Crafty crochet?
So, I'm in the market for a new hat.

Specifically a cheap, well-made hat. Preferably crochet.

Colors is not important, but it should probably be over-sized. The type of beanie you can wear while you sleep to keep the pesky sun out of your eyes. I have a very large window and the sun bothers me when I wake up to blaring light, and broken blinds. Thanks, crappy house!

I realize I could shop Etsy. However, the prices they want for a beanie there are RIDICULOUS, imo. I could make one myself, but I'm lazy.

I figure about $10. I don't want anything fancy. As long as it's well-formed and won't unravel on me, I'm good to go.

Colors I like are generally orange pink and anything bright or obnoxious- I ride the bus so things that make it easier to see me while crossing 212 at 10pm are best.  I'll take what I can get.

So, lovely Portlanders.. which one of you sells your wares on Etsy or some other craft-licious site, and wants to make a local sale? I'll even tell all my best buddies about you, and promise you'll get further business from me if you sell scarves, too. :)

Feel free to comment or message me, or whatever you want to do. I figured I'd try to buy local, without wasting my money on hats from stores that.. just aren't what I want. I'd be happy to come for a fitting, if you're so inclined to make it special, provided it's a day when I'm childless.

you do realize it takes people quite a bit of time to make a hat, not to mention yarn? i'm sure someone here will be willing to do it for $10 as a favor to you, but there's really no need to call the prices people set for their wares on etsy (which are often made with really nice yarn, btw) "ridiculous"...

In my opinion.

That's why I wrote it.

$20 for something that I want isn't worth it. I don't want fancy holy yarn. I want plain basic red heart yarn, preferably as tight as possible while still being floppy. I'm not seriously picky, and that's why I'm not willing to pay $20 for something that material-wise costs like 3 bucks. Basic yarn isn't expensive, and that's all I want. Nothing special.

Like I said, I could make it my self. I choose not to because I'd rather give money to someone else, and save myself the time and effort.

I crochet decently well and a very simple hat like what you're talking about usually takes me about an hour...if you include yarn, gas to get to the craft store and effort you'd be paying minimum wage for your hat.

Just sayin' ;-)

But seriously, it really isn't terribly difficult to crochet a beanie-type hat. All you have to know how to do is a basic chain the size of your head and then crochetting into the chain, leaving out a few stitches every time you go around.

dude, you're retarded.

"oh hai, i want someone to make something special just for me, but i don't respect their time, energy, or the cost of materials! whatever! yarn is cheap! your time is worthless! ...and go!"

For sure. I don't feel like arguing and honestly you can think whatever you want. It doesn't take long, it isn't complicated, and that's what I want to pay. There are plenty on etsy for 6 bucks, I would just rather pay someone local and have it fast.

Lmfao. God then they'd post rants about me on craigslist! God only knows it's bad enough being flamed on livejournal for not wanting to pay an arm for a fucking never ending piece of string.

Oh well, I'll suffer with my glow in the dark one until I can bribe someone or afford to pay half my liver.

the hats that are $6 on Etsy are most likely ones they couldn't sell therefor they listed them cheaper.

As far as I know red heart or other cheap yard is $3.85... and like another person said it takes about a hour. So you want to pay someone $6.15 less then minimum wage?

If you can do it yourself, why don't you... you said you ride the bus, do it on the bus, or you can join the weekly stitch and bitch and do it there!

Because I'm lazy and not the greatest. I'm learning but with my lack of free time it's not really conducive. Rather pay for one that's not going to fall apart the first time I have to hand wash the little bastard.

There's no way minimum wage is 15 dollars an hour. I don't want one of the etsy ones. Figured I'd try here first. If that's what I get then fine but I'd like to wear it sometime this year while it's still cold.

it takes about a hour to make the beani minimum wage is 8.40

so for a $10 beanie minus $3.85 for yarn comes out to 6.15

where are you getting $15 a hour?

forgotten comma after $6.15 makes it seem as though you were saying that it was $6.15 less then minimum wage. typos happen.

to the OP: find a friend who can do you a favor. you're being insulting.

I'm really not intending to be snarky but why not buy a sleep mask to help with the light problem? I sleep with one. This is the one I use and it comes with 2: http://www.amazon.com/Earth-Therapeutics-Therapy-Sleep-Cotton/dp/B001ET7HJI/

Yes these work FABULOUSLY for bright sun shining into your bedroom when you wake up. But you also need something for on the bus, if I am reading correctly...good luck on that. The only ones I buy locally are great - from www.floodclothing.com - or at Saturday market but they are indeed more than you're wanting to spend.

Walmart.
Made in China cheap imports is pretty much the only way to go, if a 10$ handmade crochet hat is considered "ridiculous".
