Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Because I feel like ranting
(and proctrastinating writing my thesis)

I have a child - age 6 - who is very precocious and can be quite energetic. I love kids and plan on having more some day.

That said.

When I'm sitting in a completely serene and quiet coffee shop trying to hammer out my (long overdue) introduction and research proposal while my angelic boyfriend watches said child at home, it thoroughly SUCKS to have two suburbanite moms bring their pride and joys (all 4) running through the coffee shop to bang on the piano and then sit RIGHT. IN. FRONT. OF. ME.

This is a huge coffee shop by comparison to most - and there are several other nooks and crannies to choose from with glorious games and chairs for 4.

Why must they choose the area right in front of me and smile gaily at me as if I am sitting smelling roses and not trying to THINK.

Thus ensues a mental battle of "it's a free coffee shop world and anyone can choose to sit where they like" vs. "coffee shops are no place for children".

I moved. But it still irked me.

Thus begins your daily Pet Peeve post. What peeves you?

People who study in coffee shops instead of going to a library.

I'm also irritated by idiots and opportunists. And sporks.

Agreed. Coffee shops aren't playgrounds, but they're also not libraries, conference rooms, or anyone's personal study, den, or hideaway.

I'm personally peeved when I use a coffee shop for its actual historical purpose--drinking coffee and chatting with a friend--and some idiot with a laptop glares at us the whole time because he thinks he's at the library.

As a person writing a highly ambitious thesis, my best bit of advice is to get out of the coffee shop. Really. You will not get much done without an area that is conducive to academic writing.

Choose the 4th floor of the library. And I agree with you that coffee shops are no places for children, but neither are they suitable for academic writing.

My Pet peeve is when I am in a hurry, or even when Im not, and pull into Winco or any other store parking lot, and some tool is sitting there blocking up the entire traffic flow waiting for a parking spot that is not currently available. Hello? They are still strapping in their kids, and then have a full shopping cart to unload. They wont be moving for at least 5 minutes. Drive a little farther and take the space 5 places down. It wont hurt your lazy ass to walk a little more to the store.

Have a nice friday!

I don't like when people bring their kids pretty much anywhere not meant for children. I understand, as parents, sometimes you have no choice. But some places it's like COME ONE. Movies for one. Bringing kids to kids movies is fine, but babies and toddlers? They won't ever remember the damn movie. I hate going to the movies because there is always inevitably, no matter what kind of movie it is, someone who brings a baby and the baby starts screaming and the damn parent doesn't have the courtesy to take the baby to the restroom and change it or feed it.

Another is restaurants, more expensive ones, like benihana. Kids are such picky eaters, why waste the money getting them something you can pay a dollar for at McDonalds?

But...I hate kids, so my opinion on these matters are completely biased.

when i lived in new york, i used to sometimes go to this tiny cafe owned by a frenchwoman. there were 2 signs posted in the cafe. one was "no cellphones" and the other was something along the lines of "if your child is loud and obnoxious and cannot behave, please take them outside!"

we went to the theater to see 30 Days of Night which I think anyone who's seen it can agree, is a horrifically violent movie. A family with no less than four young children (6-10 yrs is the range we'd have guessed) came traipsing in and sat down two rows behind us. We cringed as they proceeded to act foolish, loud and obnoxious through out the credits and the first part of the movie...but we were more upset when the poor little things fell completely silent once the horror began. Two of them bawled through most of the movie. And I'd wager all four of the little buggers were permanently scarred...I know I was. Why on earth would anyone bring a child to such a violent movie? even if you didn't realize how bad it was going to be (if the R rating didn't tip you off that is) wouldn't you still have gotten up and left when someone had their head ripped off and jammed on a stick?

People who park their cars in the fire lane. I can understand if you're pulling up to pick-up someone who just walked out of the store, but parking there while someone takes forever to shop in the store? Gah! Makes me wish I had a laser gun or something.

It bugs the hell out of me when someone will approach the deli counter and take a number - when there are no other customers waiting.

I was feeling all confused, thinking I'd somehow missed your post, when I finally realized that this is in DP. I only saw it because I had to switch out out Gus' email account to get to mine.

Oh, but I agree with you. And to me, it's not even so much an issue of bringing them to the coffee shop. It's the larger commentary on a parenting style that allows a child to just run like a hellion. I once had a kid knock my drink over (thank goodness I was without laptop and my texts were somehow spared) while pretending to be an airplane. And the mom was like, "Oh Aiden, you need to be careful!" Thankfully the barista took pity on me and made me a new drink.

Now that I think about it, my pet peeve of the week is as follows:

Somebody who posts into a thread about a cause or event with the refrain, "But there are so many other things that are soooooo much more important than this ? Why are you posting about THIS ?!"

Tch.

Hey, the folks who think some other cause is more important should be writing about it, not getting on somebody else's back for a thoroughly human inability to be in a thousand places at once.

Recently someone brought their toddler in a giant stroller to class. The kid was relatively quiet, but the stroller took up the whole lane between rows of seats and blocked the door, and they littered graham cracker crumbs and cheerios everywhere.

Times being what they are now, I'm just glad the mom didn't start breastfeeding the kid right there.

Big pet peeves:

1.) Those annoying charity panhandlers downtown. "Excuse me, I don't know you from Adam, but please give us money for our cause right here....hello???" And there's one of them on *every* corner, so you get hit by five of them on one walk downtown.

2.) Dirty smelly young people. It might be me, but I have an aversion to people who smell or wear dirty clothes. I understand mentally ill older homeless people being like that - they can't help it. But if you're a young person from a middle-class background, you know better, especially if you're a picky alterna-vegan. No, it doesn't prove your street cred to smell...

I hate people that talk on their cell phones about STDs, baby mamas, or anything similarly awkward to have to overhear on the bus. Also, I abhor people who pull out in front of oncoming traffic when they're just going to make a left turn less than 15 ft from where they've pulled out from, as if it would have killed them to cut people off just so they could make their precious left turn 15 seconds earlier. Also, it sucks having to brake rapidly for these cretins.
