion with her friends. Her enemies have been waiting too. They're out to hurt Katy and her friends any way they can. Hostilities are about to escalate, and for Katy, sophomore year is going to be hell, starting from day one.

Santa Maria - Losses by James M. The dark forces of the wild and of civilization are moving against and within the Farm. And the first of many falls this night.

Guest Author - Jasper and the Imp by Daniel Johnson
While Jasper seeks to protect his master's home and property from the evil squirrels, he encounters real evil in the form of an imp and a surly next door neighbor. Luckily for all involved, Jasper also has friends willing to help him out.

Have you ever looked over the edge and seen something looking back at you?

New Stories Now Online At The Edge Of Propinquity

Volume 32: August, 2008

Hello everyone! Volume 32 of The Edge of Propinquity has been published! After the turning point of the Summer Solstice, the hot August night drift slowly towards fall. That turning point is undefined and unmistakable. As are the turning points in our stories this month. Death, hope, rebirth, pain and fear - all part of the cycle - all part of our stories this month.

Kendrick - Absorption by Jennifer Brozek Though wounded, the Avatar of Anu is not defeated. In fact, he strikes out with lethal force in order to survive. The Grey Lady delivers a disturbing prophecy and several people plan to deal with Doctor Mercer.

Luminations - Date by Rick Silva Katy McCormick's summer is going well. She has a job, a brand new iPhone, and a new boyfriend. Of course, with the new relationship comes the issue of trust. How many of her secrets is Katy willing to share? How much is she willing to risk? In a quiet garden, reflections on the past give way to what could be a very disturbing revelation about the future.

Santa Maria - Tears by James M. Sullivan Melanie and Bree argue, resulting in Melanie taking some drastic actions and her true motives for her visit are revealed. Meanwhile, Diasuke and others act on what he learned from Duncan while Mac and his mother keep each other in the loop, both mundane and magical.

Vorare - All Hands by Ivan Ewert As Gordon and George move ever closer toward the Walpurgisnacht celebrations, the dance of their mentors grows closer as well. What are the men of Vorare - pawns, children, sons or heroes?

Guest Author - Lonely Cries the Winter Wind by Patrice Sarath Thomas is a man under siege. He is also more than a man who believes he is alone - as he must be - for the coming battle. However, allies arrive from unexpected quarters and will not take 'no' for an answer. Then, things take an unexpected turn that will change his life forever.

Have you ever looked over the edge and seen something looking back at you?

New Issue of The Edge of Propinquity

Read my new story and find out how Katy is spending her summer vacation, plus lots of other goodies from my co-authors.

Volume 31: July, 2008
Hello everyone!

Volume 31 of The Edge of Propinquity has been published! As the summer months heat up, so do our stories. This month, we have a near miss, revenge taken, a sacrifice made, hope given and a warning proclaimed.

Kendrick - The Past and the Present Collide by Jennifer Brozek AKA gaaneden
While Karen and John grapple with the reappearance of Aaron in Kendrick and his newfound friendship with David, a great victory is made against the Children of Anu at the ultimate sacrifice of one.

Luminations - Signing by Rick Silva AKA shaharazad
Katy McCormick has completed her freshman year in college, and she's landed a summer job at a mall bookstore. She's looking forward to a dull and uneventful summer where the worst danger she faces will be from the crowds at the Harry Potter release party. But when she's assigned to help out a local author with a book signing, Katy finds that past dangers have a way of resurfacing, and her summer is off to a decidedly eventful start.

Santa Maria - Storms by James M. Sullivan AKA sylvan
While a storm rages down on Santa Maria, Helen comes to her daughter's aid, Ant and Rod try to find a little peace, and those who remain set about to finding answers; though it is Diasuke who is successful when an old friend tells him of an entirely different storm.

Vorare - Hands of Glory by Ivan Ewert AKA ivan23
Gordon finds a crack in the Ally's power, a crack which might promise redemption from the service of his wound. Yet in pursuing that secret agenda, has he fallen further into the demonic nets?

Guest Author - Birth of a Hunter by Dylan Birtolo AKA eyezofwolf
With the murder of his friend and mentor, Gabriel is set upon the path of destiny. As part of that journey, he must hunt down this murderer and retrieve what was stolen. However, just as Gabriel is, the murderer is more than he seems.

