Saquatch! Music Festival
I hear that the lineup for Sasquatch! Music Festival was announced today. Anyone know what bands are playing?

I'm a NW newb so this is the first year I've heard of this so how much are tickets, what is the venue like, etc?

Venue is probably the most picturesque places to see a concert. And I mean anywhere. Although you bake in the sun for about 12 hours and the facilities get a little ripe. Definately think about burning during the day and then getting chilly at night. Tickets about 2 years ago were $35 for festival seating if I remember correctly. Bring your own food and smuggle in your own booze.

Thirded.
I forget the bill at the moment, but I don't remember Sasquatch ever NOT having bands I'd love to see.

I heard the venue was really hot and miserable, which is funny, because I figured being located in the PNW was a plus over Coachella, which typically features a similar line-up.

Ahhhh but Coachella is SUPER fun, even with the insanely hot weather!

R.E.M., Modest Mouse, The Cure, Death Cab for Cutie, The Flaming Lips, Michael Franti and Spearhead, MIA, Built to Spill, The Presidents of the United States of America, Tegan and Sara, The Kooks, Flight of the Conchords, The Blakes, The Hives, The Cops, Cold War Kids.....

that's the lineup released this morning so there's still a lot of bands yet to be announced. Venue is hot, although 2 years back or so it rained and hailed like crazy and there is NO cover there. and it's freezing at night. Fires are not allowed at the camp sites so you can't really cook anything. They've changed the festival from 2 to a 3 day festival and I think this year they're keeping it at 3. Tickets for the whole thing were around $150? Day passes I think were at $60. But those are ballpark guestimates.

It was said over the radio this morning when I came in to work so I just googled in and it was listed on a few different blogs, including the Sasquatch blog. If you check their website now there's some more bands. At noon they released some more, including Ghostland Observatory which im excited about.

Oh shit son. Flight of the Conchords and the Cure? liZ will make me take her. The Gorge is about 5 hours from Portland, very very boring drive once you get past the gorge. I saw a Lollapalooza and the Cure there back in the day; it's pretty but kind of a pain in the ass.

i totally disagree. there are some boring parts, but there are a lot of really beautiful areas you pass, with views of mountains and various different types of terrain/landforms.

I went about 5 years ago and really enjoyed seeing the Flaming Lips play at sunset in front of the gorgeous Gorge. It was magical and I wasn't even smoking that day!

However, it's like any festival where they overcharge for food/water. And when I went, it was only a 1 day affair with 2 stages and it wasn't hot, but the usual NW cloudy day with few showers. I imagine it probably will have more people there, too.

not only this but, despite all the many many wonderful things about the festival, they have the fucking worst food of any festival i've ever been to (and i've been to coachella, pitchfork music festival, bonnaroo, and lollapalooza). not only are there not very many appetizing options, but if you have any food restrictions (vegan/vegetarian/preference for things that don't taste like shit), you will have some difficulty. i expect overpriced food at such festivals, but it's so much worse when you pay $8 for something your 6-year old brother could have done a better job making.

I believe it. I don't even remember what we ate there, but I remember being pissed off over the water and I don't think there were many food options. It was the last outdoor concert I went to because I'm old and cranky and can't stand it. I'd rather go see a band in a small club.

This is perhaps the most punishing venue I've ever been to.

Two years ago, I was laying in the grass, putting on my third application of suntan lotion, thinking how I wished I had brought cooler clothes, then the skies opened up, and in the span of 20 minutes, I was freezing, being pelted with hail and freezing rain, watching drunk canadians "poncho surfing" down the hail strewn hills, wishing I had brought some kind of warmer clothes.

Both years I've been, the main stage has been shut down due to weather related concerns for a while.

Remember to pack your parka, and your bikini. You'll need them both. During the same hour.

haha it's true. when the sun is out, you''' be really hot and wish you brought lighter clothes. at night, you'll get really cold and wish you had a heavier jacket.

The Gorge will kick your ass. You will get sunstroke only to literally freeze your ass and get windburn mere hours later. The cops are notoriously harsh (Trespassing ticket in '96 for pulling over onto a field less than 5 feet off the two lane road) and it's in the middle of nowhere. Also, it's very common for it to rain up there on Memorial Day. I have spent almost every M.Day up there since I was 12 and it's rained like all but 3 of them.

That said, it's one of the most beautiful venues anywhere. These are from Sasquatch last year...

Check the wind blowing the trees..there was no music for almost 3 hours.

Yeah, we aren't overly fussed about this year's line-up. Last year Interpol and The Beastie Boys coupled with my parents living an hour away and agreeing to babysitting was worth the ticket prices and fighting Memorial Day traffic.

I've been sweating the lineup as I had tickets for The Cure in Seattle last fall and they cancelled but now they're headlining this.

I still haven't decided if I will go or not because I'm not driving 5 hours there and back so I'd camp but I don't know if it's worth it - even though I'll kick myself if I don't see The Cure AGAIN!

Ladytron is playing here that weekend. Not even close I know but it's here...

I'm not sure why nobody's just gone to the website:

http://sasquatchfestival.com/2008/

I just googled it, and it popped right up. Then I clicked on the links at the wikipedia site, and they all redirected to that. Maybe it just came up?

Anyway, I've never been for this, but if you want to stay for all 3 days and buy now, it's about $150, plus I think $100 for "camping". Plus your food, etc. Having been there only once before, I remember it as being hot, miserable, with the sun in my eyes for most of the concert. Definitely a beautiful area, though. The campers looked miserable; my friend and I split a hotel room in the nearby town for about $10 more than what we would have had to pay to camp. I dunno, maybe I'm getting old, but driving 5 hours to be uncomfortable for 3 days and spend most of a paycheck to be overstimulated by crowds and too tired and dehydrated to really enjoy the bands I want to see seems... not worth it to me, although I would really love to see Dan the Automator and a few others.
