bikes and naked ladies
Happy May DPers-

I have a few "shout outs" if you will. First, if you live in Brooklyn area and happen to be a cyclist, go to the guys at Brooklyn Bike Shop (3432 S.E. Milwaukie Avenue, cross street SE Rhine, I believe). They've done some minor tune ups on my bike, most recently they stopped my front brake from honking like a goose, free of charge. Plus they're just plain nice guys. I can't promise the free of charge thing, but hop in there if you need anything and check them out.

Secondly, if you like vegetarian foodstuffs and strippers, go to Casa Diablo (formerly Pirate's Tavern). As the owner, Johnny Diablo, so eloquently said, "we put the meat on the pole, not on the plate." Try the burger and fries combo or the taquitos and make sure to exercise proper strip club etiquette (one dollar per song, and any extra you feel the girls deserve)!

And thanks to all who gave me hair salon/stylist suggestions. =)

I think that your second point is funny. One of the reasons why people love Portland.

I don't want to pick a fight, but...
Ok. Maybe I don't mind picking a fight since I'm sick with the flu and in a bad mood.

As the owner, Johnny Diablo, so eloquently said, "we put the meat on the pole, not on the plate."

Something about that sentence pisses me off. It sounds to me like he has more respect for food animals than for dancing girls. I find strip clubs tacky at best, but I usually keep silent because I'm not pro censorship either, nor do I believe that it is wise or ethical to legislate morality.

Heh, don't worry about picking a fight. I was pretty anti- strip club too before I went there but the friend I went with was friends with a few of the girls (who were hilarious) and I met Johnny too. He seems like a decent guy who wouldn't let anything happen to the girls. The sentence is tacky, agreed, but it's a bit taken out of context. Basically, he knows it's a weird thing to combine, but he wants to get vegan and vegetarian lifestyles out there for folks who might not usually try it.
Anyway, the place probably isn't for you but maybe there are some other folks here who'd like to check it out.

you are one of the only people to refer to Johnny Diablo as a "decent guy". I've never met him, but the overriding consensus of the interwebs is rather negative of this person. plus, I believe that place is now for sale.

I've heard the same thing about him.

(negative things, that is - not that he's even a little bit "decent")

Whoa, hadn't heard any of that. And I am only going off of one meeting with him. *shrugs* Maybe he's a jerk who was just happening to have an especially nice day.

Sorry. Couldn't resist that slight modification. :p

Also, given that common practice is for women to shell out before they can even get onstage and earn their pay, I think there's some morality, or ethics, that should be legislated. Not talking whether or not to take off a g-string here, either.

I'm actually vaguely peeved because- if I don't think a girl did a good job dancing- I don't want to have to shell out an "etiquette dollar". In fact, that's why one of my friends got tossed out of Cabaret: The girl on stage, quite frankly, was the least sexy dancer we'd ever seen, and he didn't want to give her his last dollar. So she got us kicked.

A tip is for a good performance, not just for standing there and being a lump of naked girl-meat.

Eh, yeah. I'm generally not a huge fan of the obligatory dollar. We didn't throw anything out for the dancer who didn't even acknowledge us.
I know they have to make their money and do a pay out, but that's a bit ridiculous that the dancer got you kicked out because of a buck.

It really sucked, especially as we couldn't figure out what in the world was going on, AND out of fear my friend still left the dollar, even as the bouncer was escorting him (and me, by being attached to his other hand) out. But, then, I've heard Cabaret has a reputation for doing that stuff.

Also, I'm feeling sort of sickly today so anything that I would find generally annoying is, right now, the Worst Thing Evar. :)

Yeah that sentence was pretty transparently gross. On the other hand, how refreshing to have the misogyny so upfront, instead of having to dig for examples. It's like "see, I've been saying for ages that strip clubs reduce women to meat...now you know what I'm talking about."

So this is a excellent post for a variety of reasons, but mainly because it is about bikes and naked ladies. Great Skip James song too.