Have you ever looked over the edge and seen something looking back at you?

As the summer heats up, so do our stories. This month, we have a satisfying revenge, the foreshadowing of what is to come, enemies coming together as allies fight back, the discovery that the world is not as one thought and chance taken with high stakes.

Kendrick - Entropy by Jennifer Brozek AKA gaaneden
As things come together for those allied against the avatar of Anu, the host of the god is forced to order sacrifices before their time. The foundation of Kendrick is about to be rocked to its core.

Luminations - Misdirection by Rick Silva AKA shaharazad
Katy McCormick goes on the offensive in her fight against the campus secret society known as the Granite Lodge. In an isolated cabin in the woods, she offers to make a deal with her enemies. Katy has come prepared, but she's playing a dangerous game of misdirection where any wrong move could have very nasty consequences.

Santa Maria - Exchanges by James M.
New Stories Online At The Edge Of Propinquity

If April showers bring May flowers, our garden is filled with carnivorous plants sporting sharp thorns and poisoned petals. This month we have a fight between practitioners of the Old Ways, the leaving behind of an old life, an unexpected fist to the face, trapped people fighting a hidden monster and innocents caught between two hard decisions.

Kendrick - May Day by Jennifer Brozek AKA gaaneden
Powers are gathering to fight the avatar of Anu while mere mortals are being forced to chose sides in this battle they do not understand. First blood is struck to unknown consequences.

Luminations - Chains by Rick Silva AKA shaharazad
A distant tragedy casts a shadow over the campus, and Katy McCormick finds herself caught up in watching the events unfold on cable news. It's the day of the Virginia Tech shootings, and Katy faces her own fears as friends come together for comfort and reassurance. Amidst the distractions, Katy's enemies seize an opportunity.

Santa Maria - Prisoners by James M. Bree and Rodrigo worry about the future. The creatures attack again.

Vorare - Away by Ivan Ewert AKA ivan23
In the aftermath of the Chainfield's invasion of their home, Gordon's mother is assisted by her neighbors while Gordon himself faces the hospital, the police - and the wrath of his Ally.

Guest Author - Hotter Than Hell by Mischa Sagan
Deep in the Chicago summer months, during a deadly heat wave fit to set records, Abigail is asked to take in a poor refugee and her daughters. Reluctant but unable to say no to this request, she does and discovers something: an evil worth fighting against.

Have you ever looked over the edge and seen something looking back at you?

104 comic pages - pages 6-8

I'm way behind on my 104 pages. But I have sample panels from three more.

First, Knifeclaw Company:

The first one is Hraith sitting alone on the bridge. He's getting some bad news. Hehe.

The second one is Hraith and Hai-caauhk walking through the reptilians' warehouse satellite together. I have to say - drawing wacky alien tech is hard. It's hard to get inspiration for the little details. But drawing a monopodal winged alien in various poses, most of them slinky, is about the hardest thing I've done since I started to draw comics. You'd think Hai-caauhk is just like Quetzalcoatl, just a big slithery snake with wings, but this is not so.

For one thing, his wings are bigger than his body. It only makes sense biologically. I think I'll have to resign myself to the fact that he'll almost never completely fit into a panel.

And thirdly, a sample of the guest page I did for Dark Red, a webcomic I'm a big fan of:

It's about a blind woman who gets thrust into a war between angels and demons. Visit the website to see my page in its entirety, and/or to read the original comic.

If April showers bring May flowers, all of the flowers will be stained with blood. This month, a chance to right a wrong, the revelation of some disturbing truths, a good deed being punished, a case of mistaken identity and a hidden danger hidden no more. This month is a bloody one.

Kendrick - Observations by Jennifer Brozek AKA gaaneden
David and Aaron have an eventful meeting based on something Aaron has seen about Doctor Mercer. She's been longing for the freedom of the open road, but with that freedom comes danger. When Katy tries to help out a stranger in need, she finds herself trapped and hunted, and she is forced into a direct confrontation with the supernatural.

