Hello everyone!

Volume 33 of The Edge of Propinquity has been published! September begins the time of harvest and readying oneself for the coming winter. This often means the spilling of blood in sacrifice. Blood is spilt this month in the form of a rescued man, an ambushed innocent, a self-sacrifice, loyal servants doing their master's bidding and a demon's demise.

Kendrick - Candle's Flame by Jennifer Brozek AKA gaaneden
While the Bacchanalia Coven join with the Makah Tribe for protection, Mason, Aaron and David fight to free Doctor Mercer from his spirit enslaver. There are casualties on both sides, some of whom end up on John and Karen's doorstep. Meanwhile, Vicki has had enough.

Hello everyone! Volume 32 of The Edge of Propinquity has been published! After the turning point of the Summer Solstice, the hot August night drift slowly towards fall. That turning point is undefined and unmistakable. As are the turning points in our stories this month. Death, hope, rebirth, pain and fear - all part of the cycle - all part of our stories this month.

Kendrick - Absorption by Jennifer Brozek Though wounded, the Avatar of Anu is not defeated. In fact, he strikes out with lethal force in order to survive. The Grey Lady delivers a disturbing prophecy and several people plan to deal with Doctor Mercer.

Luminations - Date by Rick Silva Katy McCormick's summer is going well. She has a job, a brand new iPhone, and a new boyfriend. Of course, with the new relationship comes the issue of trust. How many of her secrets is Katy willing to share? How much is she willing to risk? In a quiet garden, reflections on the past give way to what could be a very disturbing revelation about the future.

Santa Maria - Tears by James M. Sullivan Melanie and Bree argue, resulting in Melanie taking some drastic actions and her true motives for her visit are revealed. Meanwhile, Diasuke and others act on what he learned from Duncan while Mac and his mother keep each other in the loop, both mundane and magical.

Vorare - All Hands by Ivan Ewert As Gordon and George move ever closer toward the Walpurgisnacht celebrations, the dance of their mentors grows closer as well. What are the men of Vorare - pawns, children, sons or heroes?

I'm way behind on my 104 pages. But I have sample panels from three more.

First, Knifeclaw Company:

The first one is Hraith sitting alone on the bridge. He's getting some bad news. Hehe.

The second one is Hraith and Hai-caauhk walking through the reptilians' warehouse satellite together. I have to say - drawing wacky alien tech is hard. It's hard to get inspiration for the little details. But drawing a monopodal winged alien in various poses, most of them slinky, is about the hardest thing I've done since I started to draw comics. You'd think Hai-caauhk is just like Quetzalcoatl, just a big slithery snake with wings, but this is not so.

For one thing, his wings are bigger than his body. It only makes sense biologically. I think I'll have to resign myself to the fact that he'll almost never completely fit into a panel.

And thirdly, a sample of the guest page I did for Dark Red, a webcomic I'm a big fan of:

Volume 28 of The Edge of Propinquity has been published! If April showers bring May flowers, all of the flowers will be stained with blood. This month, a chance to right a wrong, the revelation of some disturbing truths, a good deed being punished, a case of mistaken identity and a hidden danger hidden no more. This month is a bloody one.

David and Aaron have an eventful meeting based on something Aaron has seen about Doctor Mercer. Because of it, David does something unexpected and sees something he does not understand but knows is important. John Corso receives a package for Karen.

Katy McCormick sets out on a Spring Break road trip despite the concerns of her Father. She's been longing for the freedom of the open road, but with that freedom comes danger. When Katy tries to help out a stranger in need, she finds herself trapped and hunted, and she is forced into a direct confrontation with the supernatural.

Mac explores the prison and experiences a problem while Bree and Rod try to puzzle out what's happening. Ant finds out watching over Oliver is a problem which lands him in an even larger problem.

Obviously it's not done, and in its final form it will probably be arranged a little differently. Sorry for the weird white line through the center. The original is 11x17, which makes it a singular challenge for my scanner to scan. It can't quite handle scanning the page in two halves.

But I'm posting it anyway because I think it's really neat and I'm proud.

We went to SPACE (Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo) and returned with lots of indie comic books. I shall now attempt to review a few.

