The Isis Awards

It's almost time for the 2008 Isis Awards!

For those who may not have heard of these awards, they were originally created to celebrate the less prolific het pairings in Stargate fanfiction. We wanted every author to be given a chance to shine, whether their chosen pairing was popular or not, and considering the success of these awards over the past few years, we feel that we've accomplished that goal. Now it's time to do it all again!

We've been working hard to make this year's awards better than ever, with a shiny new website and a brand new forum to help keep us all connected. Check us out here - http://www.isisawards.net/

Nominations open on October 4, so it's time to start tracking down all the great fics you've read over the past few months. We're very excited to get things started, and we hope you'll feel the same!

Sincerely,
The Isis Awards Team

Michelle made an off-hand comment about a little scene she might have liked to see in "First Contact." It involved a potential conversation between Daniel and Rodney ... and well, here's my take on it. Michelle, this one is for you, hope it's something like you imagined. If not, it's a D/J drabble nonetheless!

Title: Conversations About Love
Rating: PG
Spoilers: Through SGA "First Contact" and SG-1's entire series (especially "Heroes")
Disclaimer: I make no money off this. I don't own any of these characters.

Summary: Daniel and Rodney talk about relationships.

Daniel Jackson had been in some pretty bad situations in his ten years with the SGC. He’d been trapped in other dimensions, off-world prisons, Merlin’s lab, other plains of existence, Gou’ald motherships and his own mind to name a few. He’d died more times than he cared to count. But he’d gladly trade one of those situations for the one he was in right now.

Trapped in a prison of electric bars with Rodney McKay. Who had not shut up since they’d both awoken to find themselves trapped. In fact, if the scientist did not stop his incessant ramblings about being trapped, and new enemies, and the dangers of ancient technology and entering secret labs without knowing what they were for relatively soon, he was pretty sure he’d be forced into doing something drastic.

Since remarking on anything involving their current situation would obviously lead to the continuation of Rodney’s ranting about dying here on an empty stomach, he figured maybe it was time to try and shock the man into silence. Or at least get him going on a different topic. Because he really didn’t want to hear any more about how screwed they were. He’d figured that out on his own. And he knew from past experience that they couldn’t do anything about it until they got out of this cell or at least met their captors. Which didn’t look likely to be happening anytime soon. Which meant something else had to be done.

“So, Rodney,” he began, seeing the man turn to him, face annoyed at being interrupted, “since we can’t really do much about this situation at the moment, why don’t you tell me about what’s going between you and Doctor Keller.”

It worked. Rodney went silent. For all of about three seconds before he burst into speech again. “What do you mean? Nothing’s going on, why would you think that? Doctor Keller and I are colleagues and friends. Why do you think something’s going on?”

Daniel grinned. “Well, if your adamant denial wasn’t a clear sign, the way she was looking at you as she left with Ronan was pretty self-explanatory.”

Rodney went silent again for a few seconds before replying. “Wait a minute, how was she looking at me?”

The eagerness in his voice had Daniel holding back a laugh. “Well, she looked a little surprised when you wished her good-bye, and she was awfully quick to explain why Ronan was with her. I think he likes her too.”

“It doesn’t take a genius to figure that out,” Rodney muttered under his breath as Daniel covered his laugh with a cough. “Still, you really think she seemed surprised? I mean, we have had a few moments in the past few weeks. Although Ronan continually interrupts them, it’s like he finds ways to do that…”

Daniel sighed and settled back onto the floor. Rodney was rambling again, but at least it wasn’t about their certain doom. And he had to admit, it was pretty amusing to see Rodney McKay so flustered over a woman. He hadn’t been anywhere near this bad in his over-infatuation with Sam. He had a feeling his friend would get a real kick out of this when he told her about it. That’s assuming they lived through it. He sighed, his mind brought back to the present as he heard Rodney’s voice trail off.

“So, what do you think?”

For some reason, the words had a strange déjà vu to them. Daniel wasn’t sure why, but then again, he’d learned to accept the fact that there were a lot of things that he probably wasn’t going to remember or understand in the life he lived. Someday he might even get used to it. Thankfully, he was pretty sure that Rodney hadn’t wandered from topic, so he should be safe with a generic answer.

“I think you need to step up your game, or at least ask her out.” He saw Rodney open and then close his mouth. He watched in amusement as his colleague sank to the floor across from him.

“You think she’d say yes? I mean, honestly, we’ve had a few moments, but Ronan, well, he’s got the whole muscly, primal maleness thing that women seem to love, although that can’t compare to brains and knowledge and a rapier wit…”

“Ask her out Rodney, or let Ronan have her. You won’t get anywhere agonizing or analyzing this to death.” He grinned as Rodney finally fell silent and he basked in the quiet. He hadn’t realized how much he’d missed it since arriving in Atlantis.

“So what about you Doctor Jackson?”

Daniel looked up in confusion at Rodney’s question. “What about me what?”

“You seem pretty interested in my romantic life, what about yours? Anyone special waiting for you back home on Earth?”

Daniel caught his breath at the images that sprang to mind at Rodney’s words. Janet’s smiling face as they walked through the corridors of the SGC. The way her hand felt in his as he tried to reassure her he’d be there, whatever she needed, during Cassie’s rite of passage. The passion in her voice as she’d yelled that the sovereign did “not belong in that body and I intend to take it back!” The way she’d been so calm and reassuring in the middle of a firefight, making sure Sgt. Wells was thinking about his baby and wife instead of the gaping wound in his side. The almost eerie calmness on her face and her lifeless eyes as she lay on that forest floor.

“Daniel? You okay?”