Santa Maria - Problems by James M.
This one is from Knifeclaw Company.

Obviously it's not done, and in its final form it will probably be arranged a little differently. Sorry for the weird white line through the center. The original is 11x17, which makes it a singular challenge for my scanner to scan. It can't quite handle scanning the page in two halves.

But I'm posting it anyway because I think it's really neat and I'm proud.

Comic reviews from SPACE

We went to SPACE (Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo) and returned with lots of indie comic books. I shall now attempt to review a few.

Lackluster World #5 by Eric Adams
I've been a fan of Lackluster World from Issue #1. Choosing this one as my first comic to read was a mistake. You know how sometimes you read a comic book that moves you so much, you don't dare pick up another when you're done? Because the odds of finding something comparable in your to-be-read stack is pretty damn low? That's what LW#5 did to me.

Eric mentioned to me that it was his favorite so far, and now I know why. We get to glimpse a flashback into Fahrenheit Monahan's childhood, where, predictably, he turns out to have been the victim of bullying. Normally I'd say it's a tired theme, and while nothing really profoundly original happens, Eric uses several elements expertly to deliver a proverbial punch in the gut. And, possibly, move the reader to tears.

(I must disclose here that since I rescue and rehabilitate special-needs cats, and am intimately familiar with the kinds of abuse people can commit to small, vulnerable pets, I might react more strongly than someone who doesn't spend much time with animals.)

Excellent book all in all. I would recommend that new readers read the series from the beginning. I can't wait for the next issue. I'm glad Eric publishes his books faster than I do. :)

Kidnapped by Gnomes: Lapses in Judgment by Kathy Peterson
A hard copy collection from a largely undiscovered but worthwhile webcomic. Ed and Wilson the house gnomes cause Kathy much grief. They play with the kitchen appliances, steal her credit card, and bicker about politics, while Kathy (who casts herself as a metacharacter and never actually appears) desperately tries to maintain order and sanity in her household. The creator's intelligence shines through all the silliness, and although it's easy to tell she's a political and social liberal, she treats the political themes with level-headedness, fairness, and insight. But on top of that, there's a whole lot of silliness.

The art is simple and uses a limited palette (mostly purples and blues), and the gnomes are of her own design and don't resemble garden gnomes at all. Kidnapped by Gnomes has a steady, easy-to-follow rhythm that starts early and remains consistent. It doesn't develop any heart-wrenching, poignant long-term plotlines - but on the flip side, it doesn't degenerate into any failed attempts at meaningful plotlines either. Just lighthearted political and social commentary mixed in with simple gags and jokes.

Seductions by Gary Scott Beatty and Bill Bryan
For mature readers. A vampire love story. If you love vampires with human hearts, you are the target audience. If you're ambivalent toward the vampire genre but wouldn't mind reading a well-written one, you might like this book too. If you despise all things vampiric and hope to die without ever seeing another story from that tired, overdone genre... sorry, you're better off looking elsewhere for reading material.

The main character, a vampire, narrates - dialogue takes a back seat as a storytelling tool. Through a series of flashbacks, we learn how our antihero developed the attitude toward women that he currently has (he respects them considerably more than most people respect their food). He approaches his womanizing/hunting like a quest, seeking that certain je ne sais quois that he'll hopefully recognize if he ever finds it.

The art is beautiful, and the character development is strong and sensible, logically following the parameters of a Highlander-like immortal existence. The story moves quickly, giving just an overview of his lifestyle, but that just means there's less opportunity for contradictions or logical fallacies to crop up. While I don't feel like I know the main character intimately, the story is strong for the level it covers. The ending, while not twisty or unexpected, is satisfying enough without hitting you with a sledgehammer.

New Fiction Online At The Edge Of Propinquity

Volume 26: February, 2008
Hello everyone!

Volume 26 of The Edge of Propinquity has been published! February is a time of love and joy. The winter is almost over and hints of spring are around every corner. So, too, is February a time of pain, lose and loneliness. Love can be as terrible as it is wonderful. It is both a balm for the soul and a most vicious weapon. This month, we have a scorned offer of friendship, a haunting that changes one from the inside, the slow gathering of pieces of a city, a broken promise mended, an attempted rescue and a promise that death is not the end that is then revealed as a curse.

