Yet another Restaurant Recommendation Request
My parents have offered to take my wife and I out for dinner to celebrate my birthday next month. My wife and I have been to a fair number of restaurants in the Portland area, but I'm looking for something new. Below is a short list of some of the places we've gone.

* The Melting Pot - Didn't like it. Too expensive for the atmosphere/food quality.
* Higgins - Liked it, but I'd have to go when I knew they were serving something I'd enjoy
* Wildwood - Hit and miss, again depending on the current menu.
* Yuki - Good Japanese food, but not really birthday dinner fare
* The Ringside - Once, a long time ago. I don't really remember what it's like, but it seems like a nice steak house.
* Lovely Hula Hands - Good food, but the portions were a little small.
* Macaroni Grill - Love it (ask for Crash if you go), but we go a fair amount and I'd like something new.

Here's some of the places I was considering:
* Murata - Awesome Japanese food.
* Oba - Not sure what kind of food this is, but I've heard it's a really nice place.
* Portland Chop House - Co-worker suggestion
* The Henry's / Old Brewhouse - A co-worker also suggested this place
* Southpark - Went once, liked it
* Fratelli's - Per [info]circumambulate
* Hall Street Grill - Also per [info]circumambulate
* Cafe Mingo - Also per [info]circumambulate
* Tabla - [info]beansbouf
* Navarre - also [info]beansbouf
* Pambiche - [info]kellibunny

Any other suggestions/ideas/reviews?

I've been to Henry's, and it's pretty damn good. I had a mushroom swiss burger, and it was the best one I've ever had. They're supposedly famous for their martinis, and once you have one, you'll understand why. The menu didn't have a HUGE selection, but pretty much everything sounded good. And it's a fun atmosphere...the lights are kept kinda low and it's somewhat roomy. Unless you go into the bar, where it's so loud you can't hear yourself think. I wouldn't recommend a seat in the bar for a dinner with your parents. =)

I don't drink, so I probably won't be heading into the bar. What kind of food do they have?

Oba is one of my favorite restaurants in town. Sort of a Latin American/NW Fusion menu, I suppose you could call it - they generally have a set of rotating regional specials. Hit there website, and they should have a menu posted. Their prices have gone up a bit, the last couple of years, but I don't think they've yet outstripped the quality of the food.

Fratelli's is high on my list, as well - Regional N. Italian, primarily - and a bit less expensive than Oba.

I'll add Fratelli's to the list and check out Oba's website. Thanks!

Happy B-day!

If you're into good Italian, you might be interested in trying Ciao Vito on Alberta.

I second Portland Chop House if you want steak ... it's a great place that doesn't charge separately for your cut, your potato, your salad, etc., like some steak houses do.

Henry's has a nice ambience and a decent menu, and Southpark is great if you're into seafood and wine.

Taqueria Nueve on NE 28th is really good. I recommend anything on the menu and the margaritas are excellent. The lamb is especially yummy when they have it.

Up from there a few doors is Navarre. John does excellent stuff with simple meats and the portions are perfect for sharing. The coffee is really good there after dinner.

Also on the same street is Tabla. They have a prix fixe menu for $20. You get an appetizer, entree, and dessert. The pastas are amazing and anything chocolate that they have going on for dessert is worth it!

agreed - had a WONderful meal there this fall. iirc, mid-priced menu, excellent service and incredible food. if you gotta wash up before or during the meal, you can poke yer head right into the kitchen, which i liked... :D

I would second Fratelli. (Disclaimer: My friend Tim is co-owner.) If someone says "Italian Food" of course I think of Pasta-Heavy menus. That is simply not the case here. Chef Paul has a regional approach to Italian cooking that almost ignores the pastas altogether! Northern Italy is really the focus at Fratelli. All in all a great restaurant with great food.

If you're a fan of Japanese, Benihana's is fun-- it's by the Powell's in Beaverton, right across from Washington Square.

Dinner there is a little expensive ($25), but you can eat there for lunch for about $10, and the chefs put on a good show. Of course, it's never good for a rush lunch, but their food is excellent and you get a LOT of it for your money.

I have only been once, a couple years ago actually, but it was wonderful! It was for our anniversary and they helped my husband set up a table and flowers and the whole dinner in advance. I really need to go again, but we rarely get the opportunity to go somewhere nice.

my GF, brother, his GF and i enjoyed a new year's eve meal at OBA. nice atmosphere, cool happy hour, but be prepared to scrape out the wallet. we did not go overboard on expensive fluffy stuff and it was ~$50 a person...

oba is amazing. they have a lot of tropical fish and rice sort of things. the mahi is delicious. definately expensive, but i live in new york now so it doesn't seem bad in comparison.

i really don't like fratelli'sor the brewhouse personally. mother's is a really nice place with good food, i second that.

as far as new suggestions go, il piatto in southeast is a really cute intimate italian place that has excellent food.