He jerked himself out of the bittersweet memories to find Rodney watching him with a look of concern. Or at least he thought that’s what it might be. On Rodney, it was hard to tell.
“Sorry, I zoned out for a moment there.” He attempted a smile but his heart ached at the memories he’d just conjured up. Even three years later it still hurt to think of her and what might have been.

“You don’t have to talk about it, if you don’t want to.” Rodney’s words were stilted and uncomfortable, and he realized pretty quickly that they were sincere. He looked over to see the other man watching him with an interested yet guarded expression.

“No, it’s okay.” He took a deep breath. “There was someone, a doctor in fact.” He smiled as Rodney’s eyebrows rose. “She was incredible. And beautiful. And so smart it sometimes surprised you. And she was determined to save everyone, even me, even when she couldn’t.” His voice turned dreamy and he was completely unaware of the fascination on Rodney’s face as he listened.

“There were so many little things I loved about her. The way she could make you smile, or cut down Jack with a few well-placed words. The look in her eyes that she got when talking about Cassie, and the joy you could tell she felt at finally being a mother.” His throat closed at the memories of a smiling Cassie and Janet, setting out food for everyone at one of Jack’s many barbeques. The soft smile she seemed to give only to him, in moments when no one was watching. The concern in her eyes as he was brought into the infirmary, injured again, that quickly changed to relief and affection when she’d pronounced him cured.

“You’re talking about Doctor Fraiser, aren’t you?”

He started at Rodney’s words, coming back to the present and giving a weary smile. “What gave me away?”

“I caught on when you mentioned Jack and then Cassie,” Rodney offered with a slight smile and a shrug. “I didn’t know her that well, but she was always kind to me. I was sorry to hear she’d died.”

Daniel nodded, fighting back the wave of emotion the words sent through him. “She was a remarkable woman. I only wish I’d gotten the chance to tell her that. To tell her a lot of things.” He sighed, feeling melancholy again.

“You two never got together?” There was something like sorrow in the other man’s voice and after a moment, Daniel nodded.

“I was going to ask her out. Had it all planned. And then we all got called out on that damned mission. I never even got to tell her good-bye. I watched her die you know.” He saw Rodney start but remain silent. “It was like a movie, one moment she was alive and telling Simon that he was going to be okay, and live to see his daughter, the next, she was lifeless, so still and pale, lying before me.” His voice choked and he had to clear his throat, thankful Rodney remained silent.

“It was caught on tape, the moment of her death.” His voice was steady now, almost monotone. “It made it into the documentary of life at the SCG. A documentary that didn’t even get at how special, how wonderful a person she was to everyone that knew her.” The bitterness was undeniable now, the injustice of the situation, even three years later, still angered him.

“She must have been pretty special.”

Daniel looked over at Rodney and after a moment, nodded. “She was the best thing to ever happen to me, and I’ll never get to tell her that.” He paused, looking directly at the other man. “Don’t let Jennifer go without telling her how you feel. Because you’ll regret it the rest of your life.”

Rodney nodded and the two men fell silent, each lost in their own thoughts. Daniel closed his eyes for a moment, breathing deeply and letting the bad memories flow away, instead focusing on Janet’s smile, her gentle touch, that smile that could light up even the darkest room. That was how he remembered her. That was the image that helped him carry on even when he was ready to give up. Even when he was trapped behind bars by yet another group of unknown aliens with the fate of the world most likely in the balance.

The sound of footsteps broke him out of his reverie and he quickly stood, noting Rodney did the same. The two men looked at each other, and something like understanding passed between them. Taking a deep breath, Daniel closed his eyes, pictured Janet’s face and imagined her soothing voice in his head reassuring him once again. Opening his eyes, he felt a burst of renewed hope as he watched their captors enter the room. Things were going to be all right.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Continuum fic

Just a little double drabble that got stuck in my head after watching Continuum.

Title: Phantom Pain
Author: Misty
Pairing: Daniel/Janet-ish
Rating: Nothing bad
Double drabble
Isolated from his friends in another reality, Daniel finds a way to cope.

Feedback is love, and much appreciated.

***

Daniel frowned at the sensation he felt running down his left leg. "Phantom pain" it was called. Pain that lingered in the brain from a time when he was whole. A time that seemed so very long ago.

He hated this world. He hated this reality. He hated his situation. And, most of all, he hated the loneliness that had crept back into his life. His friends were miles away, and talking with them, even if it was just on the phone, was strictly forbidden.

He had only one saving grace.

He wasn't allowed to see Sam or Mitchell, but they didn't know about her. Even she didn't know how important she was to him. After all, to her he was just one of many patients, an amputee, someone in need of care.

But to him, she was everything.

He hated his injury, but even so he was glad for the excuse to see a familiar face.

"Hello, Dr. Jackson."

A familiar pain filled him as she spoke his name. It happened every time he was here, and for a moment Daniel wondered if it was possible that his heart was also suffering from phantom pains.

"Hello, Dr. Fraiser. It's good to see you."

Probably so.

~Misty

Dan/Jan forum?

Would any of you guys be interested in a Dan/Jan-centric forum/b-board? I'm really enjoying the InvisionFree forums I've joined lately, and it turns out they're... well, free! Heh.

They're really easy to navigate and fun to use, and I thought it could be a great way to bring some life back into Dan/Jan fandom. We seem to be segregated right now between LJ and Yahoo, and a lot of people don't even use either, so it would be a good way to bring us all together. Plus, it would be a place where we could talk about anything and everything - other fandoms, random off-topic stuff, even our real lives - so we could keep the conversation going every day rather than just when someone posts a fic.

Anybody interested in giving this a try? It wouldn't take the place of the LJ comm or the Yahoo group, just hopefully get us talking more and maybe wake up our muses a bit. If there's enough response from you guys, I'll go ahead and start building it, and see where it goes from there. :)