Kendrick - Broken by Jennifer Brozek AKA gaaneden
As one of the oldest powers in Kendrick is broken, an alliance is revealed. Though, that alliance may not be as strong as some believe. An olive branch is scorned and a familiar face returns.

Luminations - Podcast by Rick Silva AKA shaharazad
Katy McCormick uncovers a campus legend. It's a haunted audio file, a podcast that comes with rumors of a sinister curse. The more Katy investigates, the more unnerving the discoveries become. But without more than a gut instinct, she must convince a close friend that this could be more than just another urban myth.

Santa Maria - Gatherings by James M. Sullivan AKA sylvan
Bree reconnects with her family once she’s home from the hospital while Rod meets with the remaining supernaturals of Santa Maria. Mac learns more about becoming an avatar and the murderer strikes again.

Vorare - Minding by Ivan Ewert AKA ivan23
Gordon's Ally provides a harsh reminder of the debt he owes, and the promises he has made to this enigmatic servant. A new understanding is reached between the two, one which threatens what little peace Gordon has found within his mother's home

Sojourns - Love Lost, Part Two by Ryan Macklin AKA macklinr
With the kidnapping of her beloved, Carolyn Thompson set out on a journey. Quite recently in this journey, she found herself the victim of her own fractured mind. She committed a great atrocity in the Mad City without any memory of it, and that will come back to haunt her.

Guest Author - The Valley by Alana Joli Abbot
True love is the hardest thing to get over. It is also the strongest reason one can have for retribution. In the story of "The Valley", the land of the dead itself cries out for retribution against having its people taken from it and love, in all its forms, is its most vicious weapon.

Have you ever looked over the edge and seen something looking back at you?

New Stories Online At The Edge Of Propinquity!

If you haven't been reading my Luminations series of geeky supernatural mystery stories, this month is as good a time as any to jump in. I've switched narrators again. My new lead character is Katy McCormick, who appeared in the previous two years in a supporting role. I hope you will enjoy reading about her adventures, and that you'll also check out the other excellent stories on the site!

Volume 25: January, 2008
Hello everyone!

Welcome to the third year of The Edge of Propinquity! As the Editor and Chief Cat Herder of this project, I could not be more pleased. This year, we have our returning 2007 authors - Rick Silva, Ivan Ewert, James M. Sullivan and myself, Jennifer Brozek. Each of us is returning with another season arc in our respective universes and with the 2008 theme of "Retribution" this year's story arcs promise to be exciting.

For 2008, we have the addition of a new story page called Sojourns, the stories in this section will be written by returning TEoP author Ryan Macklin, author of the Hidden City stories from 2006. With him, Ryan brings a few friends. He will be writing in specific independent RPG worlds in three episode mini-arcs. For each mini-arc, a full story will be told and all the information to learn more about the RPG worlds will be included. I am very interested in where Ryan will be taking TEoP over the year.

As always, we still have our Guest Quarters section of the webzine. These monthly stories by old and new authors are sure to delight. The submission guidelines are posted on the website (http://www.edgeofpropinquity.net/library.asp?id=61) and open all year round. As the Edge of Propinquity is a semi-pro webzine, this is a paying website at $50 per accepted guest author story.

January is a time of beginnings and that has never been more true here at the Edge of Propinquity. This month, we have the beginning of the end of some, the beginning of a new life for others, the beginning of trouble to come and the journey of new paths taken. Come join us on our journey. We are glad to have you.

Kendrick - Shades of Grey by Jennifer Brozek AKA gaaneden
As the new year begins in Kendrick, all is not well. In fact, far from it for some of the denizens of this fair and unusual city. The Master of the City has noticed. So have others. All are taking steps to investigate and combat the growing darkness.

Luminations - Entry by Rick Silva AKA shaharazad
Katy McCormick is enjoying life as a college freshman. She's got new friends, new opportunities, and now a new set of mysteries to investigate. When someone hacks Katy's blog and nearly causes a panic with a dangerous hoax, Katy wonders if it could be a case of old enemies catching up with her. She turns to a new friend to help her find the answers, only to discover that her friend is dealing with a mystery too. And Katy isn’t the only one with enemies on campus.

