Gateway treasure hunt!
Here it is... your Geographic Question of the Day!

We're moving to the Gateway area, not so far from the Gateway Frederick Meyer, and are wondering if there are any little hidden treasures there. I noticed to my delight that there was a funky little Asian market within walking distance of our new house. It led me to wonder where there was anything else cool that's tucked away in those little strip malls and commercial areas, let's say between 102nd - 122nd and from Burnside to Halsey.

Bonus points if you can find me some good pho, a place to get beers, or somewhere to eat breakfast.

Recommendations based upon personal experience get the double bonus and advance to the finals.

That's so cool you're moving over there -- in my old neck of the woods!

My FAVORITE place to get breakfast over there is the Gateway Breakfast House (I think is the name). It's on Halsey going "up" from 102nd on the left, and is this cool little hole in the wall joint, with uber cheap prices, snarky staff, and greasy spoon food.

Honestly, I can't remember finding any other super fabulous places during my two year stint there - but the perks are that it's not too awfully far from IKEA, 39th Ave to pop over to Belmont/Hawthorne, or the most awesomest Target at Mall 205.

OOOH speaking of Mall 205 - in the strip mall next to it, there is a pizza place...Wall Street? and they BAKE GARLIC into their crusts -- and have yummy salads and lasagna and great prices for delivery. Check them out man.

Ooh, thanks, R. I saw the Gateway Breakfast House and wondered about it.

I'll be driving through my old neighborhood every day to take the kids to school, so I still have Beaumont/Irvington cred. :)

That's what I love about restaurant reviews... you generally have to go check 'em out for yourself. People have told me that Pho Oregon is great, but the two times I've been there I was so overwhelmed with grease and Anise that I haven't been back.

I will let you know how it goes! :)

You could always join a Loyalist Portland Militia, and make periodic incursions into the City of Maywood Park!

If I told you, we wouldn't have much of a cliff hanger for the second season, would we?

JJ North's buffet is actually really good home-cookin/comfort food if you go at a time that is not too busy. If you are not grossed out by buffets. (It seems pretty clean to me.) I would avoid Sundays between 11-2 because that is the huge after-church rush.

That Asian Market is really awesome.
If you're a fan of mexican food, check out El King Taco. It's next to the Subway on about 103rd and Halsey. Cheap eats that are so yummy. Whenever I'm in the neighbourhood I always make sure to stop by.
