Visiting Portland for First Time
Hey all. Wow, this is a busy community...nice.

In a couple months I am gonna visit Portland for the first time. Everyone I like who has been there says it's a great city and I'll love it. I am going to check out Powell's, and I have other places written down, some touristy and others "off the beaten path."

I am still looking for more recommendations on what to see/where to go/what to do, though. I'll mostly be Downtown, but plan on visiting other areas too, 'course.

Anyways, here is some stuff I am interested in, and if you see something I write and think, "Oh, she should go here..." please let me know. And if we have similar interests, please add me to your friends list or mail me. I use my journal for business purposes, but also write about a bit of everything.

Good coffee
Internet cafes
Goth/Industrial music and clubs
BDSM
Literature
Trees
Bodies of water
Modern Art
Indie Films
Open mic
Indie music
Unique architecture
Sushi
Healthy foods
Magick
Places where friendly, open-minded, fun, and intelligent people hang out

Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

Hit a public mass at Sekhet-Maat Lodge if you get the chance. They're held every Sunday at 3PM (sharp).

The RCDC has you covered for BDSM. Also, be sure to check out Spartacus, a nice big sex/BDSM shop, just a couple blocks from Powell's. While you're in that area, Bush Garden has great, fairly reasonably-priced sushi within walking distance.

You can't throw a rock without hitting good coffee around here. There are several Stumptown coffee shops that can't be beat, and in my experience 9 out of 10 indie cafes are awesome (and have wi-fi).

Good coffee
Internet cafes
Trees

Everything else is pretty easy to find, too. For sushi, my recommendation is Yoko's on SE Gladstone near 28th. For open mic, I recommend singing with Karaoke from Hell, a live band that knows 300 songs and will back you up on Monday nights at Dante's. For water, I like to bring my pup to Oaks Bottom at the Willamette river, although there's lots of nice waterfront spots along the W and the Columbia.

I could go on, but I gotta work :) Have a great visit.

Internet cafes

really? i know there's backspace, but what others are there? and i'm assuming by "internet cafe", she means a cafeish place that has multiple computer terminals where once can use internet, usually for an hourly fee.

Ah, you may be right. In my laptop-owning myopia, I was just thinking that she was referring to places with wireless.

Considering it looks like she manages a number of web sites (looking at her profile), I'll bet dollars to donuts that coffee-cafes with wireless access are what she wants, but you may be right. If you are, I can only think of a couple I've seen. A gas station on SE 28th and Holgate, a cafe on Se 42 (or so) and Hawethorn... I'm sure there's more, but I don't know for sure.

Thanks very much! I'm definitely gonna hit up the museum. The Fez, I haven't yet heard of. I heard of Legacy Mt. Tabor and the Hive though. And someone else recommended Backspace a few days ago. Anyhoo, yes, thank you!

Good coffee is everywhere - you don't have to settle for Starbucks here.

Backspace is a good Internet cafe, as is Fuel on NE Alberta. Most every coffee shop has Wi-Fi as well.

Powell's has been mentioned - also good are Reading Frenzy (zines, small press and alternative publications, on Oak near Powell's), CounterMedia (odd stuff, including erotica/porn, also on Oak).

Hmmm...go to the Portland Mercury website for art, film and music listings. There's a *lot* to do around here - Portland is a good incubator for independent creative works.

For BDSM, the RCDG has been mentioned - also, Darklady is the local maven of all things sexual.

BDSM-wise, if you happen to be here March 28-30, you could consider Kinkfest (a big all-weekend BDSM event). There's also a "fetish night" at Berbati's Pan on the 3rd Sunday of every month, which is a mix of goth & BDSM.

I've been there once. I was pleased to know that they allow nudity in the dungeon area, even if not sex. My kind of parties are anything goes. the time I went, they had a St. Andrews' cross, another kind of cross I can't picture right now, a kneeling bench, and a pulley system with a suspension ring.

Hmmm . . . I probably shouldn't say things like that when I know I have a stalker or two who have followed me here . . .

We must have "Caucasian weirdo magnet" written across us somehow.

lol, I'm afraid so. Everyone who's ever told me about how "cool" Portland is, is a caucasian weirdo. Bookworms, writers, gothy people, alternative lifestyle people...not sure how it happened, but yeah. Sowwy!

Ah I knew I'd seen you before.

There aren't too many internet cafes here but there is a downtown wide free wifi. So bring a laptop and anything is an internet cafe.

Actually instead of just listing off stuff I mean really we have everything you listed, quite a bit of it in all aspects. Your profession (both of them) fits in with this city quite easily. We have a very large tech & sex industry so meeting people should go fairly smooth for you.

Try www.wweek.com for various listings, to give you an idea ahead of time of places and shows. Good luck with the impending visit.

Embers (NW Broadway and Couch) on a Wednesday night, the back room has goth/industrial/etc. music. It's free to get in and the drinks aren't too costly. They're cash-only but they have an ATM.

Multnomah Falls is fun if you have a car. Forest Park is bus-accesible and has lots of trees and hiking.

Grab a copy of the Willamette Week or Mercury (they're both online too) and I think a couple of places have Fetish nights now.

Mult falls is GORGEOUS. Photo op. I've been through there. I think it would be nice to actually bike through once . . .
