	Sadly, as fun as it is to guess, my bet for the real answer is "they wanted more sympathy in order to up the odds of getting the dog back so reached for a reason to call her a therapy dog instead of just an overpriced but adorable purebred pet." (Reply to this)(Parent)

	grin Well I know that dogs can be trained to sniff out cancers or detect chemical changes in a person right before they have a seizure, so it's at least somewhat of a logical conclusion to draw. But still.. eiww.. (I wouldn't want to pet their dog) (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

	Well sure, but pugs are like $600 (not including...specialized training) and a basal body thermometer is like $15 and much much less of a weird idea. But, it probably would work. I've known dogs who were obsessed with sniffing people's crotches when they were on their period, maybe there was untapped money-making potential there! (Reply to this)(Parent)

	Pearl is a black pug.[snip]Pear is a fertility therapy dog. In all seriousness, I'm guessing they're calling it a "therapy dog" because dogs often help reduce stress levels. In some women who are having fertility issues, women for whom there are no indicators that there's anything physically wrong, stress is a major contributor to infertility. (Reply to this)

I'd better not start seeing laminated "lost Pearl" fliers all over the place now.

Seriously, I'm not saying this story's fake...but the desperation of TV news sources to appear relevant does sometimes lead them to jump on a story without fact-checking, like for example the "jenkem" scare that turned out to be fake.

So we should ALL deluge local news outlets with disturbing lost dog stories, and see how many of them get picked up and reported as news.
