Helping in Portland
To keep this short. My New Years Resolution is to volunteer AT LEAST once a week for a good cause...Directly. I don't want to be stuffing damn envelopes asking for money or something stupid like that. I want to do hands on help. So I was wondering if anyone is affiliated with or knows of someone that could really use the help.

OH SNOWS!
It's snowing over here on Barbur Boulevard, just a mile away from the Tigard border.

Snow. Fatty fat fat fat flakes. Probably about an inch. It's so nice.

So now I'm going to go do the Snow Dance, which involves a tank top and boxer shorts and my boyfriend is asleep and is going to miss it.

And so are all you guys, 'cause I don't even have a camera phone.

O RLY
Ron Paul, on the 1992 L.A. riots:

http://groups.google.com/group/soc.culture.african.american/msg/c8668bd3662b0fa5
The Los Angeles and related riots mark a new era in American cultural,
political, and economic life. We now know that we are under assault from
thugs and revolutionaries who hate Euro-American civilization and
everything it stands for: private property, material success for those who
earn it, and Christian morality...

...Regardless of what the media tell us, most white Americans are not
going to believe that they are at fault for what blacks have done to cities
across America. The professional blacks may have cowed the elites, but good
sense survives at the grass roots. Many more are going to have difficultly
avoiding the belief that our country is being destroyed by a group of
actual and potential terrorists -- and they can be identified by the color
of their skin. This conclusion may not be entirely fair, but it is, for
many, entirely unavoidable.

Indeed, it is shocking to consider the uniformity of opinion among
blacks in this country. Opinion polls consistently show that only about 5%
of blacks have sensible political opinions, i.e. support the free market,
individual liberty, and the end of welfare and affirmative action. I know
many who fall into this group personally and they deserve credit--not as
representatives of a racial group, but as decent people. They are,
however, outnumbered. Of black males in Washington, D.C, between the ages
of 18 and 35, 42% are charged with a crime or are serving a sentence,
reports the National Center on Institutions and Alternatives. The Center
also reports that 70% of all black men in Washington are arrested before
they reach the age of 35, and 85% are arrested at some point in their
lives. Given the inefficiencies of what D.C. laughingly calls the "criminal
justice system," I think we can safely assume that 95% of the black males
in that city are semi-criminal or entirely criminal.

(Ron Paul claims this was ghostwritten by a staffer.)

Freedom of Speech and H.R. 1955
(this is really important.... please give it a watch if you have the time!)

Though the authors of H.R. 1955 would likely deny that the bill could be used to crack down on free speech and legitimate political opposition, the talking heads on the main stream networks have made it very clear that they would like this kind of legislation to do just that.
Can H.R. 1955 be used to silence the voices of dissent? Let's have a look.

"Lost" Billboard in SE Portland.
Anyone else seen the Oceanic Air billboard on SE Grand just before the Hawthorne bridge?  I saw it yesterday on my way to work.  Didn't really pay attention to it because it just looked like a normal travel billboard.  Then I blinked and realized it was for Oceanic Air.  Today I drove by it and it had "graffiti" sprayed on it with the web address www.find815.com.

I'm at work so I can't view the site unfortunately.

Has anyone seen this billboard or noticed a 1-800 number on it?

Stupid awesome viral campaigns.

Square Dancing/Line Dancing
I'm searching for a fun individual who knows how to line dance and/or square dance.  I am helping to run a Spring Break Camp for our youth non-profit, and we are looking for a person who could teach a bunch of kids how to do the basics.

The job is a one day commitment ONLY.  It would involve stops at three schools.  Each stop would include a teaching session  roughly 45 minutes long.  Pay negotiable, but generally our other people doing special events get around $75-80 a stop,  Easy way to make $150 bucks in half a day?

Please let me know who I can either contact, or if it is YOU who is interested, what sort of experience you have in dance as well as with kids.

Thanks all!

(We are in the process of contacting granges and local college for dance majors, etc... I'm posting here to see if anyone in DP would like to give it a go, or has a reliable source to refer me to.)

Calling all parents...
As the Parent Resource Education Committee Chair for my son's elementary school PTA - I'm working on setting up some helpful seminars for parents to attend. Being a busy parent, if I'm going to take time out of an evening to attend a school event, I want it to be worthwhile.

I'm sending out a survey to parents this week to gather ideas about what topics they have a desire to learn more about - but more ideas would definitely be helpful.

Thank you!

Gresham Dentistry
Anyone have any good thoughts on dentists in the Gresham area? Yes, I DID look in the archives, but nothing popped up under my search. A lot came up under "dentist," but we're hoping for something close.

Thanks.

Places I have walked in the Portland area:
I have done a lot of walking around the Portland area, over the years.
For example:
I have walked From Orchards to Vancouver.
From Vancouver to Portland
From Portland to Lake Oswego
From Lake Oswego to Oregon City
From Oregon City to Canby
And from Canby to Woodburn

(I have also walked from Portland to Sauvie Island, Portland to Gresham, Gresham to Troutdale, Lake Oswego to Tualatin, and several other walks)

So, by knitting all my walks together, I have walked from Orchards to Woodburn, which is a pretty long stretch of ground to cover.
But, over the years, as far as I can recall, I have never actually walked directly from Portland to Beaverton. That trek over the West Hills has eluded me all these years.
So one thing I am going to do this year is walk from Portland to Beaverton, which really won't be that long of a walk.
But there is a list of other places I have yet to visit on foot, but will soon enough:
Ridgefield! Battle Ground! Camas! Corbett! Boring! Sherwood! Hillsboro! North Plains!
That is one of my missions for 2008. I am going to see all the other parts of Portland!