Lackluster World #5 by Eric Adams
I've been a fan of Lackluster World from Issue #1. Choosing this one as my first comic to read was a mistake. You know how sometimes you read a comic book that moves you so much, you don't dare pick up another when you're done? Because the odds of finding something comparable in your to-be-read stack is pretty damn low? That's what LW#5 did to me.

Eric mentioned to me that it was his favorite so far, and now I know why. We get to glimpse a flashback into Fahrenheit Monahan's childhood, where, predictably, he turns out to have been the victim of bullying. Normally I'd say it's a tired theme, and while nothing really profoundly original happens, Eric uses several elements expertly to deliver a proverbial punch in the gut. And, possibly, move the reader to tears.

(I must disclose here that since I rescue and rehabilitate special-needs cats, and am intimately familiar with the kinds of abuse people can commit to small, vulnerable pets, I might react more strongly than someone who doesn't spend much time with animals.)

Excellent book all in all. I would recommend that new readers read the series from the beginning. I can't wait for the next issue. I'm glad Eric publishes his books faster than I do. :)

Kidnapped by Gnomes: Lapses in Judgment by Kathy Peterson
A hard copy collection from a largely undiscovered but worthwhile webcomic. Ed and Wilson the house gnomes cause Kathy much grief. They play with the kitchen appliances, steal her credit card, and bicker about politics, while Kathy (who casts herself as a metacharacter and never actually appears) desperately tries to maintain order and sanity in her household. The creator's intelligence shines through all the silliness, and although it's easy to tell she's a political and social liberal, she treats the political themes with level-headedness, fairness, and insight. But on top of that, there's a whole lot of silliness.

The art is simple and uses a limited palette (mostly purples and blues), and the gnomes are of her own design and don't resemble garden gnomes at all. Kidnapped by Gnomes has a steady, easy-to-follow rhythm that starts early and remains consistent. It doesn't develop any heart-wrenching, poignant long-term plotlines - but on the flip side, it doesn't degenerate into any failed attempts at meaningful plotlines either. Just lighthearted political and social commentary mixed in with simple gags and jokes.

Seductions by Gary Scott Beatty and Bill Bryan
For mature readers. A vampire love story. If you love vampires with human hearts, you are the target audience. If you're ambivalent toward the vampire genre but wouldn't mind reading a well-written one, you might like this book too. If you despise all things vampiric and hope to die without ever seeing another story from that tired, overdone genre... sorry, you're better off looking elsewhere for reading material.

The main character, a vampire, narrates - dialogue takes a back seat as a storytelling tool. Through a series of flashbacks, we learn how our antihero developed the attitude toward women that he currently has (he respects them considerably more than most people respect their food). He approaches his womanizing/hunting like a quest, seeking that certain je ne sais quois that he'll hopefully recognize if he ever finds it.

The art is beautiful, and the character development is strong and sensible, logically following the parameters of a Highlander-like immortal existence. The story moves quickly, giving just an overview of his lifestyle, but that just means there's less opportunity for contradictions or logical fallacies to crop up. While I don't feel like I know the main character intimately, the story is strong for the level it covers. The ending, while not twisty or unexpected, is satisfying enough without hitting you with a sledgehammer.

Volume 26 of The Edge of Propinquity has been published! February is a time of love and joy. The winter is almost over and hints of spring are around every corner. So, too, is February a time of pain, lose and loneliness. Love can be as terrible as it is wonderful. It is both a balm for the soul and a most vicious weapon. This month, we have a scorned offer of friendship, a haunting that changes one from the inside, the slow gathering of pieces of a city, a broken promise mended, an attempted rescue and a promise that death is not the end that is then revealed as a curse.

Katy McCormick uncovers a campus legend. It's a haunted audio file, a podcast that comes with rumors of a sinister curse. The more Katy investigates, the more unnerving the discoveries become. But without more than a gut instinct, she must convince a close friend that this could be more than just another urban myth.

True love is the hardest thing to get over. It is also the strongest reason one can have for retribution. In the story of "The Valley", the land of the dead itself cries out for retribution against having its people taken from it and love, in all its forms, is its most vicious weapon.

Hello everyone!

Welcome to the third year of The Edge of Propinquity! As the Editor and Chief Cat Herder of this project, I could not be more pleased. This year, we have our returning 2007 authors - Rick Silva, Ivan Ewert, James M. Sullivan and myself, Jennifer Brozek. Each of us is returning with another season arc in our respective universes and with the 2008 theme of "Retribution" this year's story arcs promise to be exciting.

