Another lame what-to-do recommendation request.
Has anybody been to the Dr. Sketchy night down at Dante's? I didn't even realize we had it here in Portland, and I'm pretty sure I'm going next Wednesday, but I wondered if anybody had been and had a definitive opinion on the experience.

http://www.drsketchy.com/

I'm pretty excited about it, but can't find much information or input from their LJ or myspace for Portland's events. Does it get packed? Should I get there early? I've never been to Dante's, but someone once told me it was sort of scuzzy- if so, is it regular bar-scuzzy, or should I bring Purell? Thank you in advance for any answers to any of these questions or for any other opinion not specifically solicited above but still useful to me :)

I just went for the first time last Wednesday with another damnportlander :) We had a great time.

Not packed at all, there's about a dozen tables, they weren't even full, enough room for 2-3 people per table. No need to get there super early, right on time should do you fine.

Models were fun, some interesting poses. Was nice to have a beer while sketching. DJ was spinning tunes. People were friendly.

It's regular bar scuzzy, but that's part of its charm.

That sounds awesome :) I'm down with regular bar scuzzy, but then there's that line into just plain gross.

However, my roommate and I are pretty excited, so unless you'd said we'd walk out of there with scabies and mysteriously pregnant, I'd probably go anyway :)

I wonder if it got any of its original inspiration from Richard Feynman....

LOL

Sadly, I could find no such reference on the Dr. Sketchy website, and it took me long enough to scroll through my Dr. Feynman memory to catch the reference. Which reminded me I lost my copy of 'Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!' and should get a new one because there's nothing I like more than odd, cheeky scientists.

Odd cheeky scientists FTW!

You might like this book as well and there are normally highly interesting things near it in the library: http://www.amazon.com/Strange-Brains-Genius-Eccentric-Scientists/dp/0688168949/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1202025879&sr=1-15

RAD.

Tesla's actually one of my all-time favorites, so when I clicked the link and his name popped up, I automatically bought it. Which is frightening, as I'm rather tipsy and didn't know I was capable of "one click shopping" on Amazon, but hopefully that's the only purchase I'll make before falling asleep. I'm pretty excited about this :) Thank you for the recommendation!!

Hehe I hope you like it then, otherwise I shall feel terribly guilty :-P

I did think it was a pretty awesome read though, went into some folks that I didn't realize were so nutters!

I'm sure I'll love it, plus I'm rather used to doing not-very-well-thought-out things while drunk, so now I just sort of chuckle at myself, hope it didn't cost too much in either pride or cash, and move on. It shipped today, and I'm looking forward to it a lot :)

Actually, my roommate had heard rumors about a burlesque drawing night, and I'd randomly been LJ stalking (for lack of a better word) a comix artist in New York who always went to THEIR Dr. Sketchy's, so I was familiar with the concept and filled in the blanks :) I had to go through a couple websites, but if you go to Dante's website (I think just www.dantes.com? perhaps Dante's Live as a keyword search? It's late, and I'M DRUNK, so that's the best you'll get from me at this point) the info is on there. The Dr. Sketchy's sites I've found have been, as I said, sadly lacking in info.

Man. This was the HARDEST (hopefully typo free) thing I've tried in awhile. And, yeah, super exciting :) I'm going to be there on Wednesday trying to act all cool and sophisticated, but inwardly squeeing.

hahaha, you did a great job on giving me some details, even while drunk! my drunken postings are all unintelligible and with a gross overuse of exclamation marks. :) i found the myspace and the LJ and you're right, it's not a lot of info, but i am definitely going to go! i'm actually not moving to portland until the end of february, but hopefully it will still be going on then.

i am sure i will be inwardly squeeing as well, also while trying to seem very very cool. :)

thanks for the info!
