Are you supposed to tip the gas station attendants?

I'd say no. They're getting paid to do what in nearly any other state you could do for free. They're making money already, and there's no art to pumping your gas well, so points for style or tips would be nil.

Nope.

Even in states where you have a choice between self and full, tipping attendants is not the norm.

Though, if the weather is *really* shitty sometimes people will hand over an extra buck or two.

I'd tip for full service, but it's pretty much non-existent anymore. And it's not needed if you take care of your car yourself.

So no, you don't tip.

So is it actually illegal to pump your own gas?...Assuming that somehow you were able to pump the gas without anyone stopping you.

Yes, its illegal. the law was passed in 1951. You can open your own gas tank, unscrew the lid yourself, but you have to wait to for the dude (or gal) to physically pick up/pump/return the nozzle. its up to a $500 fine.

ORS 480.315-320 is the law

ORS 480.385 imposes civil penalties (the fine)

This is why I am glad I can use my company's gas card to fill up my tank at Pacific Pride stations. I can fill my own tank and usually be out of there in half the time. God, gas attendants can be so painfully slow. I get that they have to take care of other cars too, but half the time they just seem to be moving like sloths on purpose.

I tipped a guy when he pumped my gas, washed all my windows, & showed me where my coolant goes in my new POS car. He was a godsend that day. Other then that don't tip.

I tip if they perform an extra service, like cleaning the windshield or putting oil in, but it's usually the really old-school grizzled gas attendants that do that, not the young kids they've all got these days.

So, generally no.

I'd be curious if it's actually against the Law for them to accept tips, or simply against most gas stations' policies. I have worked at places where it was against policy to accept tips, but I've never heard of it being actually illegal.

I used to be in gas station management, and while it is not illegal for gas attendants to recieve tips, it is generally understood that you don't tip them unless they do more then just pump your gas. I had some really good gas attendants that got tips all the time because they went out of their way to provide superior service, and people usually appreciated that. Except, you know, those snide out of staters that wanted to fight over the gas nozzle. :P

I guess I am the odd one out, but yes I generally throw them a dollar or two.
The whole "I won't tip for something I can do myself" argument is just tight wad talking.
I can get my food from a restaurant, but that is not my job, it is the wait staff's.
It is good form to tip any kind of service person.
