TELL ME ABOUT GIRDLES
so, portland, i have a potbelly and i slouch. i have worn spanx high waisted thingaroos and donna karan power panties (i cringe at the nomenclature, but they WORK DAMN IT). do any of you wear any more old school shape wear, specifically for the tummy? or just something different? i want stuff i can wear all day, most days, not just for a couple hours on a special occasion. oh baby on broadway carries one line of retro-y girdles, but it's not really what i'm looking for-- i want something that doesn't just look pretty. (it can look pretty. nothing against that.) i know very little about girdles/corsets/whatever and have no desire to wear them not-under-clothes. what works, what doesn't and where do you ladies and gentlemen buy it/have it made locally? bonus points for stuff that helps with posture. i don't want to shop online for this kinda stuff. department stores frighten me.

I had a girdle after I broke a rib and found out a girdle and a rib belt did practically the same thing. I found it was excellent for my posture and have been considering getting one again.

Unfortunately the best place I've seen them is at Sears; still a limited collection, but pretty much the exact old-lady girdle I've been looking for.

My problem: I am /dying/ for another corset. Preferably one I can wear outside, Ren Faire style (bodice, really). Trouble is they're either so flimsy that they don't do jack for shaping or else they're bloody expensive. Plus, I have nobody to help me dress, so front-lacing is a must. ;) Any idea where to find one both sturdy and affordable? For a whale? (2X-3X)

Well, you may well be the only person in America to think so, but thank you. ;) Interestingly enough, I would heartily disagree with my own statements were they to come from someone else. When applied to my own body, however, the standards are completely changed. >:p

If I actually had halfway decent boobs and not quite so much belly, it might help... like, actual CURVES instead of just this belly from hell.

yeah, I have wide shoulders, big belly and a c cup (I wear a size 22) and much thinner legs and practically no hips. It's hard being an inverted triangle with a big belly. BUT..still not a whale. :D

portland is such a skewed place. the minute i stopped fitting into my size 4 jeans, i was fatter than most of the boys on belmont.

average american woman is a size 14.

i wear a d cup and accumulate weight more like a dude (chest, belly, front) than a woman. this is what they call being apple shaped. it's just not typical of our culture.

*nod* I'm still in southern oregon (moving to portland hopefully in next year or so) and grew up in las vegas, where it is more of the "average" american style..have you checked out Fat Fancy or anything like that? There are some fat-positive groups in portland to check out, just so you don't feel so alone. Some of the people are activists and get a little bit zealous, but in general it just promotes healthy living (at any size) and not putting your self-worth onto your pant size. [info]fatshionista might be a good place to ask about portland groups/etc.

hahah yeah.... I have metabolic syndrome, they tell me my insulin resistance causes the belly fat. I guess up to 20% of people have it and don't know!

control-top pantyhose with the legs cut off - they work mostly for smoothing things out & holding a little in. Probably not as structured as an actual girdle, but they're also super-comfy. Good for everyday use, cheap too.

yeah, that's pretty much what spanx and the donna karan thingies are. spanx are really, really good, actually.

i highly recommend the rago waist cincher sold at mybabyjo.com. you can get it other places online but i have no idea about getting it locally. i have a size 30 - my waist is 33" and it takes me down to 30", smooths my stomach, and forces me to stand up straighter. i've danced in it and biked (short distances) in it and it's pretty comfy. i know a ton of girls who wear these and other rago shapewear products and are happy with them! rago is REAL shapewear modeled after the vintage stuff, although it is pretty as well.

TOTALLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR! thanks so much!

do you know anybody who has the corsetlette? i am EXTREMELY apple shaped. 34d (sometimes wear a 32 band size) but generally wear 12-14 in women's pants/skirts. i don't know if ordering my bra size would mean it wouldn't fit over my larger lower body.

i know some ladies who are pretty happy with the corselette, and then others who have had "quad-boob" issues with it! if you can find someone locally who carries it i'd suggest trying it on first.

oh yes and they do make the longline bra look so positively bitchin' anyway (bullet bras! how i love you!); i should get both and be able to switch things up.

yeah, and fyi.... my cinch comes up to my bra-line and transitions pretty smoothly. people who are long-waisted probably won't have this happen though!

having a pot belly and very weak back, I'd recommend Pilates to help with posture. foundation garments will only do so much to help with that if there's no core strength.

I know you said you don't wanna shop online for this, but if it comes down to it, www.underworks.com have some things like what you're lookin' for.

I buy from them for chest binders (I am ftm) and their products rock and usually arrive in a very timely fashion.
