Fancy Man Stuff
My special guy just found out that his office Christmas party has a "jacket and tie" dress code. Neither of us are snappy dressers, so he needs to go shopping for a basic, classic, quality black dress jacket. I'm thinking Mario's, with Nordstrom as a backup plan? Any thoughts on where to get those classic occasional pieces for the modern man's wardrobe?

Try Collier in Pioneer Place- Brent is an artist. His stuff will generally be cheaper than Mario's (but still designer etc) but generally way cooler. :)

Thanks for the recommendation -- you are SPOT ON. We went to Collier first, but they didn't have the ability to do an emergency alteration job today, so he ended up getting a suit at Mario's (for twice as much, and not quite as cool). But we both liked the stuff they had at Collier quite a bit better, so next time nice men's attire is needed, we're going there!

how much are you looking to throw down? mario's is going to wind up being $400 or up, probably--a friend of mine manages their customer service dept.

Men's Wearhouse, Nordstrom Rack, ROSS Dress for Less, Marshall's... those might be worth a shot.

I usually shop at Men's Wearhouse for my suit-and-tie stuff. Not the hippest place, but for an office it's fine. I did find a black 3-button suit there, which is "fashion forward" in the business world.

Yeah but if they're looking for fancy, they're probably interested in something that lasts several years due to good materials, construction & fitting, so the other stores in this list are probably more appropriate......

Honestly, if you only wear it once a year at the company holiday party, a cheap jacket from Target will probably hold up just fine.

You need to be going to crazier holiday parties!

I didn't see where it was stipulated that it had to last several years, or that other store suggestions weren't encouraged. Or even that it had to be "fancy." So I was just chiming in like all the rest.

In this economy, I'm all about Target. And the clothes I've bought there have lasted just fine with more use than that sport coat will likely see.

Thanks! I agree... I mean, we could have canvassed the Goodwills in the area, but he's not quite as big of a fan of secondhand as I am, and he ended up with a terrific quality garment that really fits and really looks great. :)

If I were you I'd give both Nordstrom's and Saks Fifth Avenue a shot. All desginer clothing (even Spring and Summer 2009 stuff) is on sale. You'll only be paying a little more than you would be at Ross but you'd be getting quality stuff that will last you years.

Nordstrom Rack, if he's a mainstream size, is a good option. For basic stuff, Sears or Penney's are still good options, especially if he's just looking for a black jacket - you can get 100% wool for under $100, if you hit the sales.

there's a discount jacket-and-tie type place on taylor and 6th or 7th. i forget the name of it ("mr." something maybe, but it's basically like a thrift store for fancyware.

Men's Warehouse helped me find something for my cousin's wedding that hung right on a large guy like me. Good people there, I reccommend them.
