Computer Troubles
OK, I was doing regular stuff, stuff I always do, and all of a sudden the computer goes out!

The screen went blue, and this is the message I got:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

PFN_LIST_CORRUPT

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If thisz is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical information:
***STOP: 0x0000004E, (0x00000007, 0x0000A64E, 0x00000001, 0x00000000)

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance

When I restarted, it gave me a message saying that Windows had recovered from a major problem and would I like to send an error report, which I did.

The only things I can think of were 1--recent internet/modem problems which have caused a lot of technictions to be bugging around the computer, 2--recent installation of Age of Mythology (which I've played without problem), and 3--yesterday I tried to install a program to read something and it said the program was corrupted and thereby the computer refused to load it.

The most likely seems #3, but I ran a virus scan right after that and it didn't show anything...

Yeah, last time I got this, it was shortly before the entire system crashed due to virii. But then I knew exactly what had *caused* the virii (damn bittorrent); here I have no such clue.

Ya, it was a Torrent file that trashed my machine.. Oh well! Good thing I have a ghost disk!

Sounds like a .dll got corrupted. Could be a critical .dll that the OS uses or it could be specific to an app. Perhaps your event logs might tell you more of the story? You might need to reinstall something? Problem is that I'm not sure what without knowing what file exactly was corrupted.

What you got is what we (at least those of us who have ever done tech support) affectionately term the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). They are known to happen time and again in Windows. Sometimes there is an underlying cause that would warrant your attention. Sometimes it's nothing serious and a reboot fixes it right up. If you want to do some research on whatever PFN_LIST_CORRUPT means.. feel free, but if I were you, I wouldn't get too stressed unless it starts happening all the time. As [info]vwsandcoffee said, Welcome to Windows. :)

Oh god. Don't listen to the guy below. That's hardly necessary. I went and looked up your error. Looks like you might have bad ram (or it might be going bad). Sheesh.

i'm not worth listening to? funny, the MCSE, computer science degree, and IT manager job i have say otherwise.

ever recover a box with stop errors relating to RAM? there could be quite a bit more too it than just swapping out some DIMM sticks. it ain't fun, but the rebuild and troubleshoot from there is easier... especially on a home computer.

sheesh right back at ya

i gods. stop errors.

reinstall ALL drivers and flash your bios and hope this fixes it up... otherwise dude, you're hosed.

that windows started again is a minor miracle... get your data off NOW.

if the reloading of drivers and a bios flash doesn't work then it's time to pull the partitions, reformat, and reinstall windows and all apps.

during the setup you'll find out which hardware issues there are, and resolve them then. i'm too lazy to google up your stop errors... and it's much easier to resolve them during an install than it is to try and fix them and keep your present environment.

my two cents.

Yeah, it's been running slowly, but it's *always* run slowly. Mostly it slows up after I quit a game of Age of Mythology.

OK, so the smartest thing you could do right now, is to backup your critical data. That's a given in any situation where your computer is barfing, and in all actuality, should be done on a regular basis.

That being said, I would reinstall Windows (after you have all your data backed up). This would allow you to reinstall your drivers and update the crap out of the system while you're at it.

If it's a dell, you should just be able to slip the Windows CD into your drive and restart. It will boot into the Windows installer. Here's a quick tutorial on how to format your system and install Windows: http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1435

Pay particularly close attention to the formatting options... select the LONG format option.

Follow all that and when windows is done, shove your driver cd into the drive and Dell's utility should launch. Call dell if you need any help with that.

Then install your antivirus and then, and only then get on the internet and run windows update until you can't update no mo'.

Oh, and if you experience any BSODs after the format, you're probably looking at a hardware (meaning the ram) or software (meaning the 3rd party applications you've installed) problem.

This will jsut serve to isolate some possibilities.... and besides, it's always nice to have a fresh install :D

If you're paranoid about hardware failure use the Dell Drivers/Diagnostic cd and boot onto the cd and run the full hardware diagnostics utility on it.

Other helpful hints would be to Start-->Control Panel-->Add Remove Programs and uninstall every unneeded application off your system. Reboot as needed.

Defragment your harddrive: Start-->Run-->dfrg.msc

If you receive this error message randomly, or when you try to start a program, remove extra memory or have the random access memory (RAM) in your computer tested. This behavior may occur if you have bad RAM.
