Jobs jobs jobs!
So, my husband is the cafe manager at Grand Central Bakery in Irvington and due to one of his awesomest employees being promoted, he is going to be hiring in the next couple weeks.

He hasn't put an ad on Craigslist yet, so I wanted to give a heads-up to any interested job seekers. There isn't a ton of turnover, pay is decent (between $9-11 for retail staff) and supplemented nicely by tips. The cafe is open from 7AM-6PM, seven days a week. The crew is super responsible and hard working and my husband seems to be regarded as a pretty awesome boss.

Brad is the store Tuesday through Saturday, generally from 8AM-4PM. Don't take your resume in at lunchtime though, everyone will hate you and you probably won't get hired.

No clue. It's probably rather flexible at this point because people are getting ready to go back to school.

Cool. Mind if I tell my brother about this? He's got loads of food experience, and flexible hours would be great since he's in school himself.

Go for it. My husband is all about making it work for people who are fast, reliable and good employees.

I'll vouch for Brad being a pretty awesome boss, as I bake there two days a week. Most of the people who work there are pretty cool too.

Yes! I was a full-time server for over a year. I would imagine that works as sufficient experience?

Also, I have blue/green hair. Would that be an issue?

Rad!

As far as I know, it's not an issue. It's a rather mellow atmosphere as far as that stuff.

Would a person with absolutely no restaurant experience, who is starting culinary school (Baking & Pastry Arts) in a few months, have a chance of being hired?

Well, I think having customer service/retail is more probably more important than restaurant experience. They aren't a full-service place, so as long as your fast and level-headed I think it would be worth applying. You definitely just have to be a people person otherwise it would drive you bonkers.

Lots of icon love. :)

Also, what amount of experience is he looking for, and what's the policy about colored hair & piercings?

Thanks! As far as I understand, the policy about hair/piercings/tattoos is very lenient.

Does you husband have any tips for me?

I've just emailed my resume for the Cafe Manager position open at the Grand Central Bakery in Sellwood. Would you or your husband have any helpful tips to share about how to land an interview? Is it bad to be pesky and "show up" at the location to introduce myself to the general manager? Seriously, thanks in advance for any info you might have. I've just moved here from out of state and my restaurant management experience is impressive...but it's also about 6 years old :((. I'm hoping it won't count against me.

Hmm, I think the best thing is writing a good cover letter...or a follow-up. They really like people to be familiar with Grand Central and be able to be familiar with the reality of the store. They are incredible busy...all the time. I think enthusiasm is important and I don't know that going in to introduce yourself is a bad thing.

If you do, you'd want to go to the NW location, which they refer to as the "Sawtooth" store. It's not far off 23rd, you can get the exact address from their website. You'd probably want to ask for Marissa.

If you want, I can e-mail you the cover letter my husband used when he applied for the job.
