warning
just a friendly warning for those of you parking downtown:

parking enforcement, which seems to have been out in force a lot more than usual lately, has started writing tickets for other things than parking.

most notably, if you do not have a front license plate, you will get a ticket.

you have been warned.

Just what we need, the matching license police.

Yeah, what's up with this whole "enforcement of the law" thing, anyways?

The idea of Portland police doing some policing is kind of hard to wrap the mind around.

LOL One license plate is issued to mopeds, motorcycles, trailers, campers, antique vehicles, and special interest vehicles. So you don't need a front plate. =P

I've noticed parking enforcement more active lately.

But if you don't have a front plate, that's just dumb.

personally, I don't even have a front mounting bracket, but that's neither here nor there.

I take my chances and pay the fine, this was just a friendly heads up for others.

according to this:
http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/DMV/docs/traffic_newsletter/ATT1.pdf
the fine is $97! (standard class D violation fine)

That page shows you ALL of the vehicle based fines - pretty exhaustive! which brings me to a fun calculation:

I've been pulled over for speeding 15 over, for speeding and driving on wrong side of road, for not having a front license plate, for driving at night without my headlights on, for having a busted right headlight, for not using my turn signal whilst changing lanes (damn newberg cops,) and for trespassing onto private property.

Grand total, I paid $50 for all. (talked my way out of all but my very first speeding ticket.) Had I not been able to talk my way out, I'd have paid $145 + $242 + $97 + $97 + $242 + $97 + $97 + (whatever trespassing would have gotten me, its not in the list) = more than $1017.

Perhaps I should start paying attention to the law. My luck will run out soon enough.

I went to court once to pay an improper passing ticket (passing on the right with my tires in a bike lane back in '95).

the guy before me had:

Speeding, while Driving under the influence, on a suspended license, with no insurance, in a car that wasn't his, with the headlights off at night, pulling a trailer with no license or lights, and wasn't wearing a seat belt.

The judge was like "give me a second, I need a calculator for this."

When he told the guy how much it was, he said, "I can't afford that."

The judge was like, "Then you go to jail."

He said, "Can I make payments?"

The judge said, "I'm trying to make it so you can't afford to break the law. So no. No payments. Pay the fine or you can be our guest."

Yup, we got ticketed for staying too long in a 2-hour zone, along with a half dozen other people on the block. They are definitely out there.

Also, all the Zone L signs (~19th Avenue, north of West Burnside) were taken down in fall '07, giving everyone restriction-free parking, but they're now back up. So it's 2 hours or a permit again up here.

They are up for sporty season at PGE Park so the people who live around there don't get fucked.

But it doesn't start until April 1st, so park as long as you want until then.

my "bumper" is about 1/2 of an inch with an airdam in it, actually. if i were to mount it there, it would drag against the ground.

personally, i don't care, and have and will continue to pay tickets. the post was just meant as a simple warning to others that might care.

and yes, my car is stock. factory. no modifications.

Did you report it? More than likely it ended up on a stolen car, which could lead to more problems for you in the future.
