King Cake
Does anyone here know where I could find a King Cake for a friend of mine from New Orleans? He's been depressed lately, and really homesick, so I was thinking I'd get him one for Mardi Gras.

Any help would be appreciated.

Heres how elections are stolen....

I am curious how DP feels about election security? Also curious if we have a better system in place locally than the monkey busniess in that video??

Makin' keys
How does one go about getting duplicates of a key with "Do Not Duplicate" on it? Is this something you can even have done?

Bonus points if you can figure out why my icon is relevant here.

leather repair recommendation?
Because I'm a clumsy dimwit, I inadvertently damaged the surface of a friend's leather-bound jewelry box the other day. In the likely event that I'm unable to find a replacement, I plan on having it repaired.

Does anyone have personal experience with (and hopefully recommendations of) businesses who provide this kind of service? It's either leather or something that looks and feels a lot like leather.

Spanks!

Theatre Opening This Friday, Feb 1st
You may have seen my posts for this show elsewhere on livejournal, but I'm just so damn proud of how it's turning out that I wanted to share the info.

Best,

Steve Patterson

Pavement Productions and The Bluestockings are proud to present Dead of Winter, three ghost stories written for the stage by Portland playwright Steve Patterson.

Winter. Bare trees. Fog. A chill breeze. It's the perfect time of year to cozy up and tell stories about things that might be there, in the dark. In the night. And that's just what these three psychological chillers do: explore that which isn't there…unless it is.

  • Winner of the Sam Bass One-Act Contest in Austin, Whitechapel takes us to a London flat which may or may not be haunted by the grandfather of serial killers, Jack the Ripper.
  • A World Premiere written especially for The Bluestockings, Wet Paint invites us into a house which may or may not have uninvited guests, and a rainy night's séance which may or may not be harmless fun.
  • The evening wraps up with The Body, a visit with a grieving coroner who may or may not be a little too in touch with one of his "patients." The Body was featured in The Nature of Fear and Its Effects, produced by Jobsite Theatre at the Tampa Performing Arts Center.

Directed by Pavement Productions' Co-Producer Lisa L. Abbott, Dead of Winter's cast includes Trish Egan, Angie Hughes, Reba Kenison, Deborah Zelda Lee, Harold Phillips, Ben Plont, and Justina Price, with set design by Sean DeVine, lights by Julie Booth, and sound design by Gordon Romei.

Dead of Winter opens 8:00 PM February 1, 2008, at Performance Works Northwest (4625 SE 67th Avenue, Portland) in the Foster Arts District. It runs Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays through February 23rd. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door, and $10 for students and seniors. Thursdays are sliding scale. Tickets can be purchased online at www.theblustockings.com. (Also check out the Bluestockings site for a Dead of Winter teaser video.) For reservations, call 503-777-2771.

CNA training?
I've been interested in becoming a CNA for a while now and was wondering if anyone had any ideas about where to go for training? I know some places do paid training and some places do free training and some places have you pay for it . . . so if anyone has any experience with the options, I'd be very interested in hearing about it!

Secondly: I routinely have ridiculous colors of hair and I also have two facial piercings. It seems to me that most places are fairly strict about hair color, piercings and uniform. Any recommendations about where to go that may not have such strict requirements? I'm especially looking to work in-home, not in a facility. I'm also interested in doing end of life care.

Any tips, hints or ideas would be very appreciated.

Stanich's hamburgers
So I finally got around to trying the much-lauded Stanich's. I got a regular cheeseburger with fries and a soda.

The burger was excellent. Everything was quite fresh, great bun, cooked medium (hallelujah!) and very enjoyable. I'd go back, except... what the hell is with their fries?? They were overcooked on the outside to the point of bitterness, yet underdone on the inside to the point where they were actually tough to chew! They were also sopping with grease. I mean, they were even worse than the fries at McMenamin's, and those oily little shoestrings are NASTY.

Anyway, I'd recommend them for a cheeseburger, but skip the fries.
