Nothin on the news yet...
A MAX hit a bus tonight on yamhill and 3rd. I was gettin on the red line up by PGE park and the conductor announced that everyone needed to get off the max because all the max lines were shut down because of a bad accident downtown that caused one to be derailed. As far as I can tell from what the people were saying down there and from the way the scene looked, the bus seemed to have run a red light, right in front of the max. Here's a couple pics of it. Crazy! Makes me kinda wonder about taking public transportation. :-P

Yeah, I keep waiting for something to get posted on KATU or something, but nothing yet. They were just setting up the cameras when I was wandering through. Very scary to think that bus/MAX drivers can make mistakes that result in this.

On a side note, if any DP'rs were there, and know more, please post, or comment or whatever! :-P

It's not much, but this brief says that (thankfully) only one person was injured, and that those injuries were minor:

Yeah, that's the up side of buses being huge, for sure. If that had been a car there'd probably be someone in critical condition.

I'm surprised that there aren't more bus accidents; they run red lights too often.

And if it's the Max operator's fault, he or she gets off scot-free.

Holy crap! I just read that article, and that is completely stupid! So if you're a MAX operator, you could like, in theory, run over a bunch of pedestrians or bikes or pull out in front of traffic and kill people and not get in trouble. Something is seriously wrong here. And really needs to be reevaluated.

With a quickness.

Uh, no?

"By Oregon law MAX trains are exempt from the vehicle code, which means there will be no traffic citation issued to the MAX train operator." - not receiving a vehicle traffic citation is hardly the same thing as getting off scot-free.

There probably was, but that story is 3 years old so I imagine it'd be in archives.

All that story that you linked to says that there were no criminal charges and MAX isn't treated as a vehicle. Which is reasonable, as there aren't any cars that are as big or heavy as a train and nothing else runs on fixed rails, so they shouldn't be classified under the vehicle code. I'm not sure why people would jump to the conclusion that this means MAX drivers can plow people down with no repercussions.

I worked for TriMet this past summer, I saw that particular train in question (still being refurbished) - I hadn't heard of the incident before then, but I do know that I'm right about that outcome :)

I was shopping in the Nordstrom Rack at 3rd and Yamhill when it happened. I came out of the store and lights flashing everywhere! I had my camera on me. Here's some more pictures:

Photobucket

Down-for-the-count MAX with its doors all wide open.

Photobucket

This one's blurry, but you can see parts of the MAX dangling onto the ground, and to the right you can see the tracks it's jumped.

Photobucket

Smashed bus.

Yikes! The scary thing about MAX being derailed like that is that it's electric, and if the commutator thingy were still touching the wires but the wheels weren't grounded to the tracks... I'm sure that's one of the reasons they don't let people off right away when MAX has a problem.

Part of the herd.

Ah, so that is what happened. I wondered when. I was one of a heard of folks shuttles bussed from the blue line from 82nd ave to rose garden, the bussed around 3rd and yamhill until we got to PGE park.

Still to run a red when you know max tracks are right ahead, that does bother me a bit. hmmm...well trimet seems to running "on schedule" today thus far.
