Makin' keys
How does one go about getting duplicates of a key with "Do Not Duplicate" on it? Is this something you can even have done?

I've done it several times. Need a UCLA Law School library key?

At MSU the "Do Not Duplicate" keys were on proprietary blanks, so you couldn't get copies without calling Best.

Neat. I shall head over to a key-making place.

If you want to get fancy, have someone on standby that you can have the key maker call and give verbal permission.

Put something over that, like one of those key covers, or tape is what my Husband has always done.

First, you have to join this secret Guild, participate in certain initiation rites...

Actually, no one ever questions it in my experience.

The keysmiths at Frederick Meyer's, without fail, have never questioned my duplication of "Do Not Duplicate" keys. They're not paid enough to question.

I second The Frederick Meyer for keys - no one there seems to care and they're usually nice and you can get cute keys :-)

if all else fails, bribery. I'd also suggest boobs, but that doesn't work in all cases and is really a form of bribery anyway.

I always thought it was some sort of trick. Those keys with "do not duplicate" are hanging on the locksmith's hook, by the zillions as templates (which means someone duplicated a bunch of them to be made into keys! Ack!) and then some keymaker turns it into an actual tool. It was "do not duplicate" before it was born. I'm forgetting the term that makes an actual difference, where a locksmith or responsible key maker will stop and say "Ho, ho HO, Trickster! I can't duplicate these by law or good ethics without a note from the actual owner of the key, or your mommy!" and refuse you to save themselves. Otherwise, anyone will dupe a 'do not duplicate' key, and if they don't, proudly call them a "dry old douchebag" and march out to the next place with your head held high.

Or something.

IMO they'll just make a copy on another DO NOT DUPLICATE.

It's true. Otherwise, it wouldn't be a copy, would it?

Go to a locksmith or a hardware store with an engraver and get 'er done.
