It is supposed to be possible...
But has anyone ever really seen Mt. Rainier from Portland?
I don't know if I ever have, and I've lived here for a while.

I have when crossing the 405 freeway in my car. On a clear day I saw Hood, St. Helen's and Rainier at the same time.

Was breathtaking.

It's my goal on sunny clear days, and so far I haven't failed. I see those three mountains all together about four times a year, just gotta get up there!

You can see it and several others on a good day up on Council Crest.

I have seen it from Council Crest and also from Powell Butte. You need a clear day when the air quality is good, like a day or two after it has rained.

Yeah, from Council Crest but it's really tiny.

Like others have said, when it's very clear you can see it. I work at the Pittock Mansion, and you can see St. Helen's, Rainier, Hood, Adams and Jefferson on a good day.

I've seen it from Council Crest, but it looks like a wart on St. Helens from there.

I've seen Mt. Rainier from Larch Mountain, but not from Portland. I imagine it might be possible on a clear day from the West Hills or Fremont Hill. Of course, this is Portland, so there are no clear days.

No, that's actually Mt. Rainier in the picture. I don't think Council Crest has snow on it, normally.

Rocky Butte is another good spot. On the icy-cold days you can often see multiple Cascades from up there, tho you get a better view of Ranier behind MSH when you go further east. From the peak of NE 122nd, for instance.
