because temping sucks.
Hey, me again. I'm dreading having to go apply with agencies again, so I figure at least I can find out who the decent ones are.

What are some good *permanent* job agencies? Most places do primarily temping, and every time I go in saying I want a permanent job, they usually try to shoehorn me into taking a temp gig instead. DO NOT WANT.

Aerotek is supposed to have that kinda thing. And if you are in school or have graduated in the last couple of years, CampusPoint can hook you up. The nice thing about CP is that each job is upfront about whether it's short-term, long-term contract or permanent, so there's no surprises.

Boly Welch works well for a lot of people. They haven't been able to find me a job yet, though. You can specifically say you only want direct hire and no temping, and there's no pressure to do temp work.

true. I went in and they actually have two separate departments. You don't even have to TALK to the temp department.

I love them because they might be hooking me up immediately.

Most temp agencies want to take you for a test drive or two before they offer you a permanent placement. At least, that's how it was when I was temping way back when during a recession.

But I temped for 3 years already, cant they just call and verify that i'm a good employee? yeah, i guess not.

Why should they? The supply of temps is higher than the supply of jobs right now, I think. I mean, you can run your career however you like, I'm just sayin', it's not unheard of for them to give you a crap job first to see if you actually show up.

Agreed. In today's job market you have to realize that you've got to present yourself well and sometimes that means temping to prove yourself to an employer. If you want a good job, you've got to present yourself as a GREAT employee.

It sucks when you get in to a great company and they keep saying stuff like 'we should totally hire you' or 'you should apply for this position' and then you apply and they forget you exist. But then they remember you again when they need some scut work done that they can't be arsed to do themselves.

Yeah, I'm looking at you, Yakima.

:p

OHSU is pulling that shit on me. They have a position I'd be qualified too, but they won't even give me a chance, the douches!

IMO, this disqualifies that company for "great" status.

You think? I always tended to think maybe I was the misfit when that happened...that it would be sour grapes to blame them. But since a rather disastrous experience with another local company, I'm wondering if it's really them.

Preferred Personnel found me a temp gig that became permanent... as permanent as jobs ever are. :/

Temping is a pain, but most agencies expect you to take temp-to-hire gigs to show that you're a good li'l doormat. Even most supposedly permanent positions have a trial period of thirty to ninety days, anyhow.

If you want so permanent that in a couple of years you'll be ready to shoot yourself, I heartily recommend concentrating on public sector jobs. Metro, Mult. Co., City of Portland, and the like. Be prepared to surrender your hair, though.

I know there's also Medical Staffing Network, they are national but have an office downtown.

Another one to consider is Kelly Services. They have the Nike contract, and Nike will sometimes bogart the temps for permanent positions. It happened to my aunt... :D

Well, my experience is entirely office work, but I'm open to pretty much anything at this point, except for call center or heavy reception.

I feel for you...I know it's tough these days

When I moved to Portland, I didn't want to take just any job, so I temped for about 8 months, mostly through NW Staffing. They were great to me. They found me something within 1 week! In the beginning, I was temping in one dept but left after 5 months because I was bored beyond belief. I went and did a project for a few months elsewhere. When that was done, I contacted the agency again. They got me a better temp position, which led to a referral in another dept for a perm position. And I LOVE my job!

I've worked in the Staffing industry for many years, so I am sure it helped to understand and know how to work around the system.

I don't want to be the the meanie here, but as much as Portland is liberal...I don't think the blue hair is gonna help you. When I was hiring folks, I could have cared less about dyed hair, but my clients sure did.

Still, I would contact NW Staffing. Also I have always had positive interactions with Express.

I also had good experiences with them (NW Staffing). They actually listened to what I wanted and mostly made pretty good matches for me. Also the other temps that staffed me with there were always up on which agencies had jobs, were good/bad to work with.

I started at the job I have now through Northwest Staffing. I temped with them before I went back to school and after I graduated I went back and they found me a temp-to-hire position within a month. They knew I was looking for something permanent but also sent me on some temporary assignments until a job came along that was a good fit.

I will agree with the above poster and say that having blue hair is going to seriously limit the placements you'll be eligible for. The office I'm in is pretty relaxed about visible tattoos and nose piercings, but they draw the line at "alternative" hair colors.

I had a few friends who had good luck getting permanent benefit eligible positions through Adecco, but personally, I don't have any experience with them.

Try these guys: http://www.dentalmedicalstaffinginc.com/

They're the temp agency my office always uses. I do know that they are a place where businesses can hire permanent staff.

Also, Apple One Employment Service used to flood our fax machine with resumes when we were hiring. You might have some luck with them.