Santa Maria - Surprises by James M. Rod tries to deal with the guilt he feels for all that has happened and Mac resurfaces, meeting with Diasuke. Meanwhile, a new danger unfolds.

Vorare - Missives by Ivan Ewert AKA ivan23
Having lost contact with the men it sent to collect or kill Gordon Velander, the Farm makes contact with its southern counterparts in the Chainfields. The families agree to a meeting, and to post observers over the now-peaceful Velander household...

Sojourns - Love Lost, Part One by Ryan Macklin AKA macklinr (NEW)
Our first sojourn takes place in a city of living nightmares and hyper-talented insomniacs. One of these Awake, Carolyn Thompson, is desperately looking for her lost love. Tragedy strikes, as she snaps and commits terrible acts that she doesn't even remember.

Guest Author - Cats and Dogs and Maybe a Pig by Kevin Shamel AKA shameless_ismor
Vance is in lust with his father's girlfriend, Liz. This has been a fact since he's being in high school. One odd thing... Liz and Vance's dad don't have sex. That is just the way it was. However, this weekend, his father is out of town and Liz is over looking like she wants something his father never gets and Vance is determined to get it.

Have you ever looked over the edge and seen something looking back at you?

104 comic book pages in 2008

Hi. 'Tis I. My resolution this year is to draw 104 comic book pages - two per week - and post them here. Maybe I'll just post snippets - a panel or two each. Most of them will be rather big.

Projects on the drawing board include Zephyr & Reginald: Minions For Hire #3, Knifeclaw Company, Orcish Love Story, Zephyr & Reginald Fight With Girls, and possibly a minicomic involving unpopular species. Oh, and the little two-pager I'm working on as I type: "Interview With a Dungeon Monster."

It should be an exciting, productive, art-filled year and I hope people are interested in following along.

I just changed the settings so that any community member can post. It seems silly to limit posting to just my husband and me! I don't think we thought that through very well when we made this community.

So, now, please speak up if you feel like it. Introduce yourselves. I've only met or chatted with a few people reading this. I'd like to get to know the rest.

Hi! I'm Gynn, the artist! Who are you?

New Stories Posted At The Edge Of Propinquity

Volume 24: December, 2007
Hello everyone!

Volume 24 of The Edge of Propinquity has been published! December, the heart of winter, is often the darkest time of year for people to bear - metaphorically and physically. For those who dwell at the edge of propinquity it is no different. This month, to end out Year Two: Consequences, we have effort in vain, a pyrrhic victory, peace at a cost, a final showdown and a dearest wish granted. None of which is as good or as bad as it seems. In some cases, it is worse. Here, we close the year with the lesson learned that consequences for actions - intended or not - are felt long after the fact.

Kendrick - Too Little, Too Late by Jennifer Brozek AKA gaaneden
The clock is ticking down to an inevitable end. Although Karen and John can gather the rest of the supernatural groups together to rescue the Abbot from the Children of Anu, they are far too late and more than lives are lost.

Luminations - An Accounting by Rick Silva AKA shaharazad
Nancy Mateo walks away from the carnage of the failed ritual, and from the loss of someone dear to her. She walks into the cold darkness of a snowy New Hampshire night to settle affairs with former friends, and with the dark figure of the hunter who has haunted her dreams for the past year. The time has come for an accounting, and it's one in which the price that must be paid could very well be Nancy's own life.

Santa Maria - Battles by James M. Sullivan AKA sylvan
It's all coming down to the final battle. Enid and Mac attempt to convince the Council Dictum they must act against the Ghost Lords, who are enacting the final part of their plan - with Acolyte Garcia and Duncan in tow. Meanwhile, an injured Bree must convince Rodrigo and Ant to allow her to go to battle against the Ghost Lords.

Vorare - Into the Gloaming by Ivan Ewert AKA ivan23
A decision is made, and a peace is struck - even if it is only for a single evening, a family is reborn, and a refuge found.

Guest Author - Seasonal Work by Peter Friend
Brian and Henry are second rate Santas who work through the holiday season. Unfortunately, ever store in the whole area seems to have found new "super-Santas" to work for them. When confronted by Brian and Henry, one of these "super-Santas" gives the men exactly what they ask for.

