"Underground" social networking site?
Last night on NPR there was a show about social networking sites like Myspace and Facebook and even Craigslist and a caller called in and said she belonged to an underground social networking site and the host asked what the site was and she said she wouldn't say.

Does anyone here know what site she was talking about?

THANKS!

(And yes, I tried Google)

Sounds more like an antisocial networking site.

Probably someone in this community. She was calling from Portland.

Uhmm, a new one pops up every five minutes? All hoping to be the new myspace or facebook.

I'm not sure. I haven't seen anything. They should at least have a Google listing.

Facebook was for people getting in touch after leaving high school and going to college. In the beginning, you could only be a member if you provided a college email address. Now its open to everyone, and there are applications that are popping up about just about everything to add to your profile. So no, now its not much different than Myspace.

The primary differences are the better interface and page design, it runs on PHP, basically it's better built and designed. It's still just a social networking site, so if you're into that kind of thing, then it's great.

I'd assume like one of the more internet techie elite boards, like the SA forums or 4chan or whatever

Probably shit like A Small World or something. They kick people out if you're not rich or vapid enough.

yeah, that is my guess... people like to start shit...then someone makes up some janky website and calls it "the next myspace"

How useful could a social networking site that nobody knows about be, exactly?

I have the exact same feelings about certain bands people laud over.

I'm not sure how useful music is supposed to be, though... :)
I think I know what you mean, though. A band isn't necessarily better because it's obscure, despite the prevailing Portland indie mentality.
That said, it is always a cool feeling to be one of the first to hear real undiscovered talent - just don't get pissy if they end up becoming huge.

well there's ravelry.com, which is still in beta so you have to have an invitation to join, much like livejournal or gmail were in the beginning. The major difference is invitations don't come from other users, they come automagically when you sign up on the website. about 5-8,000 users are invited every week and once the site is out of beta it'll be open enrollment, but I don't know of anyone who's on ravelry and is reluctant to talk about it because we all adore it :D

I'm assuming you've checked, but Wikipedia has a decent listing of the more popular (or, shall we say, what they consider notable) sites out there right now.

The caller was very vague, though, either deliberately (as in they don't want their site to be massively known) or to keep people guessing (as is the case right_now).

I used to have a Deadjournal once upon a time. When I was thirteen and ZOMGsoexcited to have somewhere online to share my deepest, innermost secrets and feelings with the world.

Yeah, that got old pretty damned quick. Especially when my mom found it and grounded me for finding out some of the stuff I'd written on there... like skipping school and telling her I was at school.

Just another example of why children are dumb at that age.