For 2008, we have the addition of a new story page called Sojourns, the stories in this section will be written by returning TEoP author Ryan Macklin, author of the Hidden City stories from 2006. With him, Ryan brings a few friends. He will be writing in specific independent RPG worlds in three episode mini-arcs. For each mini-arc, a full story will be told and all the information to learn more about the RPG worlds will be included. I am very interested in where Ryan will be taking TEoP over the year.

As always, we still have our Guest Quarters section of the webzine. These monthly stories by old and new authors are sure to delight. The submission guidelines are posted on the website (http://www.edgeofpropinquity.net/library.asp?id=61) and open all year round. As the Edge of Propinquity is a semi-pro webzine, this is a paying website at $50 per accepted guest author story.

January is a time of beginnings and that has never been more true here at the Edge of Propinquity. This month, we have the beginning of the end of some, the beginning of a new life for others, the beginning of trouble to come and the journey of new paths taken. Come join us on our journey. We are glad to have you.

Hi. 'Tis I. My resolution this year is to draw 104 comic book pages - two per week - and post them here. Maybe I'll just post snippets - a panel or two each. Most of them will be rather big.

Projects on the drawing board include Zephyr & Reginald: Minions For Hire #3, Knifeclaw Company, Orcish Love Story, Zephyr & Reginald Fight With Girls, and possibly a minicomic involving unpopular species. Oh, and the little two-pager I'm working on as I type: "Interview With a Dungeon Monster."

It should be an exciting, productive, art-filled year and I hope people are interested in following along.

I just changed the settings so that any community member can post. It seems silly to limit posting to just my husband and me! I don't think we thought that through very well when we made this community.

So, now, please speak up if you feel like it. Introduce yourselves. I've only met or chatted with a few people reading this. I'd like to get to know the rest.

Hello everyone!

Volume 24 of The Edge of Propinquity has been published! December, the heart of winter, is often the darkest time of year for people to bear - metaphorically and physically. For those who dwell at the edge of propinquity it is no different. This month, to end out Year Two: Consequences, we have effort in vain, a pyrrhic victory, peace at a cost, a final showdown and a dearest wish granted. None of which is as good or as bad as it seems. Hello everyone!

Volume 23 of The Edge of Propinquity has been published! November is a time of reaping what has been sown and feasting upon it. For some, it is a bitter meal while for others it is a true homecoming. This month we have the rediscovery of lost memories, a reuniting of family, the determination to do what is right, a Solstice ritual and the repayment of debt. This is the penultimate issue of the year and everything is coming to a head.

Next Sunday, November 4, Dandelion Studios will have an indy dealer table at The Boston Comic Book Spectacular.

Boston Radisson Hotel, 200 Stuart Street, 6th floor.

Admission is $5, $4 if you wear a costume.

I think it's going to be fun. The organizers are putting a greater emphasis on indy creators than in previous years. It'll be good to be a part of that.

Volume 22: October, 2007

Hello everyone!

Volume 22 of The Edge of Propinquity has been published! There is a chill in the air and anticipation on the wind. October is the month of transition from fall into winter. There is a sense of motion. The death of the year is approaching but not here yet. Last minute packing, storing and cleaning happens in a flurry before we all must settle down for the coming cold. This month at TEoP we have bargains made, stories told, loyalties tested and a series of unfortunate occurrences. There is movement within all of the story arcs; one that cannot be stopped. The end is coming for more than one.

The anthill of Kendrick's supernatural population has been kicked over and they have organized to the defense of themselves and the city because of it. Also, loyalties are being tested, favors are being called in and the smoke of burning bridges can be seen in the distance.

Luminations - Elimination, Part Two by Rick Silva AKA shaharazad
Old allies reunite to as Nancy Mateo finds herself in the hands of her enemies. Nancy's ordeal leaves her struggling with doubts about the path she has chosen, but she finds strength in the realization that she will not have to walk that path alone.

Santa Maria - Plights by James M. Sullivan AKA sylvan
Bree, Rodrigo, and Mac brainstorm on what course of action to take. Grace/Acolyte Garcia mourns her mentor and Duncan decides to take matters into his own hands. Just as they are getting answers, Bree and Mac come face to face with the true fury of the Ghost Lords.