Have you ever looked over the edge and seen something looking back at you?

New Issue of The Edge of Propinquity is posted!

Volume 23: November, 2007
Hello everyone!

Volume 23 of The Edge of Propinquity has been published! November is a time of reaping what has been sown and feasting upon it. For some, it is a bitter meal while for others it is a true homecoming. This month we have the rediscovery of lost memories, a reuniting of family, the determination to do what is right, a Solstice ritual and the repayment of debt. This is the penultimate issue of the year and everything is coming to a head.

Kendrick - Ultimatums, Part Two by Jennifer Brozek AKA gaaneden
Lines have been drawn in the sand and gauntlets thrown. Forces are in motion and all loyalties are being called into question. As old debts are forced to be repaid, much to the dismay of the debtors, it is already too late for two.

Luminations - Solstice by Rick Silva AKA shaharazad
Nancy Mateo agrees to assist in a ritual that will free the souls that here enemies have kept prisoner. Risking her own life and the lives of those she holds dear, Nancy enters into a clash in which the line between allies and enemies is blurred and the consequences are deadly.

Santa Maria - Decisions by James M. Sullivan AKA sylvan
Mac tries to update Enid, but is interrupted by the news of his mother’s return to Santa Maria, but does she know more about what is going on then he does? Bree, Rod, and Ant decide to take bold steps to stop the Ghost Lords while Eleanor makes a bold decision herself.

Vorare - Prodigal by Ivan Ewert AKA ivan23
Gordon returns to his mother's home, bearing the gifts he hopes will save her - and finds himself up against a barrier which he could not have expected.

Guest Author - What You Need by Jason Andrew AKA highway_west
Jeffrey Davis is a food critic on a mission. A secret new restaurant had opened up and it is the toast of the town. One small problem: patronage is by invitation only. Through less than honest means, he gets his invitation. However, once there, what he finds is not what he expects but is exactly what he needs.

Have you ever looked over the edge and seen something looking back at you?

New stories now online at The Edge of Propinquity

Volume 22: October, 2007
Hello everyone!

Volume 22 of The Edge of Propinquity has been published! There is a chill in the air and anticipation on the wind. October is the month of transition from fall into winter. There is a sense of motion. The death of the year is approaching but not here yet. Last minute packing, storing and cleaning happens in a flurry before we all must settle down for the coming cold. This month at TEoP we have bargains made, stories told, loyalties tested and a series of unfortunate occurrences. There is movement within all of the story arcs; one that cannot be stopped. The end is coming for more than one.

Kendrick - Ultimatiums, Part One by Jennifer Brozek AKA gaaneden
The anthill of Kendrick's supernatural population has been kicked over and they have organized to the defense of themselves and the city because of it. Also, loyalties are being tested, favors are being called in and the smoke of burning bridges can be seen in the distance.

Luminations - Elimination, Part Two by Rick Silva AKA shaharazad
Old allies reunite to as Nancy Mateo finds herself in the hands of her enemies. Nancy's ordeal leaves her struggling with doubts about the path she has chosen, but she finds strength in the realization that she will not have to walk that path alone.

Santa Maria - Plights by James M. Sullivan AKA sylvan
Bree, Rodrigo, and Mac brainstorm on what course of action to take. Grace/Acolyte Garcia mourns her mentor and Duncan decides to take matters into his own hands. Just as they are getting answers, Bree and Mac come face to face with the true fury of the Ghost Lords.

Vorare - Dealings by Ivan Ewert AKA ivan23
Gordon accepts his Ally's offer to summon a being who could help get his mother to safety. But there is danger in dealing with these forces - danger, and opportunity.

Guest Author - Reflections by Matthew Marovich AKA cuddlycthulhu
On the worst day of her life, Aggie meets an old man who reflects her own loss and sorrow in many ways. He tells her of the mythical Ghost Train and the cost of a ticket. He tells her that he already has his ticket for the train which makes her wonder what she would be willing to give up to get her own ticket.

Have you ever looked over the edge and seen something looking back at you?
