So according to this site over four hundred people showed for the anti-scientologist rally in Portland today. Did anyone see anything? Actually go? Does anyone care?

edit: Okay, there's no way there was four hundred people there. One fifty is still more then I was expecting to hear though.

It looked more like 12 on KGW's news story about it.

If that's the CW affiliate, the story had a pro-Co$ slant. The Fox affiliate's story was better.

I have to assume if there were 400 (more than anywhere else? Is Portland really that harmed by scientology?) some pictures would surface pretty quick.

I want to stop seeing this shit all over my friends list. Seriously. Yeah, it's a weird religion. But what are you trying to accomplish? It's not like you can relaly destroy the Church of Scientology. The whole thing is just dumb, imho.

If Anon wanted to make impact they should all register to vote. :/

I spent a long time deciding whether I would go to the protest or not. I want to protest Scientology's scare tactics and their approval of violent methods of dealing with their detractors. But I also firmly believe that Scientologists have the right to belief and the practice of that belief. Although I understand that the protest was intended to protest the actions which I find objectionable, my concern over this turning into a "fuck Scientologists" sort of protest led me to ultimately decide not to go.

I'm not sure I see the logic in your suggestion that those who oppose Scientology's methods should become registered voters. I am a registered voter, and I vote...that's not really doing anything to stop Scientology from threatening newscasters who run negative stories on them and using the license plate numbers of protesters to track them down after the fact and make their lives hell.

...I'm just curious about a protest that happened in Portland. I don't really have any particular feelings one way or another. Huzzah if they're demolished, so be it if not.
Really, I'm not the second person in this case.

You know, I find Scientology to be as silly, corrupt, and asinine as the next guy, but is it really right to have a protest specifically against a religion? however elitist and obnoxious that religion is? Imagine the responses we might earn for an ant-Christian rally. Or anti-Muslim. Or anti-Jewish. (Now, if we were protesting against some specific policy or initiative on the part of the religious authorities, that'd be different.)

well, there's a lot of debate as to whether scientology is, in fact, a religion, as opposed to a business (or some would say a cult).

Now, if we were protesting against some specific policy or initiative on the part of the religious authorities, that'd be different.

Which is what many of them were. Of course there was a fair share of off-topic /b/tards there with "lol xenu eats babies" or whatever, a lot of people were there to protest the fact that the Church of Scientology does a lot of disagreeable if not potentially illegal things, which there is plenty of info about on the Internet so I'm not going to go deep into details here.

Church of Scientology operates more like a multinational corporate entity rather than a religious organization, which is why other countries like Britain and Germany have been so suspect of it over the years. Comparing it to Christianity or Judaism or Islam is hard once you get past the base fact of it being a group of people with the same religious belief. There is no singular Church of Christianity(tm) copyrighting the Bible and only allowing their materials to be distributed through authorized licensees, or sending people to training compounds to learn the path of salvation, or charging them money for going to church. None of the major religions run the whole lot from a centralized source. I mean, the Vatican is the only thing that comes anywhere close, and even that is different enough that this still comes off seeming terribly weird if not outright worrisome.

it's no news, really. i mean we are in the middle of a "religious protest" right now = the war...

as much as i don't agree with any of it, it is freedom of speech.

i'll use myself as an example. i'm a woman, jewish by birth and queer.
there are many people out there who are sexist, racist and homophobic. they have protests and rallies. do i think it's cool? no. do i agree with their views? no. but they =unfortunately= have as much right as i do to protest for women's or queer rights or whatever...

for the record, i think the whole scientology thing is weird...but to each his own, right?

While I'm pretty apathetic toward this whole debauchle, I want to point out that in Germany Scientology is outlawed as a cult, not a religion. It has certain aspects of religion (I mean, really, that's quite a fine line there between cult and religion) but, due to its money-grubbing it's been labeled as cultish.

The numbers I've seen consistently quoted are between 150-200. There are a few places that have photos up, such as here and here, and there are some forums posting a few shots at a time. I think it's pretty great.

I just wish people would actually do some research on what Scientology is, what it does, and the dangers it poses to public interest/good before declaring, "To each their own".

If you want to express an opinion, fine. Make it an informed opinion, though, please. Don't just hand-wave those who disagree with what the Co$ does and stands for and declare us "intolerant of other religions".

Yes, this country was founded on the principles that everyone has a right to religion without persecution. This country, however, was not founded on principles that say that sudo religions have the right to manipulate laws and destroying foundations of public interest and good just so the top layers can make more money while they destroy the very people they steal from.

Just, please do your homework before chastising people for disagreeing with something that's "weird". (Not to the OP, but to other rather ignorant commentors.)

I think most people who know much about Scientology are aware that it's bad. Therefore I can't help feeling that someone who protests something that's so easy to protest is just trying to make him/herself look good.

Religious persecution of a dangerous cult is still religious persecution.
